Top Carpentry related questions
To estimate carpentry work, start by assessing the scope of the project, including the materials, labor, and time required. Measure the dimensions of the area to be worked on and calculate the amount of material (like wood, nails, screws, etc.) needed. Then, estimate the labor cost based on the hourly rate of carpenters in your area, factoring in the time it will take to complete the job. Add a buffer for unexpected expenses or changes, and include any overhead or profit margin if you're offering a formal estimate.
Carpenters or chippies work with wood in all manner of ways.A builder carpenter near me do timber framing for a house or carport to the finishing touches on furniture, carpenters are hired for jobs large and small.
Not all carpenters offer the same services. An experienced cabinet maker may not be the best choice if you want timber framing done, while a decking expert may not have the credentials to refurbish your furniture. It's advisable to choose a Tasker who has adequate work experience in the specific job of your request.
Yes. While some carpenters have specific areas of expertise, you can employ someone to do a number of small woodworking jobs in one visit. This can be the same job in a number of rooms or different jobs throughout the house. Remember though that some carpentry jobs require more than one day to complete.
From specific tasks such as cabinet maker to more general terms like artisan, joiner, or woodworker, there are plenty of variations for carpentry workers. Depending on their specialty and level of training, you may find that a carpenter comes under a different name. A carpenter with advanced skills, experience, and the proper tools can be referred to as a master carpenter. Someone working on assembling moulds and concrete structures for large-scale construction is called a formwork carpenter.
In Australia, certified carpenters will have normally completed a Certificate III in Carpentry and Joinery (or higher certification), or a similar course through TAFE, and an apprenticeship. You may find that older carpenters learned their skills through a traineeship. Carpenters working on construction sites must also have a Construction Induction Card (white card).
For certain types of carpentry tasks, you may need to enquire as to what specialist licenses may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.
A carpenter primarily focuses on working with wood to construct or repair structures such as furniture, framing, doors, and cabinets. They typically specialize in tasks that require woodworking skills, like installing trim or building custom pieces. A builder, on the other hand, oversees and manages the overall construction of buildings or structures, coordinating different trades (including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical) to ensure a project is completed on time and within budget.
Carpenters need to be careful of several safety risks, such as sharp tools, heavy machinery, and working with materials that can splinter or cause injury. They should also be mindful of their posture and body mechanics to avoid repetitive strain or injury, especially when lifting or carrying heavy materials. Additionally, carpenters should follow proper safety protocols when working in environments with dust, fumes, or potential hazards like electrical wiring to minimize health risks and ensure safe work conditions.
Top Joiner related questions
Joinery sets itself apart from carpentry in the way it’s done and in the scale it’s in. While both work on wood installations, carpentry is usually done on-site on a smaller scale and usually on fixtures already. In comparison, joinery is done at a larger scale in a dedicated workshop, typically building bigger home installations like stairs, doors, and door and window frames.
No, especially since joinery is the type of work that is usually done in a workshop rather than on-site. Planers, circular saws, and other machinery are involved in crafting some of these larger-scale installations for your home. Suppose that some joinery can indeed be done on-site. Taskers are experts who are expected to come to work prepared not just with the skills but also the tools needed to get the job done.
This would depend on how much joinery is needed to be made, be it for repairs and minor renovations or a construction project built from the ground up. Regardless, expect a bit of time for local joiners near you to finish your joinery in their workshops and deliver them to your home or site. It is best to discuss timelines with your Taskers to manage expectations.
Typically, yes. However, how long a Tasker will guarantee the work would vary from case to case. For all we know, a Tasker may be confident about the work and give an extended warranty. Regardless, Taskers will work on the projects to the best of their ability to ensure that the finished product would last long. For specific warranty questions, it would be best to discuss this with your Tasker.
Yes, you can, but it comes with certain risks. For one, you would likely be unable to come up with something of similar or better quality than someone who is more qualified and has years of experience to deal with these kinds of jobs. This is where Airtasker comes in by connecting you to different Taskers who can do it for you with high quality and less effort, at a reasonable cost.
There is no correct answer for this as this would depend on the complexity of the work and the amount of joinery that needs to be made, among other things. You can gauge your estimated costs on the Taskers’ initial quotations when you put up a task. However, these costs may be subject to negotiation and change depending on how the project goes.

What do carpenters near me do?
Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring carpenters near me for small jobs or chippy can help you with many different tasks. Carpenters use other types of power tools and hand tools to carry on building and construction work.
Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles, or plaster work. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking, and window frames all fall into this second category.
Carpenters for decking
Many Australian homes are blessed with a large backyard and plenty of sunny hours to enjoy that space. A decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.
Carpenters for cabinet-making
Cabinet makers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focused on fine details. Cabinet makers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.
Refinishing carpentry
While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at jobs like wood staining and removal of old finish. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing, or a similar aspect of your home.
Custom made furniture
A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom-made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables, or a shoe rack, or even kitchen installation there’s someone nearby who can help.
Joinery carpenters
Joinery services encompass the craftsmanship of creating and joining wood in workshops, distinct from on-site carpentry. These services range from bespoke projects to crafting timber buildings, emphasizing precision and passion. Joiners play a crucial role in interior woodwork, window and door production, and specialized construction, offering tailored and quality timber solutions.

Stain 3 timber decks — Hurstbridge
$1,000
Hurstbridge VIC 3099, Australia
14th Sep 2026
Looking for someone to stain three timber decks at a property in Hurstbridge. The decks have just been professionally cleaned with stripping chemicals, so they should be ready to stain. I'd like you to supply the stain as well as the labour — please include materials in your offer and tell me what product you plan to use. About the photos: two of the three decks are shown as they are now, straight after the clean. The rear deck photo is an old one — I'll swap it for a current shot next time I'm at the house. I've also attached a photo of the front decks after their last stain so you can see the colour and finish I'm after. I'm having trouble getting offical measurements, but I can head out to verify before we agree on the final price. My estimate is 60m2. In the mean time, I've picked an arbitrary budget. There's a key lock box at the property, so you can let yourself in and out — no need to coordinate with me on the day. The house will be empty. Happy to arrange a time for you to take a look before quoting, and to answer any questions.

Replace timber sleepers around automatic gate opening
$500
Collingwood Park, QLD
14th Sep 2026
I need the existing timber sleepers shown in the photos replaced with new treated timber sleepers. The sleepers form the edging around the narrow garden-bed/gate-opening area that allows my automatic gate to operate. Work required: - Remove the existing old timber sleepers. - Supply all materials, including suitable treated timber sleepers, fixings and anything else required to complete the job properly. - Install the new sleepers securely and neatly. - The sleepers need to be replaced on both long sides as well as the ends. - Length is approximately 3.5m on each side. - Please inspect the area and take your own measurements before purchasing materials. - Ensure the finished sleepers are properly aligned, secure and look neat. - Important: the automatic gate needs to continue opening and closing freely, so the finished work must not interfere with the gate, its track or operation. - Clean up the work area when finished. Experience preferred: Someone experienced with garden beds, treated timber sleepers, landscaping, construction or handyman work. I’m looking for someone who will take care with the measurements and finish the job properly rather than just doing a basic replacement. Budget: $500 maximum, including all materials. The attached photos show the existing setup and condition of the current timber.
Find and repair roof leak causing bathroom ceiling water stain
$250
Newtown QLD 4350, Australia
14th Sep 2026
Hi, I’m looking for an appropriately licensed/insured tradesperson to investigate and repair what appears to be a small roof leak above our bathroom. There is visible water staining on the bathroom ceiling near the cornice (photo attached). There is only a roof above this area, so I would like the roof/roof space inspected to determine where the water is entering. Looking for someone who can: Inspect the roof and roof space above the affected area Identify the source of the water ingress Repair/seal the source of the leak Check the affected ceiling/plasterboard for any significant damage Advise whether the ceiling needs repair or simply stain-blocking/repainting once completely dry Please include any materials required in your offer, or let me know separately if materials are likely to be additional. I’m mainly concerned with fixing the source properly rather than just covering the ceiling stain.
Carpenter needed – add ceiling framing/fixing points for garage door
$350
Carindale QLD 4152, Australia
12th Sep 2026
I’ve recently had a panel lift/sectional garage door retrofitted to my garage in Carindale. Because the garage wasn’t originally set up for this type of door, there weren’t suitable fixing points in the ceiling where the installer needed to attach the overhead tracks/brackets. The garage door company is coming back to rectify the installation, but before they return I’d like suitable structural fixing points installed above the ceiling. There is good access to the roof/ceiling space via a manhole, with plenty of room to work. I’m looking for an experienced carpenter/framer who can assess the existing roof/ceiling framing and install appropriate timber blocking/noggins or other suitable structural framing at the required locations, so the garage door installer has solid fixing points for their brackets. I can provide photos and indicate where the garage door brackets/fixing points need to be located. Location: Carindale, QLD Timing: Ideally completed before the garage door company returns. Please bring the appropriate timber, fixings and tools. When responding, please let me know if you have experience with roof/ceiling framing or preparing fixing points for garage doors.

Carpenter needed to finish timber border around doors/windows
$500
Leichhardt NSW 2040, Australia
9th Sep 2026
We recently had blinds removed from around these timber doors/windows, and the top section has been left looking unfinished. I’m not exactly sure what needs to be done, but I’d like the top of the doors/windows to look the same as the timber sides, so it looks like there is one continuous, finished timber border all the way around. This may mean a new architrave to match the left and righthand sides Looking for someone experienced with carpentry/joinery who can look at the photos, advise on the best way to do this, and complete the work. Ideally the new timber/finish would match the existing frame as closely as possible. Please include your proposed approach and approximate materials cost in your offer. It would need to be done some time this Sunday or Monday. Thanks!
Daniel did a great job. Punctual, good communication, transparent and fixed the acritrave well. Would definitely book again!

Experienced Cabinetmaker/Joiner Needed – Modify 2 TV Units
$900
Yagoona NSW 2199, Australia
13th Sep 2026
I’m looking for an experienced cabinetmaker, furniture maker or joiner to professionally modify and join two genuine Castlery Sloane TV units so they appear as one long continuous unit. My main requirement is the front appearance. When standing in front of the finished unit, I do not want an obvious vertical gap where the two cabinets meet. The Sloane has fluted/reeded detailing on the cabinet ends, so the two inner ends where the units meet may need to be carefully modified, removed, rebuilt or otherwise adapted by someone experienced with furniture construction. Important: • I want to retain the original Sloane appearance, including the existing top, colour, fluted front and outer end panels. • I do not want a separate 3m benchtop placed over both cabinets as the solution. • Only the two inner meeting sides should be altered where necessary. • The finished outer ends should remain original. • Castlery’s assembly instructions show the main cabinet as “Body ×1”, so I understand the carcass is supplied as one assembled body rather than separate top/side panels. • I’m happy for an experienced tradesperson to recommend the best structural method after inspecting the construction. I haven’t purchased the two units yet because I want to confirm that the modification can be successfully completed first. I can provide detailed photos, measurements, the Castlery product link and assembly instructions. Please only make an offer if you have experience modifying finished furniture/cabinetry and are confident discussing possible methods for achieving this result. Location: Yagoona NSW.

I’m getting a new fridge delivered and it will be 20-30mm taller than the one I current have. I need the two panels above the fridge to be nearly cut by 20-30mm. The lower hinges will need to be moved up on the panel and the handles re-fixed. The rear internal carcass will also need to be cut out by 20-30mm to allow for the additional fridge height. Ideally late Monday afternoon would be best. Otherwise Tuesday.
Thanks Adam. Easy to work with and came on time.
IKEA Pax Wardrobe Built-In Finish (Cabinet Maker / Joiner Preferred)
$750
Joondanna WA 6060, Australia
9th Jul 2026
Hello, I'm looking for someone with experience in cabinetry, built-in wardrobes or joinery to finish an IKEA PAX wardrobe install to make it appear built in and a tidy finish. Scope of works 1. Install infill/filler panels • Fill the gaps between the wardrobe and the side walls with 16mm MR MDF. • Scribe the panels to the walls where required so everything sits flush. • Ideally use moisture-resistant MDF or similar ready for painting. 2. Install a kicker/plinth board • Cover the existing timber base with a neat kicker/plinth with either 16 or 18mm with 16mm MR MDF. • Continue the plinth across the full width so it appears built in. • Minimise visible joins. 3. Finishing • Light sand and prime final cut and fitted pieces • Colour match GRIMO door at Dulux trade centre • Ideally, paint with low sheen Dulux Aquanamel and using high-density foam roller to achieve sprayed-looking texture • Finish neatly against the existing skirting boards and also IKEA base (may require some filling of gaps above plinth / kicker) • Caulk as required. Notes • Wardrobe is already fully assembled and secured. • Photos attached showing the areas to finish. Please only apply if you've completed similar built-in wardrobe or cabinetry work. Photos of previous jobs would be appreciated. Cheers,
Rodrigo did a great job, was easy to communicate with and completed the job to a very high standard.
