What does a local tradesman do?

Tradesmen (and tradeswomen!) can help you tackle the tasks that need the expertise, tools, and knowledge that only a qualified local tradie can give. Whether you need a trade to help with home repairs or construction, you can find local tradesmen to help with tasks like:

Electrical & plumbing tradies

When you hire a tradie to work with electricity, gas, or water, they’ll need special qualifications, training, and equipment to keep you and your house safe from fires, flooding, and property damage. You’d need to hire an electrician to install your new light fittings or electrical equipment, like ovens. And you’d need a plumbing tradie to help with plumbing tasks, like fitting new taps and pipes, or gas plumbing tasks like installing or repairing heaters and stoves. Your tradie will start by asking questions about the issues you’re having, then they’ll do a physical inspection of the area to assess the work needed. They’ll use their specialist tools and equipment to repair, install, or replace parts to get everything working properly.

Carpentry & cabinet making tradies

Tradesmen are usually qualified professionals, so they’re ideally suited to tasks that need a higher skill level than a handyman. Carpenters and cabinet makers are in high demand for installing new cabinets, custom-making furniture and installing built-in robes and cupboards. They’ll measure your space to ensure the furniture and built-ins fit perfectly and match your existing decor. Then they’ll work with a range of equipment and tools (onsite or offsite) to cut and shape the wood, then assemble any parts to create your finished product.

Home exterior work tradies

Tradesmen can help provide a professional finish to your exterior building tasks. For example, installing or repairing balustrades. Your professional tradesmen will measure, fit and install glass, metal, or wood balustrades to make your balcony area or stairs safe while matching the design of your home. Once they’ve established a safe work zone, they’ll remove the old balustrades before installing the new parts. Another popular exterior task is installing or upgrading awnings. Your tradie can pull down old, broken, or faded awnings and help you choose a new awning to match your house and surroundings. Then they’ll carefully install the new awning so that it is safe and secure.

Concrete repairs & resurfacing tradies

When concrete is damaged, it can create trip hazards, and let in water, dirt and other pests, which can cause further damage. Concrete resurfacing can help repair damage and give your property an instant update with coloured concrete overlays and/or designs. Your tradie will first assess the damage, then repair or replace any broken areas. Then they may clean the existing area with high-pressure hoses or chemicals. Once the area is clean and prepared, they’ll mix up a thin, concrete-based surface compound that will cover the area.

Experienced Plasterer — Ceiling Skim Coat Repair (Picnic Point)

$180

Picnic Point NSW 2213, Australia

12th Feb 2026

Small but precise ceiling plaster repair in a 1960s home being prepared for sale. This needs someone with genuine plastering experience. The original skim coat on a bedroom ceiling has delaminated from the plasterboard sheet underneath. Affected area is approximately 500mm long. I've already scraped back all loose material to a firm edge and confirmed the plasterboard sheet underneath is in solid condition — no moisture damage, no structural issues. The delaminated material is 1.1–1.3mm thick, consistent with the original finishing skim. Need someone to re-skim the exposed area with appropriate setting compound, feathered out to blend invisibly with the surrounding ceiling. The ceiling will be professionally painted afterwards so the finish needs to be seamless — this is for a sale, not a rental patch job. When you make an offer, please include: What compound/product you'd use Your availability in the next 1–2 weeks

Excellent workmanship and outcome. Danny has a lot of skill and knowledge of his trade. Recommend to all. He also helped with a few extra patches as well. Thank you Danny!

Install Mirror onto gyprock wall

$70

Picnic Point NSW 2213, Australia

25th Jan 2026

I need a professional to securely mount an IKEA Stockholm 2025 mirror (90x90cm) on a Gyprock/plasterboard wall. The mirror weighs approximately 13.5kg and has a built-in shelf, so it must be perfectly level and structurally sound. Scope of Work: Assessment: Identify if studs are available at the desired location. Installation: Securely hang the mirror using appropriate heavy-duty fixings. If no studs are available, you must use metal toggle bolts or hollow wall anchors (Molly bolts) rated for at least 20kg. Precision: Ensure the mirror is 100% level (the shelf makes any tilt very obvious). Safety: The installation must be flush and secure enough to handle the weight of the mirror plus items placed on its shelf. Requirements: Experience: Proven experience hanging heavy mirrors or artwork on hollow walls. Insurance: Must have active Public Liability Insurance. Tools: Please bring your own stud finder, spirit level, drill, and heavy-duty hollow wall anchors (unless you specify otherwise).

Tony was great, second time he has helped me with a wall fixture. Will hire again.

Replace rotted lower section of gyprock wall

$500

Rockdale NSW, Australia

19th Jan 2026

I would like an experienced carpenter/builder to rebuild the lower section of a gyprock wall (laundry) where moisture has caused the timber bottom plate and bottom of studs to rot & crumble away. In 2-5 years, I would like to rebuild this entire room (as understand the issue is bigger than this one wall!), but for now, would simply like the wall made structurally sound and rotten material replaced with moisture-resistant alternatives to buy me some time before I plan a bigger renovation. Will need to make the studs structurally sound (add something to support them at the bottom as no longer touching concrete base), add new bottom plate (something moisture-resistant please), and replace the missing gyprock & door framing. I've removed lots of the damaged materials so you can clearly see the issue!

He was very friendly and did a great job with the repair.

Remove awning above door

$100

Bankstown, New South Wales

18th Jan 2026

Reattach a damaged aluminium awning above a door will require a ladder, if unable to attach simply remove from the wall

Practical solid advice did the job as requested and advised that it wasn’t able to be repaired so simply removed it and sought instructions on what to do with the spare parts.
