What does a carpenter do?

Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home, or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring a carpenter can help you with many different tasks. Carpenters take on a wide range of work, such as fixing areas of houses and building furniture from scratch.

Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles, or plasterwork. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking, and window frames all fall into this second category.

Decking

Don't know what to do with all that space in your backyard? Hire a carpenter who specialises in building decks. A decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.

Cabinet making

Cabinetmakers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focused on fine details. Cabinetmakers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.

Refinishing carpentry

While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at the small end. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing, or a similar aspect of your home.

Custom made furniture

A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom-made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables, or a shoe rack, there’s someone nearby who can help.

Joinery

Joinery services encompass the craftsmanship of creating and joining wood in workshops, distinct from on-site carpentry. These services range from bespoke projects to crafting timber buildings, emphasizing precision and passion. Joiners play a crucial role in interior woodwork, window and door production, and specialized construction, offering tailored and quality timber solutions.

Cut/fix kitchen work surface

£150

South Wimbledon, Greater London

4th Jan 2024

Hello, I have had a wooden work surface fitted in my kitchen that is not up to the standard I would expect. The job has not yet been completed, and I have added photos to see it’s in quite a mess. There are two cuts. I think the longer cut is potentially okay, but the second cut around the sink looks like a total mess, and maybe I would need to purchase a new one unless you know ways it’s can be salvaged. I am happy to do a video call so you can see it more closely should we move to the next step together. Thanks, - Due date: Before Friday, 5 January 2024

You have finally found someone that takes great pride in their work, finds solutions and has a brilliant skillset. A true gem. Neal is an amazing craftsman and lifesaver. A previous worker destroyed my kitchen and Neal came in and turned it around. He saved what he could and replaced the rest. Highly rated and a really nice guy

Flatten ground and move shed

£250

South Wimbledon, Greater London

16th Oct 2023

The shed in the photos needs to be moved into the gap on the left, and rotated 90. The ground in that gap needs to be dug down / built up to level it, and put the current shed foundations into that place. Then the shed needs to be moved into place (it will be empty). It's not massive it looks only screwed together or could be lifted perhaps. - Due date: Flexible

Replace basic staircase

£1,000

South Wimbledon, Greater London

4th Oct 2023

We would like to replace our staircase. It is a single straight run, 13 steps, 80cm wide. Doesn't need a banister (but can add to the quote if you like). We would like to use the most basic flat pack staircase possible for this. The floorboards at the top on a landing 80cm x 70cm also need replacing. The current staircase would need to be broken down and removed, we can dispose of the parts. The exact date isn't set, just any day in the near future. The stairs are about 2.4m from the lip of the landing to the bottom step; there's about 25cm of extra space if we can extend the length and make it less steep that would be good. We would like the bottom to be either open or some basic cupboards. I can't guarantee any of the measurements so the job would need to be visited first if building the staircase offsite. Separately there's a front door needing replacing at some point if that's of interest. - Due date: Flexible

£50

South Wimbledon, Greater London

7th Oct 2020

Assemble a "6' x 2'6 (1.89x0.75m) Shire Wooden Bike Shed & Garden Storage" in the front patio of my terraced home. Time to build is approx. 2 - 3 hours with just a decent electric screwdriver required (we can provide if necessary). Link to shed: https://www.wickes.co.uk/Shire-Shiplap-Timber-Bike-Store-Honey-Brown---6-x-2-ft/p/147522?utm_source=google&scid=scplp147522&sc_intid=147522&gclid=CjwKCAjwzvX7BRAeEiwAsXExo9Kg2fWA4eAQj9tVg_OP2ssDhTWUj7KzU7g_NEWVyNeFDkwJ0p6zjhoC12QQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Top quality work and he worked round challenges presented by the wood being the wrong size. He tidied up afterwards and gave a friendly and polite service. Highly recommend for future jobs.
