Fix creaky floor boards underneath carpet

I recently had a small wardrobe removed in a spare bedroom. The flooring needs to be put in. I have the existing materials already. I'd also like the skirting done on the sides too The existing flooring is not glued. The floorboards will probably need to be cut to size. I have had someone suggest we take out the last floorboard toward the empty space and replace with the longer newer ones.

I have timber floorboards with several surface scratches. I’m not looking to replace the boards, but would like to know if the scratches can be made less visible through coating, polishing, or patching up.
