What does a tradesman do?

Tradesmen (and tradeswomen!) can help you tackle the tasks that need the expertise, tools, and knowledge that only a qualified local tradie can give. Whether you're looking for a builder, craftsman, or someone with experience in skilled labour, you can find a tradie to help with tasks like:

Electrical & plumbing

When you hire tradesmen to work with electricity, gas, or water, they’ll need special qualifications, training, and equipment to keep you and your house safe from fires, flooding, and property damage. You’d need to hire an electrician to install your new light fittings or electrical equipment, like ovens. And you’d need a plumbing tradie to help with plumbing tasks, like fitting new taps and pipes, or gas plumbing tasks like installing or repairing heaters and stoves. Your tradie will start by asking questions about the issues you’re having, then they’ll do a physical inspection of the area to assess the work needed. They’ll use their specialist tools and equipment to repair, install, or replace parts to get everything working properly.

Carpentry & cabinet making

Tradesmen are usually qualified professionals, so they’re ideally suited to tasks that need a higher skill level than a handyman. Carpenters and cabinet makers are in high demand for installing new cabinets, custom-making furniture, and installing built-in robes and cupboards. They’ll measure your space to ensure the furniture and built-ins fit perfectly and match your existing decor. Then they’ll work with a range of equipment and tools (onsite or offsite) to cut and shape the wood, then assemble any parts to create your finished product.

Exteriors

Tradesmen can help provide a professional finish to your exterior building tasks. For example, installing or repairing balustrades. Your professional tradesmen will measure, fit and install glass, metal, or wood balustrades to make your balcony area or stairs safe while matching the design of your home. Once they’ve established a safe work zone, they’ll remove the old balustrades before installing the new parts. Another popular exterior task is installing or upgrading awnings. Your tradie can pull down old, broken, or faded awnings and help you choose a new awning to match your house and surroundings. Using the right tools, they’ll carefully install the new awning so that it is safe and secure.

Concrete repairs & resurfacing

When concrete is damaged, it can create trip hazards, and let in water, dirt and other pests, which can cause further damage. Concrete resurfacing can help repair damage and give your property an instant update with coloured concrete overlays and/or designs. Your tradie will first assess the damage, then repair or replace any broken areas. Then they may clean the existing area with high-pressure hoses or chemicals. Once the area is clean and prepared, they’ll mix up a thin, concrete-based surface compound that will cover the area.

Electrician to hardwire sauna heater to existing dedicated circuit

£100

De Beauvoir Town, Greater London, N1

1st Mar 2026

Need a qualified electrician to connect a 4.5kW sauna heater (BC45, 230V single phase) to an existing dedicated sauna circuit. Most of the heavy lifting has already been done by a previous electrician - the circuit is already installed and live in the consumer unit (B32 MCB on its own breaker labelled “SAUNA”), cable has been run from the board to the sauna room, and a Contactum rotary isolator switch is already mounted on the wall. The issue is the previous electrician hardwired the infrared sauna panels but didn’t connect the main stone heater, which has its own separate cable with crimped terminals that needs wiring in. The heater is already in position and ready to go - it just needs connecting to the existing circuit, either into the isolator or junction box that’s already there. Photos attached show the existing isolator and cable run, the consumer unit with the dedicated sauna breaker, the heater’s cable/terminals, and the heater unit itself. Happy to discuss on-site but it should be a relatively quick job given everything is already in place.

Great work - professional

Electrician Needed - Hardwire Sauna

£300

Canonbury, Greater London

25th Feb 2026

Need a qualified electrician to hardwire a new Insignia MXOS1700 hybrid sauna inside my home. This is a hardwire-only unit - it has no plug and must be permanently wired to a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit. It's an outdoor-rated model being installed indoors so no external cable runs needed. Electrical Specs (from manufacturer manual): Harvia 4kW stove - 240V single phase 4 x far infrared heaters - 1,320W total (240V single phase) LED lighting, Bluetooth, control panel - 120W (240V single phase) Total load: 5,792W / 24.2 amps 240V single phase only - no three-phase or supply upgrade needed Requires dedicated 32A MCB and 6mm² T&E cable minimum (depending on run length) Scope of Work: Survey cable route from consumer unit to sauna location inside the property Install dedicated 32A MCB in consumer unit (spare way needed - can send photos of fuse board in advance) Run Twin & Earth cable from consumer unit to sauna Install local isolation switch near sauna Make final hardwire connection at sauna's electrical junction box Test, certify, and issue Electrical Installation Certificate (Part P compliant, BS 7671 18th Edition) I have the full Insignia installation manual and Harvia wiring diagram available on the day. Timing: Must arrive by 12pm Friday. Estimated job duration 1.5-3 hours. Note on cable run: The sauna is on the first floor, directly above the consumer unit on the ground floor. They share the same wall, so the cable run should be very short and straightforward - essentially straight up one level.

External render

£1,500

Clapham, Greater London, SW4

23rd Feb 2026

I have had some issues with damp at my property due to issues with an external render.  I am looking to render one external wall (ground floor) at my property to avoid moisture coming inside.  There are cracks in the render and it measured high in moisture in many places. There was previously a lean to shed which has now been removed.  Instructions are: remove the render back to the brickwork. Treat the bricks with three coats of Cementone Aquapruf then render the wall with a moisture inhibitor in the moisture mix. Ensure that the new render ends above ground level in a bell mouth drip.

Repair a hole in drywall and re-fit tiles

£200

Chelsea, Greater London

4th Feb 2026

I need this hole in my drywall fixed, and the tiles re-fitted. I'd estimate the entire area that would need to be cut out between studs is around 80cm in width and 75cm in height. I still have the tiles that have come off and they aren't damaged. Aside from the tiles which I already have, I'd need the materials to be provided as part of the job. There is free parking in a carpark at the front of the building, however, the vehicle would need to be able to fit under an archway, smaller vans do fit through but a large van wouldn't fit.
