Top Bricklayer related questions

A bricklayer works with building materials, like pavers, blocks, and bricks to create structures and features like garden paths, driveways, retaining walls, and house structures.

Common bricklaying projects include building walls for houses, laying pavers for paths, building retaining walls, creating brick mailboxes, and building fireplaces. Your bricklayer may work on new residential builds, commercial buildings, renovations, and even restoration projects.

Usually, your bricklayer will supply all the tools and equipment needed for the project, but you’ll need to purchase and arrange the bricks (in consultation with your bricklayer to ensure you have the correct amount). It’s best to confirm what’s supplied when you hire your bricklayer and confirm the quote.

Qualified bricklayers have completed a 3-4 year bricklaying apprenticeship, including both onsite hands-on training, and offsite training that includes a Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying Apprenticeship.

It depends on the type of bricklaying job you need done, how much prep work is needed, and how many bricks are involved. On average, a bricklayer can lay 280-500 bricks per day. A small job might be done in a couple of hours, while a larger job (like a house-build with 10,000 bricks) may take several weeks.

The cost of hiring a bricklayer usually sits between £110 - £225 for tasks posted on Airtasker. But your bricklayer may charge more or less, depending on factors like the type of job, number of bricks, and how long it’ll take them to finish.

For certain types of tasks, you may need to enquire as to what bricklaying specialist licenses may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.

What does bricklaying include?

Bricklayers employ a range of skills needed to build and repair brick walls and structures. Here are some of the jobs you can ask your bricklayer to help with and what you can expect from each:

Brick walls for homes

One of the most common jobs your bricklayer can help with is building or repairing the brick walls inside and outside of your home. They’ll help you select the right brick to match your home, before laying each brick individually using a guide to ensure a strong, attractive finish. Your bricklayer will use a trowel to spread mortar on the bottom and sides of each brick, and will knock on the brick to remove any air bubbles from the mortar. Then they’ll remove the excess mortar with the trowel.

Paving

Paving is a popular option for driveways, patios, and footpaths because pavers are affordable and easy to maintain (if one breaks, you can easily replace it). Your brick paver will start by preparing the surface. They may need to excavate the area slightly and lay down a level base material like crushed rocks, followed by a mixture of sand and cement. Then they’ll lay your pavers down in the pattern you’ve chosen, before sweeping a mixture of sand and cement into the cracks, then setting them with a hose.

Block retaining walls and fences

Your bricklayer can create brick fences, retaining walls, and even garden edgings for raised garden beds. They’ll use a similar process to building standard brick walls, but they’ll need to choose bricks that can stand up to harsher, more exposed conditions. Once they’ve laid bricks to the correct height, your bricklayer may finish off with a different brick or technique to cap the structure and add interest.

Small bricklaying jobs

Your bricklayer can also help with other smaller jobs like building custom mailboxes using bricks that match your home. Your mailbox installation will involve laying the bricks using mortar between each layer. Your bricklayer will incorporate a “box” section to collect mail and add your house number. Other small bricklaying jobs include brick fireplace installations and repairs, and even rendering.

Our backyard has brick paving which id like to tear up. I’d like to keep the bricks afterwards to reuse them in the garden. The bricks seem to be cemented in as shown in photos. Also, under the garden shed (which I will remove prior to work starting on the bricks) there is some concrete which will need to be removed. Around the drains I’d like to keep some bricks. Open to advice though on how best to ensure the drains remain functional.
