What does a carpenter do?

Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring a carpenter can help you with many different tasks.

Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles or plasterwork. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking and window frames all fall into this second category.

Decking

Many Australian homes are blessed with a large backyard and plenty of sunny hours to enjoy that space. A decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.

Cabinet making

Cabinet makers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focussed on fine details. Cabinet makers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.

Refinishing carpentry

While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at the small end. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing or a similar aspect of your home.

Custom made furniture

A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables or a shoe rack, there’s someone nearby who can help.

Replace shelf with sill under sash window

£120

Stoke Newington, Greater London, N16

15th Jun 2020

I have a sash window with a shelf that sits under it. The shelf is about 200mm deep. It sits on brackets and is held in place with sealant. I would like to remove the shelf and replace it with a simple narrow bullnose sill / stool. I would like the sill to be approx. 40-60mm deep, but I can’t find moulding less than 100mm deep online. I would like the sill to be either drilled in or glued / sealed on and to extend approx 60mm beyond the window architrave on the right side. The left side abuts the wall. See the first picture for the look I’m hoping for - the rest are of the existing shelf. I am looking for someone experienced with woodwork and decorating skills to do this task. Ideally, I would like the person who does this job to: 1. remove the existing shelf; 2. provide a length of 40-60mm deep bullnose moulding for the new sill, OR cut down a piece of 100mm deep moulding using their own tools at home; 3. attach the new sill; 4. sand the edge of the sill on the right side to create a more rounded end; 5. patch up the surrounding area with filler as required; 6. paint the new sill and surrounding area (I will provide the same paint as the rest of the window). Alternatively, I can do steps 4-6 myself, but I really need help with steps 1-3. I can also buy materials online if needed. I think this job will require one or two visits plus an initial brief chat by phone. My husband and I have been in isolation and we are very respectful of social distancing. Both the room and entire flat will be well ventilated. I am very flexible on timing, both day and time. Please let me know if you have relevant experience, and any comments on the above plan of action. Thanks!

Very efficient, neat, communicative and did a wonderful job on the window sill.
