Top Electricians related questions

It depends on the regulations set by your local government. For some electrical tasks, you may need to follow safety regulations and hire a qualified electrician who completed a relevant college course, especially if it involves intricate equipment or high-voltage systems. It intends to ensure optimum safety and avoid any injuries or accidents. In case you do need a registered electrician, make sure to confirm the relevant license (or white card) and certificate with your electrician.

It depends on the scope and inclusions of the service you need. Typically, electric installation or repairs in a residential area take several hours, but still completed within the day. Industrial or commercial electrical works, on the other hand, may take a little longer since they require a wider variety of services and follow stringent safety regulations. In case your sparky needs to revisit your property the next day, they can coordinate the details with your right away.

Experts recommend having your electric wires, cables, and boxes inspected at least every three to five years. For landlords, you can also have your property checked after a tenancy contract. A more frequent inspection is encouraged for commercial and industrial premises. Since they have higher energy consumption, they are more susceptible to early degradations and failures. For optimal safety, you can also book for at least an annual inspection.

An electrical installation condition report (EICR) certifies the safety and competency of your electrical wirings. Most of the time, commercial and industrial businesses are also pushed to get an EICR since they have more people consuming electricity. It is usually issued after a rigorous inspection, and once electricians with a white card confirm electrical safety.

Electricians often provide virtually any electrical repair service. They can tweak power lines, do rewirings, and handle replacements. Some of the most common issues that they can resolve include a sparking fuse, frequent surges, and flickering lights. They also handle repairs for electrical equipment and generators, appliances, and other fixtures.

Definitely! Taskers' services are not limited to electrical-related problems. If you don't have the time or skills to complete some of your DIY household tasks, we can also connect you with a trustworthy handyman who can help! There's no task that is too big or too small. You can hire them to install carpets, curtains, and fix broken appliances or furniture. You can also commission them for wallpapering, bricklaying, and other building and construction tasks.

The rates of hiring an electrician near you can range from £45 to £60 per hour, depending on their skill level, specialty, urgency, and your location.

The type of electrical work can also influence costs. Standard electrical work, like installations and wiring repairs, falls within the average range. For example, rates for downlight installation can range from £60 to £350. Specialised services can cost more; for instance, solar panel installation can cost £1,500 to £9,000.

You should also consider call-out fees, as many local electricians charge a call-out fee to cover travel costs.

It's always best to call licensed electricians when you notice any of the signs below:

  • Unusual burning smells or smoke from outlets, appliances, or electrical panles
  • Sparks or electrical arcing from outlets, switches, and appliances
  • Downed power lines
  • Electrical shocks from appliances, switches, and outlets
  • Frequent tripping of circuit breakers or blown fuses
  • Persistent flickering lights
  • Buzzing sounds from outlets or switches

Hiring a good electrician near you is not only for electrical fixes; you can also get their services for installations and upgrades, such as:

  • Switchboard upgrades
  • High-power appliance installations
  • Light installations
  • Wiring for home automation or security systems

It is strongly advised against doing electrical work on your own unless you have the right qualifications for the job, as there are significant safety and legal implications involved in doing electrical work.

If you don't have the right certifications or licence, there are only a few tasks that you can do safely, such as changing light bulbs or resetting a tripped circuit breaker. Any work beyond these basic tasks should be left to licensed electricians.

What do electrician services include?

Local electrical contractors can handle all electrical projects, whether for residential, commercial, or industrial properties. If you are building from scratch, they can help construct an efficient electrical framework for you. They can also establish new electrical wiring and control panels, and test the electrical flow for your safety.

As for existing properties, electricians can routinely maintain, repair, and upgrade your power systems whenever needed. They can also handle electrical equipment and machinery for factories and manufacturing plants. Here is a better overview of electrical services you can book:

Domestic electrician near me

Electrical safety is paramount when it comes to your home, and that's when residential electricians play a vital role. They follow safety regulations and make sure that all electrical components and control panels, including electrical wiring and cables, are in good condition to avoid any incidents that could put you and your family at risk.

Domestic electricians can establish power points and switches to support your household appliances. They can also assist with installing various electrical appliances such as electric heaters and showers, in case you're looking to upgrade or planning a renovation. All while ensuring they follow all building regulations.

Commercial electrician near me

Not to be confused with domestic electricians, commercial electricians are mostly involved in large-scale projects for buildings and various businesses like restaurants, hotels, and corporate offices. Depending on your establishment's requirements, they can fix lighting, heating, and cooling systems or install fire alarms and other security equipment if needed.

Industrial electrician near me

For engineering projects or tasks that involve higher voltage systems and more complex machinery, it's better to connect with a licensed industrial electrician. Their services include electrical construction and maintenance for industries like factories and plants. They don't just install lights and electrical heaters. Most of the time, they also deal with different types of manufacturing equipment, including hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Industrial electricians can also troubleshoot problems and repair them as they see fit. They can even create tailored maintenance programs for your electrical motors and generators.

Emergency electrician

The moment you sense something odd with your control panels, sockets, and switches, or notice a burning smell, spark, or flickering of lights, get in touch with a local electrician immediately. With Airtasker, finding available emergency electricians in your area is fast and easy! You won't even have to worry about not having any tools on hand–most electricians are already equipped with their own professional tool kits, which they can bring with them for any service that you may need.

Electrician to install a light and fix a fuse on an oven

£120

Battersea, Greater London, SW11

26th Mar 2025

The oven tripped the fusebox and then wouldn’t come back on. It was recently installed (hard wired) so we need to fix that. Presumably the fuse on the oven itself has blown. Would need to take the oven out of its slot. The other job is to replace a light fitting as the bulb and the thing that houses the bulb has come off so there are two wires only. Need to replace with a standard light fitting.

Worth getting a qualified electrician to do your electrical work vs a general handyman. Great experience, very nice guy who clearly knows his stuff.

2x Electric Radiator w/sockets and 1x doorbell repositioning

£200

Temple Mills, Greater London

5th Mar 2025

3 tasks in a Newbuild flat with plasterboard balls and electrical radiators and doorbell all linked to the main electrics: I have two small Applimo electric radiators attached to the wall in two rooms that I want removed and repositioned further along the same wall. Both radiator AND the socket boxes next to them need to be moved and the gaps left behind in the plasterboard walls filled and made good (for wall painting by me at a later date). There is also a doorbell behind the entrance door to the flat which needs to be repositioned half a metre to the right of where it currently is. The repositioning of all three items is so as to make way for other wall installations to be hung i.e. mirrors, shelves etc and the current positions of these items are 'in the way!' No painting is required but holes/gaps in the walls where items are removed need to be 'made good' ready for painting at a later stage. The specific tasks are: 1. Room A - removal and repositioning of electric radiator and socket boxes further along plasterboard wall, at the same height as it is currently is and holes made good. 2. Room B - removal and repositioning of electric radiator and socket boxes further along plasterboard wall, at the same height as it is currently is and holes made good. 3. Entrance hallway - removal and repositioning of small doorbell unit further along plasterboard wall, at the same height as it is currently is and holes made good. All three items are linked to/plugged into/attached to the mains power supply and circuit switch board in store room and need to be carefully removed and repositioned. Please study pictures. Key criteria are a good smooth finish when 'making good' gaps/holes in walls and excellent electrical skills! :-)

I am as discerning as they come and so really happy to report how pleased I am with this chap. Friendly, efficient and with a can-do attitude, I am very inpressed with the work he undertook in my flat. Very pleased indeed and look forward to booking him for the next job!
