Top Carpentry related questions
To estimate carpentry work, start by assessing the scope of the project, including the materials, labor, and time required. Measure the dimensions of the area to be worked on and calculate the amount of material (like wood, nails, screws, etc.) needed. Then, estimate the labor cost based on the hourly rate of carpenters in your area, factoring in the time it will take to complete the job. Add a buffer for unexpected expenses or changes, and include any overhead or profit margin if you're offering a formal estimate.
Carpenters or chippies work with wood in all manner of ways.A builder carpenter near me do timber framing for a house or carport to the finishing touches on furniture, carpenters are hired for jobs large and small.
Not all carpenters offer the same services. An experienced cabinet maker may not be the best choice if you want timber framing done, while a decking expert may not have the credentials to refurbish your furniture. It's advisable to choose a Tasker who has adequate work experience in the specific job of your request.
Yes. While some carpenters have specific areas of expertise, you can employ someone to do a number of small woodworking jobs in one visit. This can be the same job in a number of rooms or different jobs throughout the house. Remember though that some carpentry jobs require more than one day to complete.
From specific tasks such as cabinet maker to more general terms like artisan, joiner, or woodworker, there are plenty of variations for carpentry workers. Depending on their specialty and level of training, you may find that a carpenter comes under a different name. A carpenter with advanced skills, experience, and the proper tools can be referred to as a master carpenter. Someone working on assembling moulds and concrete structures for large-scale construction is called a formwork carpenter.Â
In Australia, certified carpenters will have normally completed a Certificate III in Carpentry and Joinery (or higher certification), or a similar course through TAFE, and an apprenticeship. You may find that older carpenters learned their skills through a traineeship. Carpenters working on construction sites must also have a Construction Induction Card (white card).
For certain types of carpentry tasks, you may need to enquire as to what specialist licenses may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.
A carpenter primarily focuses on working with wood to construct or repair structures such as furniture, framing, doors, and cabinets. They typically specialize in tasks that require woodworking skills, like installing trim or building custom pieces. A builder, on the other hand, oversees and manages the overall construction of buildings or structures, coordinating different trades (including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical) to ensure a project is completed on time and within budget.
Carpenters need to be careful of several safety risks, such as sharp tools, heavy machinery, and working with materials that can splinter or cause injury. They should also be mindful of their posture and body mechanics to avoid repetitive strain or injury, especially when lifting or carrying heavy materials. Additionally, carpenters should follow proper safety protocols when working in environments with dust, fumes, or potential hazards like electrical wiring to minimize health risks and ensure safe work conditions.
Top Joiner related questions
Joinery sets itself apart from carpentry in the way it’s done and in the scale it’s in. While both work on wood installations, carpentry is usually done on-site on a smaller scale and usually on fixtures already. In comparison, joinery is done at a larger scale in a dedicated workshop, typically building bigger home installations like stairs, doors, and door and window frames.
No, especially since joinery is the type of work that is usually done in a workshop rather than on-site. Planers, circular saws, and other machinery are involved in crafting some of these larger-scale installations for your home. Suppose that some joinery can indeed be done on-site. Taskers are experts who are expected to come to work prepared not just with the skills but also the tools needed to get the job done.
This would depend on how much joinery is needed to be made, be it for repairs and minor renovations or a construction project built from the ground up. Regardless, expect a bit of time for local joiners near you to finish your joinery in their workshops and deliver them to your home or site. It is best to discuss timelines with your Taskers to manage expectations.
Typically, yes. However, how long a Tasker will guarantee the work would vary from case to case. For all we know, a Tasker may be confident about the work and give an extended warranty. Regardless, Taskers will work on the projects to the best of their ability to ensure that the finished product would last long. For specific warranty questions, it would be best to discuss this with your Tasker.
Yes, you can, but it comes with certain risks. For one, you would likely be unable to come up with something of similar or better quality than someone who is more qualified and has years of experience to deal with these kinds of jobs. This is where Airtasker comes in by connecting you to different Taskers who can do it for you with high quality and less effort, at a reasonable cost.
There is no correct answer for this as this would depend on the complexity of the work and the amount of joinery that needs to be made, among other things. You can gauge your estimated costs on the Taskers’ initial quotations when you put up a task. However, these costs may be subject to negotiation and change depending on how the project goes.

What do carpenters near me do?
Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring carpenters near me for small jobs or chippy can help you with many different tasks. Carpenters use other types of power tools and hand tools to carry on building and construction work.Â
Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles, or plaster work. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking, and window frames all fall into this second category.Â
Carpenters for decking
Many Australian homes are blessed with a large backyard and plenty of sunny hours to enjoy that space. A decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.Â
Carpenters for cabinet-making
Cabinet makers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focused on fine details. Cabinet makers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.Â
Refinishing carpentry
While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at jobs like wood staining and removal of old finish. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing, or a similar aspect of your home.
Custom made furniture
A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom-made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables, or a shoe rack, or even kitchen installation there’s someone nearby who can help.Â
Joinery carpenters
Joinery services encompass the craftsmanship of creating and joining wood in workshops, distinct from on-site carpentry. These services range from bespoke projects to crafting timber buildings, emphasizing precision and passion. Joiners play a crucial role in interior woodwork, window and door production, and specialized construction, offering tailored and quality timber solutions.

Replace a wall cabinet with shelves
$350
Bardon QLD 4065, Australia
21st Feb 2026
I would like to remove an existing wall kitchen cabinet (above the microwave) and replace it with two open shelves. Both shelves need to be positioned precisely. The first shelf must be installed directly above the tiles (see photo). There is a power outlet nearby, so care must be taken to avoid drilling into electrical cabling. There is also a power outlet fixed into the cabinet itself. This outlet will need to be removed during the cabinet removal and reinstalled afterwards. The shelves need to be deeper to accommodate a bench-top oven. The current cabinet depth is about 30 cm, and the new shelves should be approximately 50 cm deep. The wall is hard (likely brick or concrete), so appropriate tools and fixings will be required. Due to the presence of electrical wiring and the hard wall, I am looking for someone experienced. I am happy to purchase the required materials from Bunnings if needed. Please include: experience with brick/concrete drilling examples/photos of similar work confirmation you can handle cabinet removal and shelf installation Budget is flexible depending on experience.

Needing a matching lower front/ face panel to stick onto the ikea integrated dishwasher so it is all seamless. Please see diagram for dimensions of dishwasher, these will need to be the internal dimensions. Other cabinet is a 600mm oven cabinet with a specific height to match current odd height cabinets. The problem is that the set of drawers on one side and the cabinet on the other side of the oven is 650 high which will be difficult for a 600mm oven. I’ve also attached the oven dimensions.

Kitchen Cabinet Maker / Joiner Needed – Dishwasher Cavity Assessment
$100
Queenscliff NSW, Australia
20th Feb 2026
Looking for an experienced kitchen cabinet maker or joiner who understands appliance installation. I need someone to assess my existing dishwasher cavity and advise what type of replacement will work properly (built-under or freestanding), and whether cabinet modifications are required. Background: • My current (broken) dishwasher is semi-integrated. • Harvey Norman advised I should replace it with a built-under, so I ordered an Asko. • The Asko installers said a cabinet panel is missing to fix it properly, so built-under is not suitable and I should order freestanding. • The cavity width is exactly 600mm. • Most freestanding dishwashers are 600mm or only a few millimetres under. • For example, Asko advised their 599mm model cannot be installed with zero tolerance. • Smeg advised their 598mm model can, but I’m hesitant to proceed without proper assessment. • My preference is built-under if feasible. I’m looking for someone experienced to: • Measure and inspect the cavity • Confirm what dishwasher type is suitable • Identify what panel/support may be missing • If required, provide a quote for making minor modifications. I’d like a proper long-term solution.

8th Oct 2025
Hello, We are looking for an experienced carpenter, joiner, or skilled handyman to inspect and secure some retail shelving at our store, in Epping. The Issue: Several layers of our custom wall-mounted shelving units have started to pull away from the wall. This is a significant safety concern as we are worried about their stability and the risk of collapse. The shelves appear to be glued and possibly screwed to the wall, and some of these connections have failed. The Job: This is primarily an "inspect and secure" job. The scope of work includes: 1. Attending the site to thoroughly assess the structure and stability of the entire wall shelving unit. 2. Identifying all the points where the shelves have detached from the wall. 3. Supplying and installing small, discreet L-brackets underneath the affected shelves to securely re-fasten them to the wall. 4. Ensuring the installed brackets are strong, neatly fitted, and provide robust support to prevent any further movement. 5. Leaving the area clean and tidy. The primary goal is to make the shelving safe and secure. Please note: The successful contractor MUST supply all necessary materials, including appropriate L-brackets and wall fixings (e.g., plasterboard anchors, screws). The cost for these materials must be included in your offer. Requirements: - MUST have proven experience with commercial joinery, cabinet making, or carpentry. - You must supply all your own tools AND all necessary materials (as mentioned above). Location & Timing: Location: Pacific Epping, 571-583 High St, Epping VIC 3076 (exact location will be provided once the task is assigned) When: As this is a safety hazard, we need this repair completed as soon as possible. Please state your availability in your offer. Please provide a comprehensive quote for the complete job. Your offer should include your call-out/inspection fee, all labour, and the cost of supplying all required brackets and fixings. Thank you.
Scott was professional and thorough in inspecting and securing the retail shelving at Epping. The work was completed efficiently. Highly recommended.
