General Maintenance
What does general labouring include?
General labourers are skilled in a range of maintenance and labour tasks. Many have a trade background with specific skills in one area, while others are happy to work under your direction and provide a willing hand with whatever you’re doing. Here are some of the most common general labouring tasks and what you can expect:
Cleaning and maintenance
Common labouring jobs involve cleaning, especially cleaning up a worksite after tradespeople have finished. They’ll start by clearing out larger debris using a wheelbarrow and shovel, and loading it into a skip or trailer. Next, they’ll sweep the area to remove small debris, dirt, and dust. Finally, they may mop or pressure wash all suitable surfaces (depending on whether it’s inside or outside), paying special attention to any stains, mortar, or grout that’s been left behind.
Trades assistance
While labourers aren’t necessarily licensed tradespeople, they do often help out tradespeople with plumbing, carpentry, and building tasks. Carpenters or builders may get help with removing old structures, moving wood, steadying framework, and other tasks that need an extra pair of hands. Plumbers may need help with cleaning up, moving pipework, and lifting parts. In any case, the licensed tradesperson will oversee the work and ensure it is carried out safely and to a high standard.
Digging holes and trenches
General labouring often involves digging - especially by hand. Your labourer will bring their own shovel and other required tools, or you may supply the tools at the worksite. They may help dig holes for fences, dig trenches for drainage, remove stumps, or level out soil ready for landscaping.
Moving and loading
Your labourer can help move materials from one part of your site to another or load them onto a truck or trailer. These materials could include soil, gravel, roadbase, timber, bricks, paving, garden waste, corrugated iron, rocks, plants, and even furniture. They’ll use a combination of tools, depending on the job, including shovels, forks, wheelbarrows, and gloves.

[Gyp]rock with me! 🤘🏻 Two small walls to be tile backed (labour only)
£100
Dalston, Greater London, E8
22nd Sep 2025
Only experienced mudders/tapers please. I have all the materials and knowledge for the job, I just don't have two of the professional tools and the willpower to complete it alone. We will be backing up 2 walls in the world's smallest, 4m² bathroom with plasterboard, and sealing them good and proper. Wall#1 is a non load-bearing concrete internal wall, Wall#2 is the building's external wall, stripped to brickwork - extremely prone to damp and mould. The room is so small, I was struggling taking photos of it fully zoomed out, phone squished to the opposite wall. I'd say maybe a 2hrs tops job? The area is empty and will be prepped. First fix was not done, we'll leave the exposed pipes uncovered (the bath will go in that corner anyway). The fiddly bit is getting the measurements right, some drilling, and to ensure at the end everything is sealed and as damp proof as it possibly can be. £100 for the first 2hrs £40/hr thereafter if we run over *** bonus if you're also versed in tiling - for a later date, when the bath is fitted *** ____ Here's what I've got: ● 4x 12.5mm x 2400mm x 1200mm tile backers (moisture resistant "green" plasterboard) ● 25kg tile adhesive (cement based, rapid set) ● 35mm screws + washers ● 45mm cement screws (just in case) ● BT1 (for the joints) ● 5L SBR ● despair and reno fatigue Here's what to bring: ● paddle mixer, bucket, hawk, trowels... etc ● SDS drill ● skills, hopes and dreams Here are the details: ● Wall#1: - approx 2400mm x 1700mm - can be dot and dabbed ● Wall#2: - a nightmare of 2300mm x 1600mm+ - lots of off-cuts needed to have it ultimately tiled all around, above, and below the window - adhesive to be spread all over to the exposed bricks for extra adhesion and damp proofing (NOT just dot and dabbed) - elbow grease likely needed to drill/screw the gyproc into the bricks Prepping will be done before (towel rack + remaining plaster off Wall#1, concrete + cement patch work on deeper holes, trunking, Sika Proofing)
