Ei141RC Ionisation Mains Smoke Alarm with Backup Battery: take cover off, replace battery, and replace cover. I think you need to wedge a small flathead screwdriver in the side while pulling the cover off, but I have a balance problem and it's too tricky to fiddle with it while using probably a wrong-size screwdriver and standing on a chair.
