Top Timber Flooring related questions

When requesting quotes for hardwood timber flooring, you'll typically receive prices either by the square metre or for the entire job. Regardless of the format, the cost will depend on the type and grade of timber you select. Prices can range from $50 per square metre for low-grade timber to more than $150 per square metre for higher-grade timber. Take note that these prices are indicative and may vary depending on factors such as the size of the area, the complexity of the job and any additional services required for the installation. For a more accurate estimation, request a detailed quote before accepting an offer from a Tasker.

For non-installation services like timber floor polish and restoration, you can also directly enquire to your chosen Tasker for a comprehensive breakdown of the pricing.

Typically, preparing the area before installation can span up to a week, during which the boards are left open in the room where they’ll be laid. The installation process generally requires around one to three days, depending on the complexity of the area. Finally, the timber floor polish and cleanup may extend the timeline by one or two more days. Overall, you can expect the service to run for roughly two weeks. For a more precise approximation, consult your Tasker about the duration of the service.

In Australia, licence requirements for timber flooring installation vary by state. Some states like Queensland mandate a floor finishing licence for jobs above $3,300. On the other hand, others like New South Wales don't require a licence for most timber floors. However, a carpentry licence might be necessary for load-bearing timber floors.

To be safe, always check the licencing requirements with your state's building commission or fair trading department before starting any timber flooring work. Also, confirm with a Tasker whether they have the relevant timber flooring licence and insurance before accepting an offer.

There are two main types of timber flooring: plank floorboards, made from hard or soft woods, and engineered floorboards, which use a combination of woods to create a stronger surface. You can also achieve a timber-like appearance with floating floorboards made from laminate, cork or bamboo.

The ideal flooring for your home depends on where it will be installed. Engineered flooring is the perfect choice for high-moisture areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Since it has a layered construction, engineered flooring has the flexion to handle moisture better than solid hardwood. It also performs well on concrete subfloors. On the other hand, solid hardwood has superior aesthetic value and exceptional durability. It is a great option for drier areas like living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms, but may require more maintenance in high-traffic zones. Regardless of the material you choose, keep your floors looking their best by regularly enlisting the help of a timber floor polisher.

Compared to other options like tiles and carpets, wood flooring is more susceptible to damage from everyday activities such as walking in high heels, moving furniture around or dropping heavy items. However, these minor dents and scratches can usually be easily sanded away. In fact, timber floors are more durable than vinyl and laminates, which show wear and tear more readily.

Before your floors are installed, try to empty the room completely. This includes removing drapes, blinds, pictures, and all furniture. If you need assistance moving furniture out of your home, especially if heavy lifting is required, consider getting a Tasker to do it for you.

Also, prepare an outdoor area where floorboard installers can work, equipped with electricity and lighting and easy access to the house.

What does a timber floor installation service include?

From installation to repairs and polishing, flooring experts are dedicated to helping you enhance the beauty and functionality of your home. When you book a service on Airtasker, you can expect comprehensive assistance for the following:

Floorboard selection

Are you uncertain which floorboards will best suit your space? Count on your Tasker for expert guidance. Sorting through the plethora of options available can overwhelm you, especially if you're short on time to conduct thorough research. Your Tasker can provide a confident recommendation tailored to your needs.

Area preparation

Before your new floor can be laid, installers must first prepare the area. The underlying floor has to be dry, clean, and stable for the best results. Installers will approach this step depending on the subfloor materials and the type of floorboards. At this stage, all skirting boards, doors, and door frames will also be removed. Finally, timber floorboards will be left to acclimatise as they need to adjust to the room’s temperature and moisture levels to prevent warping and shrinkage.

Timber flooring installation

The installation begins with your Tasker laying out moisture-proofing and insulation materials, which should help reduce noise and regulate the house’s temperature. Once the insulation is in place, they can start installing the new boards. The installation process will vary depending on the material of the boards. Solid timber floors require a substructure, while engineered boards can be laid directly over tiles, concrete or other wooden boards. Installers usually install new boards parallel to the longest length of the room or perpendicular to the front door to get the best visual effect.

Afterwards, they will plan the layout to keep the variations in the timber evenly distributed. They’ll glue or nail your floorboards in place, leaving a small gap around the perimeter for expansion, which they will later cover with skirting boards.

Cutting and shaping

Once the bulk of the floor is laid, the installer will carefully measure, cut and fit smaller board sections around corners, cabinets and doorways. This ensures a seamless finish that perfectly aligns with the overall design.

Timber floor polish and coating

Solid floorboards may need to be sanded to remove any scratches or imperfections and then painted with a high-quality polish to restore their shine. A protective coating will be applied as a final step to seal the wood to make it resistant to wear and tear. It is recommended to have your floors serviced regularly for timber floor polish and coat to maintain their beauty and durability, prolonging their lifespan while keeping them looking new.

Timber flooring repairs and restoration

Over time, wooden floors may sustain damage from various factors such as water spills, furniture scratches and dirt. Minor damage can often be fixed by refinishing the surface with light sanding, a new coat of sealant and polishing. For more extensive structural damage, consult a floor repair specialist to assess and correctly fix the problem.

Stain 3 timber decks — Hurstbridge

$1,000

Hurstbridge VIC 3099, Australia

14th Sep 2026

Looking for someone to stain three timber decks at a property in Hurstbridge. The decks have just been professionally cleaned with stripping chemicals, so they should be ready to stain. I'd like you to supply the stain as well as the labour — please include materials in your offer and tell me what product you plan to use. About the photos: two of the three decks are shown as they are now, straight after the clean. The rear deck photo is an old one — I'll swap it for a current shot next time I'm at the house. I've also attached a photo of the front decks after their last stain so you can see the colour and finish I'm after. I'm having trouble getting offical measurements, but I can head out to verify before we agree on the final price. My estimate is 60m2. In the mean time, I've picked an arbitrary budget. There's a key lock box at the property, so you can let yourself in and out — no need to coordinate with me on the day. The house will be empty. Happy to arrange a time for you to take a look before quoting, and to answer any questions.

Repair water-damaged floating timber floor + moisture check

$500

Vaucluse NSW, Australia

5th Sep 2026

I recently had a hot water leak in the laundry that spilled into the adjoining kitchen / hall area. At the time, all visible water was removed and professional dehumidifiers /dryers were used, so I believed everything had dried properly. I was then away overseas and have just returned to find that sections of the floating timber flooring have started to buckle/lift and gaps have appeared between some boards. Approximately 5-6 boards are affected. They also had a heavy piece of furniture pushing pressure onto it which may have contributed to the uneven expansion / shrinkage. The floors were already older / not in perfect condition, so I’m not looking to replace the entire floor. I’m hoping to salvage and repair the existing boards wherever possible. I’m looking for an experienced timber flooring specialist who can assess the affected area, including checking the timber and underneath for residual / trapped moisture. I understand the repair may need to be completed in two stages: initially lifting / removing the affected boards so the area underneath can be properly inspected and, if necessary, allowed to dry completely; then returning once moisture levels are appropriate to relay / reseat and repair the existing flooring. Ideally you will have a moisture meter and experience with water-damaged floating timber floors. The priority is making sure everything underneath is properly dry before the floor is closed back up, while preserving as much of the existing flooring as possible. I have availability this tomorrow (Sunday). Thank you

Very very good. Superhero
