Common house window repairs include fixing cracks, chips, holes, and scratches.
If the tenant caused the window to break through malicious activity or negligence, they’ll need to organise window repairs and pay for them. But if damage has happened due to the property ageing or something else out of the tenant’s control, it’s up to the landlord to pay for the repair.
You don’t need to purchase anything for your window repair unless instructed to by your handyman. They may bring their own equipment and supplies, and will advise you during the service if any parts are needed.
This depends on the size and location of the window. For basic window replacements at ground floor level, this could take as little as 1 hour.

What does a window repair service include?
Your window repairer can help with a range of different window types and window repairs services, including glass window repairs, aluminium window frame repairs, and even car window repairs. They’ll advise you on the best solution (whether repair or replacement) and use their tools to get the job done. Here’s what you can expect from some of the most common house window repairs:
Glass window repairs
Your handyman will start by assessing the damage. If the extent of the damage is beyond repair, they’ll recommend a window replacement. But if your window glass only has a small crack, hole, or scratch, they’ll be able to repair it - at least temporarily - to seal your room and prevent the damage from getting worse. They’ll wear heavy-duty gloves before handling any broken glass. Next, they’ll use clear nail polish to patch up any small holes and scratches, building it up in layers, to discretely repair the glass. If there’s a crack but the window still feels sturdy, your repairer may apply a piece of clear tape over the surface to stop the crack from spreading further. For more advanced broken window repairs, you’ll need to hire a glazier or organise a glass replacement.
Window frame repairs
The most common window frame repairs involve repairing rotten wood frames (since aluminium windows are less prone to damage). Your repairer will start by chipping away most of the rotten wood before covering it with a few layers of liquid epoxy to soak in. Once dry, they’ll mix epoxy filler and use this to fill the gap in your wooden window frame, shaping it to blend in with the rest of the frame. Once this filler is dry, they’ll sand the area smooth. At this point, the repairs are ready for priming and painting.
Window replacement
When your glass windows are beyond repair, they’ll need replacing. Your handyman will start by using the broken window pane. They’ll put on heavy-duty gloves and safety glasses before scraping away at the putty or loosening the seal around the broken window pane so they can loosen and remove the old glass (including any shards). They’ll dispose of the old glass and then smooth out the edges of the frame to remove any remaining sealants. Your window replacement technician will measure the window to determine the size of the new glass, leaving a small 3.2mm gap around the edges to allow for expansion. Most of the time, they’ll get the glass cut to size at a local window repair shop or glass company.
Depending on the type of window frame and how the glass is sealed in, your handyman will then apply putty to the edges of the window, rolling it in their hands to make a long rope, and then sticking it onto the frame. They’ll gently push the new glass into the frame, allowing it to stick to the putty. Your window replacement professional will then apply more putty around the edges on both sides of the glass before gently removing any excess putty and smoothing it over.
Car window repairs
If your car window has a minor hole or crack, your window repair person may be able to fix it without needing a total replacement. They’ll clean the area to remove debris and use a glass repair kit to seal the broken area with epoxy. The epoxy is applied using a syringe, which forces resin into any cracks for a stronger seal.

Service 20 UpVC opening windows, 5 needing replacement of shootbolt
£250
Nag's Head, Greater London
23rd Jun 2025
We have just moved into the property. There are 8 Casement uPVC windows which were installed in the mid 90s. On these windows there are 20 opening sashes which I think need a service. Of these 14 are fully functional and probably just need checking. On 5 of the opening sashes the bottom bracket of the shootbolt system has worked itself free with the fixing screws having sheared off, and one further window still has the bottom bracket, but will not lock closed, something appears to be obstructing the bottom bolt.

Measure up & replace 3 x Shed windows with Stronger Glass as 2 cracked
£150
Foxwist Green, Cheshire
22nd Jun 2025
I've a 10x10 Shed, less than a year old. My plan is to turn it into a small Workshop when finances allow me to. I chose to have three opening windows, each glazed with "Horticultural Glass." (Not my choice!) I noticed a couple of days ago that two of the panes had cracks. One pane in the bottom corner. The other quite a long crack heading up in the direction of centre. Two things worry me, water ingress and security. Would you be interested in this kind of job? If so please could you give me a quote for: 1.Visit & measuring all 3 windows. 2. Buying Stronger/Security Glass & Installing. And finally... 3. If there is anything cost effective you can do to improve my Shed's Security, like extra locks (I've got a keyed lock and padlock) at the moment. Although it might not be necessary with Stronger windows?? I'm in no mad rush... Many thanks Bill

Window not closing
£100
Finsbury Park, Greater London, N4
23rd Apr 2025
I'm posting a small job here. One of the windows is not closing properly. I'm fairly sure that a small part of the opening mechanism—possibly a screw—has come loose and fallen off. As a result, the window now hangs slightly downward when opened and cannot be closed properly. I've attached a picture of the opposite window, which is a mirror image of the damaged one. The missing part has come off the upper section of the closing mechanism. It is possible that the upper hinge needs to be replaced.
