Top Carpentry related questions
To estimate carpentry work, start by assessing the scope of the project, including the materials, labor, and time required. Measure the dimensions of the area to be worked on and calculate the amount of material (like wood, nails, screws, etc.) needed. Then, estimate the labor cost based on the hourly rate of carpenters in your area, factoring in the time it will take to complete the job. Add a buffer for unexpected expenses or changes, and include any overhead or profit margin if you're offering a formal estimate.
Carpenters or chippies work with wood in all manner of ways.A builder carpenter near me do timber framing for a house or carport to the finishing touches on furniture, carpenters are hired for jobs large and small.
Not all carpenters offer the same services. An experienced cabinet maker may not be the best choice if you want timber framing done, while a decking expert may not have the credentials to refurbish your furniture. It's advisable to choose a Tasker who has adequate work experience in the specific job of your request.
Yes. While some carpenters have specific areas of expertise, you can employ someone to do a number of small woodworking jobs in one visit. This can be the same job in a number of rooms or different jobs throughout the house. Remember though that some carpentry jobs require more than one day to complete.
From specific tasks such as cabinet maker to more general terms like artisan, joiner, or woodworker, there are plenty of variations for carpentry workers. Depending on their specialty and level of training, you may find that a carpenter comes under a different name. A carpenter with advanced skills, experience, and the proper tools can be referred to as a master carpenter. Someone working on assembling moulds and concrete structures for large-scale construction is called a formwork carpenter.Â
In Australia, certified carpenters will have normally completed a Certificate III in Carpentry and Joinery (or higher certification), or a similar course through TAFE, and an apprenticeship. You may find that older carpenters learned their skills through a traineeship. Carpenters working on construction sites must also have a Construction Induction Card (white card).
For certain types of carpentry tasks, you may need to enquire as to what specialist licenses may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.
A carpenter primarily focuses on working with wood to construct or repair structures such as furniture, framing, doors, and cabinets. They typically specialize in tasks that require woodworking skills, like installing trim or building custom pieces. A builder, on the other hand, oversees and manages the overall construction of buildings or structures, coordinating different trades (including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical) to ensure a project is completed on time and within budget.
Carpenters need to be careful of several safety risks, such as sharp tools, heavy machinery, and working with materials that can splinter or cause injury. They should also be mindful of their posture and body mechanics to avoid repetitive strain or injury, especially when lifting or carrying heavy materials. Additionally, carpenters should follow proper safety protocols when working in environments with dust, fumes, or potential hazards like electrical wiring to minimize health risks and ensure safe work conditions.
Top Joiner related questions
Joinery sets itself apart from carpentry in the way it’s done and in the scale it’s in. While both work on wood installations, carpentry is usually done on-site on a smaller scale and usually on fixtures already. In comparison, joinery is done at a larger scale in a dedicated workshop, typically building bigger home installations like stairs, doors, and door and window frames.
No, especially since joinery is the type of work that is usually done in a workshop rather than on-site. Planers, circular saws, and other machinery are involved in crafting some of these larger-scale installations for your home. Suppose that some joinery can indeed be done on-site. Taskers are experts who are expected to come to work prepared not just with the skills but also the tools needed to get the job done.
This would depend on how much joinery is needed to be made, be it for repairs and minor renovations or a construction project built from the ground up. Regardless, expect a bit of time for local joiners near you to finish your joinery in their workshops and deliver them to your home or site. It is best to discuss timelines with your Taskers to manage expectations.
Typically, yes. However, how long a Tasker will guarantee the work would vary from case to case. For all we know, a Tasker may be confident about the work and give an extended warranty. Regardless, Taskers will work on the projects to the best of their ability to ensure that the finished product would last long. For specific warranty questions, it would be best to discuss this with your Tasker.
Yes, you can, but it comes with certain risks. For one, you would likely be unable to come up with something of similar or better quality than someone who is more qualified and has years of experience to deal with these kinds of jobs. This is where Airtasker comes in by connecting you to different Taskers who can do it for you with high quality and less effort, at a reasonable cost.
There is no correct answer for this as this would depend on the complexity of the work and the amount of joinery that needs to be made, among other things. You can gauge your estimated costs on the Taskers’ initial quotations when you put up a task. However, these costs may be subject to negotiation and change depending on how the project goes.

What do carpenters near me do?
Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring carpenters near me for small jobs or chippy can help you with many different tasks. Carpenters use other types of power tools and hand tools to carry on building and construction work.Â
Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles, or plaster work. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking, and window frames all fall into this second category.Â
Carpenters for decking
Many Australian homes are blessed with a large backyard and plenty of sunny hours to enjoy that space. A decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.Â
Carpenters for cabinet-making
Cabinet makers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focused on fine details. Cabinet makers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.Â
Refinishing carpentry
While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at jobs like wood staining and removal of old finish. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing, or a similar aspect of your home.
Custom made furniture
A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom-made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables, or a shoe rack, or even kitchen installation there’s someone nearby who can help.Â
Joinery carpenters
Joinery services encompass the craftsmanship of creating and joining wood in workshops, distinct from on-site carpentry. These services range from bespoke projects to crafting timber buildings, emphasizing precision and passion. Joiners play a crucial role in interior woodwork, window and door production, and specialized construction, offering tailored and quality timber solutions.

Handyman/Carpenter to Repair & Re-attach Drawer Front - Hurstville
$80
Hurstville NSW 2220, Australia
7th Sep 2026
Hello, We are looking for an experienced handyman, cabinet maker, or carpenter to repair a broken drawer front at our retail store, in Westfield Hurstville. The Issue: The timber front face of one of our main under-counter glasses storage drawers has completely broken/riipped off the drawer box. The drawer became jammed and had to be forced open, which pulled the face off, splitting the internal MDF backing where the brad nails were secured. The loose timber face has been set aside. The Job: The task is to securely re-attach the timber drawer front to the drawer box. The scope of work includes: 1. Preparing the back of the timber drawer front and the front of the white drawer box (removing old nails/staples). 2. Repairing the damaged MDF backing on the timber front using a strong wood glue, epoxy, or timber blocking to ensure a durable bond. 3. Securely mounting the timber face back onto the drawer box (recommend screwing it from the inside of the box for maximum strength). 4. Checking and adjusting the drawer runners/tracks so the drawer opens and closes smoothly without jamming. 5. Checking the adjacent drawer to ensure it is also aligned and operating smoothly. Requirements: - Proven experience with cabinetry or furniture repairs (specifically re-securing drawer fronts and repairing split MDF/timber). - You must supply all your own tools and materials (heavy-duty wood glue, clamps, screws). - Ability to work cleanly and professionally within a live retail environment. - Public liability insurance is required. Location & Timing: Location: Westfield Hurstville, 3 Cross Street, Hurstville NSW 2220 When: The job can be completed at your earliest convenience. Please state your availability in your offer. Please provide a quote for the complete repair. Thank you.

Fix sticking timber courtyard door
$150
Richmond VIC 3121, Australia
2nd Sep 2026
Timber courtyard door at an apartment in Richmond has become tight and is sticking/rubbing against the frame, particularly around the latch side. It takes more force than it should to open and close and can make quite a bit of noise when closing. Looking for someone to inspect and adjust the door so it opens and closes smoothly. Ideally looking to have this done fairly soon as the apartment is about to be made available for a long-term tenant.
Brendan did a great job. Arrived on time, fixed the door quickly and professionally, and was easy to deal with. Would happily recommend.

Trim Joinery Doors Down

I’m getting a new fridge delivered and it will be 20-30mm taller than the one I current have. I need the two panels above the fridge to be nearly cut by 20-30mm. The lower hinges will need to be moved up on the panel and the handles re-fixed. The rear internal carcass will also need to be cut out by 20-30mm to allow for the additional fridge height. Ideally late Monday afternoon would be best. Otherwise Tuesday.
Thanks Adam. Easy to work with and came on time.
IKEA Pax Wardrobe Built-In Finish (Cabinet Maker / Joiner Preferred)
$750
Joondanna WA 6060, Australia
9th Jul 2026
Hello, I'm looking for someone with experience in cabinetry, built-in wardrobes or joinery to finish an IKEA PAX wardrobe install to make it appear built in and a tidy finish. Scope of works 1. Install infill/filler panels • Fill the gaps between the wardrobe and the side walls with 16mm MR MDF. • Scribe the panels to the walls where required so everything sits flush. • Ideally use moisture-resistant MDF or similar ready for painting. 2. Install a kicker/plinth board • Cover the existing timber base with a neat kicker/plinth with either 16 or 18mm with 16mm MR MDF. • Continue the plinth across the full width so it appears built in. • Minimise visible joins. 3. Finishing • Light sand and prime final cut and fitted pieces • Colour match GRIMO door at Dulux trade centre • Ideally, paint with low sheen Dulux Aquanamel and using high-density foam roller to achieve sprayed-looking texture • Finish neatly against the existing skirting boards and also IKEA base (may require some filling of gaps above plinth / kicker) • Caulk as required. Notes • Wardrobe is already fully assembled and secured. • Photos attached showing the areas to finish. Please only apply if you've completed similar built-in wardrobe or cabinetry work. Photos of previous jobs would be appreciated. Cheers,
Rodrigo did a great job, was easy to communicate with and completed the job to a very high standard.
