Top Tradesman related questions

The average cost of hiring a tradesman ranges from $40 to $70 per hour, depending on your location and the type of tradesman you'll be hiring. Other factors that affect the cost of getting a tradesman include the size of the task, whether you are supplying materials, and the complexity of the job. But in general, most of the work from tradespeople costs between $115 to $400 when hired for a task through Airtasker.

When you post a task on Airtasker, you’ll usually get a fixed price quote. Sometimes, after inspecting the problem, your tradesman may recommend additional work and suggest an hourly rate on top of the original quote.

The most common trades in Australia are plumbing, electrical, and carpentry. These trades are in high demand for their specialist skills and ability to help out with everyday, but high-risk tasks around the home. Specialised tradesmen can also work as a craftsman or an artisan to help with different DIY projects.

Most trades require licences, registrations, and insurance to operate. Each state has its specific licensing requirements for specific skilled workers. This ensures the tradesman has the right skills and knowledge to work safely and to ensure the quality of their work.

The best way to find and confidently hire the right tradesmen in your area is on Airtasker. Provide an accurate description of the task, review your offers, and check the ratings and reviews so you know your tradesman is experienced and will do a great job for your projects.

Hiring a tradesman directly gives you more control over the task, who does it, and how it’s completed. Plus, hiring an independent tradie can often be more affordable because they have fewer overheads - they can give you a more competitive quote.

You can find a local tradesman by using trusted platforms like Airtasker, checking online tradies' reviews, and asking for recommendations from friends or neighbours. Always look for licensed professionals with verified reviews, a clear quote, and experience relevant to the job you need done.

A handyman typically handles general maintenance and small repairs, such as hanging shelves or fixing taps, while a tradesman (or tradie) is a licensed professional with specific training in a trade like plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or tiling. Tradesmen are required for specialised or regulated work.

Yes, most tradespeople bring their own tools and standard materials needed for the job. However, for larger projects or custom work, they may need to source specific parts or request you to supply materials. It’s best to confirm what’s included when you book.

Absolutely. Many tradies are happy to take on small tasks or one-off jobs, such as patching drywall, fixing a leaking tap, or repairing decking. Platforms like Airtasker are ideal for posting these types of jobs and finding a local tradie quickly.

What does a local tradesman do?

Tradesmen (and tradeswomen!) can help you tackle the tasks that need the expertise, tools, and knowledge that only a qualified local tradie can give. Whether you need a trade to help with home repairs or construction, you can find local tradesmen to help with tasks like:

Electrical & plumbing tradies

When you hire a tradie to work with electricity, gas, or water, they’ll need special qualifications, training, and equipment to keep you and your house safe from fires, flooding, and property damage. You’d need to hire an electrician to install your new light fittings or electrical equipment, like ovens. And you’d need a plumbing tradie to help with plumbing tasks, like fitting new taps and pipes, or gas plumbing tasks like installing or repairing heaters and stoves. Your tradie will start by asking questions about the issues you’re having, then they’ll do a physical inspection of the area to assess the work needed. They’ll use their specialist tools and equipment to repair, install, or replace parts to get everything working properly.

Carpentry & cabinet making tradies

Tradesmen are usually qualified professionals, so they’re ideally suited to tasks that need a higher skill level than a handyman. Carpenters and cabinet makers are in high demand for installing new cabinets, custom-making furniture and installing built-in robes and cupboards. They’ll measure your space to ensure the furniture and built-ins fit perfectly and match your existing decor. Then they’ll work with a range of equipment and tools (onsite or offsite) to cut and shape the wood, then assemble any parts to create your finished product.

Home exterior work tradies

Tradesmen can help provide a professional finish to your exterior building tasks. For example, installing or repairing balustrades. Your professional tradesmen will measure, fit and install glass, metal, or wood balustrades to make your balcony area or stairs safe while matching the design of your home. Once they’ve established a safe work zone, they’ll remove the old balustrades before installing the new parts. Another popular exterior task is installing or upgrading awnings. Your tradie can pull down old, broken, or faded awnings and help you choose a new awning to match your house and surroundings. Then they’ll carefully install the new awning so that it is safe and secure.

Concrete repairs & resurfacing tradies

When concrete is damaged, it can create trip hazards, and let in water, dirt and other pests, which can cause further damage. Concrete resurfacing can help repair damage and give your property an instant update with coloured concrete overlays and/or designs. Your tradie will first assess the damage, then repair or replace any broken areas. Then they may clean the existing area with high-pressure hoses or chemicals. Once the area is clean and prepared, they’ll mix up a thin, concrete-based surface compound that will cover the area.

Drywall repair - reposted ad

$200

Croydon VIC, Australia

19th May 2026

Reposting this ad as there are a few more tasks and details than initially anticipated. Need a handyman for drywall repair in a few places, one of which includes bracket installation and attaching a bookcase to a well. Prefer an all inclusive quote or hourly. First pic - The drywall was damaged due to a baby gate. Need someone to patch up, paint and attach a metal bracket to stop this from happening again. Note that the hole needs to be patched, painted and dried before bracket can be installed. This may require couple of visits between painting and bracket installation.I can supply the paint and metal bracket etc. 2nd pic - fixing a 1-2 inch scratch in the drywall in another room - this probably only needs paint. Again I can supply the paint. 3rd and 4th pics - fixing the drywall in another section of the house which has been drilled by mistake by a trade. Attaching a bookcase to the wall - note that you need to be physically strong as the top half of the bookcase needs to be lifted a couple of feet to place it on the bottom section. Its a 2 person job and I can assist. Let me know if you have any questions

Paul was very punctual and spent a lot of time to make sure the job was done to a very high level and to satisfaction.

Hi, I need a really good gyprock repairer as this whole is in my main light room and the sun light hits it, So I need a really good, experienced person. The whole is around 20cmx20cm. I need it repaired and then I'm happy to do the top coat to get it level and smooth.

Andrew was very very polite, efficient, a perfectionist and clean. I will 100% be hiring him again and I highly recommend his work. The patch work he did exceeded my expectations!

Rendering an existing brick wall

$10

Aberfeldie VIC 3040, Australia

18th May 2026

Just demolished an outhouse and need rendering for a feature wall. The size is 2000mm wide x 3000mm high. The corner on the right will need a deeper fill and will most likely return around 100mm on the right hand side wall. Render just the minimum thickness required and a cement colour finish is adequate. Not too sure of tge cost, hence I've put a minimum of $10.00

Farshad turned up on time and completed the task within 16 hours of posting the add. He did an excellent job so we (my daughter and I) are extremely content with the rendered wall finish. I would not hesitate to use Farshad's services again.

Gyprocker for patching holes (see photos)

$400

Potts Point NSW, Australia

18th May 2026

(1) I have some ceiling holes made by an electrician that need to be patched (I have the pieces of gyprock), and a couple of smaller 10mm drill areas (2 through plaster and 2 through brick) than need to be filled with an appropriate filler. And then painted as below. (2) There are a few small patches around the areas of the holes that have glue on the wall and/or paint ripped off from previous ducting that needs sanding back/off, then painted. (3) I will provide ceiling and wall paints for you to paint the affected areas once patched. See photos. The ceiling at the highest point where most of the holes are is 3.6m. One of the areas is under a stairwell, which might be reached by a stair-compatible ladder or possibly from the stairs at the same level on the other side. See Photo of stairwell. This is a residential property, there are no access issues, it is my home. Parking: There is no dedicated parking, I can provide all-day street parking permits. Usually it does not take long to get a park during a weekday.

Very responsive and quick communication, Ceiling hole patching job job done well, neat an tidy thanks!

Fix plasterboard and curtain rail

$400

East Victoria Park WA, Australia

18th May 2026

I need an experienced, professional plasterer to repair a damaged section of plasterboard and securely remount a curtain rail. As seen in the photo, the curtain rail bracket has pulled out, creating a hole and causing a significant stair-step crack to travel up the wall. This job will require a professional and experienced plasterer to ensure a seamless fix. Because of the extent of the cracking, it may even require a replacement of a larger piece of plasterboard rather than just a simple patch. Scope of Work: Plasterboard Repair: Assess damage, cut out compromised plasterboard if needed, install replacement/patch, tape, flush, and sand to a smooth, paint-ready finish. Reinforcement: Ensure the area where the curtain bracket attaches is properly reinforced (stud-fixed or using heavy-duty toggles) so it can safely handle the weight of the curtains. Curtain Rail Remounting: Re-install the curtain rail bracket securely back into position. Requirements: Must be a qualified or highly experienced plasterer. Please bring all your own tools, plasterboard/materials, compounds, and heavy-duty wall fixings. Clean up and removal of any plaster debris. (Note: Painting the repaired wall is not required, just a perfect, paint-ready finish). Please share your experience with similar repairs when bidding. Looking to get this sorted soon. Thanks!

5/5 Stars Appan did a fantastic job plastering the wall in my bedroom and fitting the curtain rail. He was highly professional, punctual, and polite throughout the entire job. I really love the quality of his work and highly recommend his services!
