Top Soundproofing related questions

The top reasons why people decide to soundproof a space is for privacy and to block unwanted noise travelling inside or outside. This includes areas like bedrooms, music studios, media rooms, and offices.

A professional will help you decide which method is best for your space which means you’re less likely to waste time and money on the wrong stuff. Plus, if your soundproofing involves technical steps like cutting into walls or knowing the right depth and location for installation, your technician will be able to do this confidently.

Soundproofing should significantly decrease the amount of sound that can travel in and out of your space. Although the degree of change will depend on the type of soundproofing done.

Different materials will work better in different spaces. The most common materials used to soundproof a room are soundproofing foam and soundproofing panels (either metal or drywall).

The time it takes to soundproof a room will depend on the size of the space and the method you choose. Normally, this can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days (especially if you need to remove and replace drywall).

What does a soundproofing service include?

Soundproofing services on Airtasker include all the steps involved from testing and recommending a solution through to installing your soundproofing gear. Here are some of the most commonly requested areas for soundproofing:

Wall soundproofing

Soundproofing your walls is one of the most popular ways to soundproof a room. Your technician may advise you to insulate your walls and soundproof them with foam. They’ll cut into your wall to install the foam and repair your plasterboard afterwards. Another option is to apply extra layers of drywall to your current walls, thickening the wall and making it harder for sound to travel through. You could also use vinyl as an extra layer of protection. You may also want to apply several coats of soundproofing paint or temporarily pin soundproofing blankets to your walls to block unwanted sound. Whatever options you go with, your technician will help you set everything up to soundproof your walls.

Window soundproofing

A lot of sound-waves can travel through windows, so window soundproofing services can make a huge difference when minimising noise in your home. Your technician will seal cracks in your windows using a sealant. They may also install soundproof curtains or blinds to help dull or block out further noise.

Floor and ceiling soundproofing

If your neighbours above or below you have a bit of a noise problem, it can be well worth trying a few different ways to block this out. The most common method for soundproofing ceilings and floors is to install a resilient channel, which is a thin metal structure that helps block sound-waves from travelling between sheets of drywall. They’ll remove your wall sheeting to install the resilient channel before replacing it and repairing the joints. Your technician may also recommend adding carpet or rugs to your floor to further absorb sounds.

Car soundproofing

Car soundproofing can help dull the noise of the road or engine in your car - especially in older cars. This usually involves laying sound deadening foam mats under your floor mats. But they may also recommend insulating your car doors and boot for added noise reduction. This will involve unscrewing the inside panels and installing insulation in your car doors before replacing the panels.

Soundproof a living room wall

£250

Littleborough, Greater Manchester

Soundproof living room wall from neighbours. The house is an end terraced so only noise from one side of house. I would start with the living room first and possibly need adding to kitchen and two double bedrooms upstairs in future. Please message me with your method and price. The house was built in around 1890 so I imagine no sound proof installed. Thanks

Sound proofing of two doors to prevent sound leaking

£750

Coulsdon, Greater London

7th Jun 2025

We are experiencing significant noise leakage from our temple, which is causing complaints from neighbours. Noise Levels: - Inside the mandir: 82–110 dB - Outside on the main road: 60–70 dB - Outside the emergency exit: 70–85 dB - In the lobby (just inside the front door): 80–90 dB Problem Areas: - The fire exit at the back left of the building has a double-glazed emergency door, but a lot of sound leaks from the edges. Pressing the door reduces the noise, so the seal may be poor. - The internal double doors between the lobby and the temple are part wood, part glazed. Sound in the lobby is still very high (80–90 dB). What we need: - An expert to assess and recommend solutions to reduce sound leakage, especially from the emergency exit and the internal double doors. - Possible solutions might include upgrading to acoustic double glazing, improving door seals, or replacing doors with better soundproofed options. What to quote for: - Assessing the current doors and seals. - Recommending and potentially installing new acoustic double-glazed doors or adding secondary glazing. - Improving the seal around the emergency exit door to reduce peripheral sound leakage (e.g., using acoustic caulk, weatherstripping, or upgrading the door) Photos are attached for reference.

Install Car Soundproofing (Mercedes A-Class W169 Noisekillers Kit)

£175

New Southgate, Greater London, N11

29th Apr 2025

I have purchased a full Noisekillers soundproofing kit for a 2009 Mercedes A-Class (W169). I am looking for someone experienced in car interior work, car audio fitting, or detailing to install the complete kit professionally. The kit includes 18 pre-cut soundproofing panels and 8 self-adhesive pads. Areas to be soundproofed include the bonnet, interior floor under the carpets, boot area including the spare wheel well and boot sides, wheel arch pads accessed via the driver-side wheel arch flap, and interior door panels which will require the removal and refitting of the door cards. Tasks Involved: Lift sections of the interior carpet and trim carefully. Clean surfaces before applying adhesive pads. Fit under-floor and boot mats as specified. Remove and reinstall front door cards to fit the soundproofing pads inside the doors. Apply all adhesive sheets securely and reinstall trim without damaging clips or fittings. A small roller is recommended to apply even pressure on adhesive parts. Ideal Installer: Experience in car audio fitting, car detailing, or van lining. Must have appropriate tools including trim removal tools, screwdrivers, and ideally a small roller. Ability to work neatly and carefully without damaging vehicle trims. Previous experience with Mercedes interiors preferred but not essential. Photos of the car and soundproofing kit are available if needed.

Soundproofing a ceiling

£1,500

Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire

20th Feb 2025

I'm looking to significantly reduce sound travelling in both directions between the basement and kitchen above it in my property. The main room of the basement studio is about 4m x 5m, with wooden beams in the ceiling. I have used acoustic foam glued to the ceiling but not found it to make a huge difference. The level of noise from either side is not huge/high level, the ceiling is very noise transparent, so just regular level conversation or TV is noticeable between the two areas which I'm trying to make separate rental units. There's is also contact noise from footfall/chairs moving which I'm slightly less concerned by
