If you notice that your sliding door is becoming difficult to slide open, it’s probably time to call a professional for sliding door repairs. If the door rollers are damaged, you may need a roller replacement.

With regular maintenance, you shouldn’t experience too many problems with your sliding doors and they should last decades. Generally, glass sliding doors can be expected to last about 30 years.

To prepare for sliding door repair services, move away any objects around the door that may get in the way of the repair service. You may also need to tie up any pets in the area. Be sure to consult your local handyman to know what you need in case you're getting sliding door repair in your area.

Depending on what type of repair is being done, your handyman will bring a drill, screwdriver, pliers, pry bar, tape measure, level, screws, rubber mallet, and safety goggles. They may also bring replacement parts, like door rollers.

The most common problems with sliding doors are dirty tracks and worn rollers. Broken locks are also common, which will require you to get locksmith services.

General Maintenance

What does a sliding door repair service include?

Sliding door repair specialists can help you repair your door whether you need a simple replacement part, or you need to replace the door entirely. Whether your sliding patio door needs servicing or the glass panels of your balcony doors have cracks, you can book a handyman offering sliding door repair in your area. Though the method of repair may vary between handymen, here’s what you can expect from a standard service:

Cleaning out the tracks

The most common cause of a difficult-to-open sliding door is debris in the lower track - this mostly happens to patio doors that are exposed to outdoor dirt and debris. The channel can easily become clogged with dirt and disrupt the rollers on the door. The first step of your sliding door track repair service is to clean it out. The repairer can clean out the lower and upper tracks using a stiff brush, toothbrush, and a hand vacuum. After the tracks are thoroughly cleaned, they’ll apply an aerosol lubricant to both the upper and lower tracks.

Roller repair

Need sliding door roller repair? If the door is still difficult to open after the track is clean, your repairer will adjust the rollers at the bottom of the door. Rollers can wear down with time and lower the bottom of the door, causing the door to rub against the track. Most sliding doors have an adjusting screw located at the bottom of the door ends that raises and lowers the roller. The handyman will adjust this screw until the door stops rubbing on the bottom track and it becomes easier to slide open and close.

Roller replacement

If the roller on the sliding door is damaged beyond repair, the handyman may decide the best remedy is to replace it entirely. The stiles of the moving panel are first unscrewed and removed to detach the door. One handyman will lift the door so that the other handyman can slide the bottom rail over. The roller can be unscrewed, removed, and replaced. The door is put back into place, and the rollers are adjusted so the door sits squarely in the frame.

Door replacement

If your whole sliding door needs to be replaced, your handyman will take the same steps to remove the door, as they would if they were replacing the roller. However, instead of replacing the roller, they’ll remove the door entirely, and replace it with a new one. They’ll clean the tracks and adjust the rollers so your new door can operate smoothly. You can also ask them about door parts that need replacing.

I need someone to fit 2 x aluminium door bolts to a balcony door in a flat. One at the top and one at the bottom of the door ideally, so there is a form of lock mechanism on the door. The current tilt and turn mechanism has failed and the door does not lock and is therefore a health and safety hazard. I have had quotes and already enquired to have the mechanism/ door replaced and it is too expensive or I have been told that it is not possible to provide a like for like, or contractors have not been willing to take the work on. I have attached some pictures of the door and example of the bolt that I am referring to. Open to listening to any alternative suggestions. Thank you
