What does a carpenter do?

Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home, or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring a carpenter can help you with many different tasks. Carpenters take on a wide range of work, such as fixing areas of houses and building furniture from scratch.

Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles, or plasterwork. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking, and window frames all fall into this second category.

Decking

Don't know what to do with all that space in your backyard? Hire a carpenter who specialises in building decks. A decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.

Cabinet making

Cabinetmakers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focused on fine details. Cabinetmakers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.

Refinishing carpentry

While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at the small end. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing, or a similar aspect of your home.

Custom made furniture

A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom-made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables, or a shoe rack, there’s someone nearby who can help.

Joinery

Joinery services encompass the craftsmanship of creating and joining wood in workshops, distinct from on-site carpentry. These services range from bespoke projects to crafting timber buildings, emphasizing precision and passion. Joiners play a crucial role in interior woodwork, window and door production, and specialized construction, offering tailored and quality timber solutions.

Help build shelves

£50

Brockwell Park, Greater London

28th Jun 2025

I tried to hang/build these shelves myself but didn’t work very well. I have the wood and the brackets. Just would like somebody to fix the one I built, and put up two more. By “fix” the one I built, I mean fill the wholes that were now empty and make sure that the shelf is sturdy. Really appreciate it thank you! Ps. I am aware that the shelves are not fitted entirely correct to size in the wardrobe but I’m fine with that. Just need them level and secure.

Refinishing my wooden desk

£150

Notting Hill, Greater London, W11

24th Jun 2025

I’m looking for someone to sand down and refinish a desk that was just delivered to my home in Notting Hill. Demolish wooden shed, put up new resin one

£200

Summerstown, Greater London

24th Jun 2025

Demolish and completely remove from the property a wooden shed. I can then help clean the concrete base and surrounding area before you construct my new shed. It’s a Keter Darwin resin 6x4 tongue and groove easy fast assembly shed with a floor panel. H:205 x W:119 x D:184.5. Combined weight of the panels = 61 kg. I’d also like some old items from the shed taken away such as a couple of hoses, a large garden parasol, etc. Those are the big items, the others don’t weigh much.

Valentin is fantastic. He communicated really well with me before the task, making sure he had all the details he needed to do the job properly. He was on time (despite Friday London traffic!), made an excellent job of demolishing my old shed and putting up a new one. He left everything neat, tidy and clean. He is a friendly and polite professional and I would not hesitate to recommend him. Thanks for your help Valentin

Hi. I would like some cupboard doors made to cover some shelves in a sitting room, similar to the ones shown in the photo. Joiner/carpenter needed to adjust kitchen bench for sink fitting

£150

Upper Holloway, Greater London

22nd Mar 2023

We have a large, heavy ceramic sink that needs fitting into the kitchen bench, where previously there was a lighter, metal sink. As I understand it, the hole is a bit small so needs widening a bit to fit it in, but also because of it's weight, the current structure may not support it so needs adjusting in some way to accommodate it. See attached images. It is just the fitting it in to the space we need, not also plumbing it in, which will be arranged separately. - Due date: Before Sunday, 9 April 2023
