Start by cleaning your shears with water and a brush. Dry off the shears, then use sandpaper to remove any traces of rust. Next, file the shears using a diamond hand file. Make sure to hold the blades away from your body and use single smooth strokes. Finally, remove the burrs (thin metal folds) that have formed, then apply lubricant. You can also book a local sharpening specialist to do all this for you!

Start by removing any rust from the shears. You can do this by soaking the shears overnight in white vinegar. Then, mix warm water with dish soap or bathroom cleaner and scrub the dirt away using steel wool or a wire brush. You can also dismantle the shears to clean them thoroughly. Then, rinse the shears and dry them with a towel.

Some pruning basics include:

  • Never prune in late summer or fall

  • Remove around 1/3 of the plant’s growth

  • Cut just above a branch or bud

  • Don’t cut flush with the bark or branch

  • Don’t do stub cuts

  • Prune regularly

The rules of pruning may vary from case to case, and there are many guidelines to consider. If you aren’t 100% sure about what you’re doing, it’s best to leave your plants to an experienced pruning specialist.

If done correctly, pruning helps and does not harm trees. This is because proper pruning can help a tree’s structural integrity and lessen the risk of falling branches. But beware of over-pruning your trees, as this can stress, damage, and eventually kill your plant or tree. You can avoid risks like these by getting an experienced pruning specialist to work on your plants.

The ideal time to prune trees can vary. It’s usually best to prune your trees and shrubs during the late autumn or winter months. Plants are typically dormant during this period, making them less prone to pests and disease. However, some shrubs and trees may also need to be pruned in the summer. You can check with a local pruning specialist if it’s the right time of year to prune back excess growth.

Some Taskers may be skilled in both pruning and weeding tasks. If you need someone who can do both, please specify this detail in your task post. Then, you may confirm with a Tasker whether they have the necessary skills and tools. Alternatively, you may create a separate request for weeding services near you.

What do pruning services include?

An experienced pruning specialist can handle cutting your trees, shrubs, hedges, and other plants. Pruning (or cutting away dead or overgrown branches and stems) improves a plant’s health and appearance.

If it’s your first time getting a Tasker to prune your plants, here’s a rundown of what they may do when they get to work on your garden:

Removing debris and old growth

The Tasker will usually check the plant for dead wood or flowers and remove those bits. They’ll keep the young growth intact. They may also remove old branches if there are new ones below them.

Afterward, a Tasker can take away your pile of garden waste and dispose of it properly. Do you suddenly need a tool that neither you nor your Tasker has? In which case, you can book delivery service to get that set of secateurs or long-reach pruners for your last-minute gardening needs.

Deciding on a shape for the plants

The Tasker will typically assess if a plant needs to be pruned to a certain shape (if the plant is new), or if they need to trim it back to follow a certain look. For example, pyramid shapes allow for plenty of light, great for apple and pear trees.

You can also discuss how you’d like your shrubs or trees to look with your Tasker! Your specialist will then try to achieve your vision for your garden or yard.

Pruning the plants

When pruning plants and trees, the Tasker needs to make good, clean cuts that finish at a point of growth. They’ll get rid of unproductive wood and make sure to encourage the growth of new shoots that will result in lots of fruits and flowers.

The pruning process may vary depending on the type of plant:

  • Plants may be pruned back by around 1/3 of their current growth. If it’s a flowering plant, the specialist may cut back the dead flower stems and stem tops.

  • For hedges, the Tasker will typically follow your desired shape (e.g., a ball). Or, they may trim the sides of a hedge first, pruning the top last. The lowest parts of a hedge should be wider than the top. This structure lets the lower part of the plant get enough sunlight.

  • As for trees, the pruning specialist may ensure the tree keeps growing laterally instead of upwards. For more complex tree trimming services, consider hiring a tree surgeon.

Gardening - de-weeding, pruning, cutting back, removal of waste

£100

Parsons Green, Greater London, SW6

12th Oct 2022

We are moving out of our property in a couple of months and need the garden tidying up a bit. It’s a small area of patio (4.8m x 2.9m) so won’t require any lawn work, just quite a bit of de-weeding, pruning and cutting back of a couple of bushes as well as the removal of the waste. It’s a first floor flat of a period property and the garden is accessed via a ‘trap door’ in the kitchen, so overly large equipment is tricky to get down there. I would imagine it would be a couple of hours work. - Due date: Before Sunday, 30 October 2022
