Top Computer Repairs related questions

What are some common computer and laptop problems?

Common problems include slow speeds, a dead battery, power supply issues, not turning on, cracked screens, software compatibility issues, and the dreaded blue screen of death. There’s a lot that can go wrong with desktop and laptop computers, especially as your devices age and software updates continuously roll out..

Do you need a computer repair technician or is it okay to DIY?

There are some computer maintenance tasks you can DIY. Things like running virus checks, reinstalling your operating system, and installing new external hardware - like a printer or a mouse. But if it involves messing with your core files or opening up your computer or laptop casing, it’s safest to book affordable computer repairs from an experienced technician..

What kinds of repairs can a computer repairer do?

A computer technician can help with a range of hardware and software repairs, including computer backups, system upgrades, software compatibility fixes, hardware upgrades, data recovery, and cyber security protection..

What are the advantages of getting computer repairs at home vs in a computer repair shop?

It’s awkward and inconvenient to unplug your computer system and head to a computer repair shop. In-home computer repairs can save you time, effort, and often money, because they have lower overheads..

How long does a computer repair service normally take?

Some simple computer repair services (like scanning and removing viruses) take just a few minutes to do. More intensive and complex repairs, like fixing your hard drive or motherboard can take days and even weeks, especially if you’re waiting for new parts to arrive..

What does a computer repair service include?

Computers are complicated devices, so there’s quite a lot that can go wrong with them. The exact process and what you can expect from your computer repair technician will depend on your problem and the fixes they recommend. Here are some common types of computer repair services and inclusions:

General troubleshooting and support

When you don’t have the time, knowledge, or patience to work out what’s wrong with your device, it makes sense to hire a computer repair service near you. Computer troubleshooting and technical support are usually the first step to fixing any problems you’re having. Your technician will ask a few questions over the phone or on your task to assess the complexity of your issue. Then they’ll visit your home or office or provide virtual support to confirm the issue and recommend a suitable solution.

Upgrades and setup

A large number of computer problems are caused by outdated software. When your operating system updates, sometimes it can cause compatibility issues if your other programs don’t update at the same time. Fortunately, this is often an easy fix for an experienced computer technician. They’ll run a check to make sure your software and drivers are up to date, then they’ll download and install any software, computer upgrades, or even a new Windows installation if needed. With up-to-date programs and operating systems, everything should be compatible, run smoothly, and minimise your vulnerability to security threats.

Hardware repairs

Eventually, most computers end up with some kind of hardware failure, whether it’s the graphics driver, a dead battery, or even just a few keys coming loose on your laptop. Arrange computer repair near you to make it easy to drop your computer in, or get a mobile repair technician to your home. A computer hardware specialist will diagnose issues like why your computer isn’t turning on, video display issues, and battery problems. They may run software tests or open up your laptop or computer case to take a look inside. They might also swap spare hardware parts with your existing parts to confirm which parts are causing your problem. Most technicians will be able to diagnose your problem within a few minutes, but it may take a few days or weeks to repair, depending on the complexity or your hardware repair, and whether or not the parts are available locally.

Antivirus and backup

As part of your repair services, your technician may set up antivirus and repair software, especially if they need to restore your files or get rid of malware on your computer. They’ll help backup computer files with cloud software like Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive, or use an external hard drive. And they’ll likely run virus removal software to check for threats and protect your computer against future viruses. Be prepared to purchase extra software or hardware to sort out your antivirus protection and backups. These are important to minimise the risk of future problems and protect your important files, photos, work, and personal details.

Various MAC synchronising / NAS DRIVE set up query

£25

Whitechapel, Greater London, E1

8th Apr 2021

Hello I have various MAC / NAS DRIVE set up problems and have also had ongoing problems with icloud starting to back up (and me not able to stop it) when I didn't need it in the middle of me working leading to slow down my wifi making it impossible to work with zoom meetings at the same time. I also use time machine to back up the mac book pro but think it will only be backing up the files that are locally on mac and not in the cloud? So I bought a NAS drive as I was tired of icloud and wanted to set up a physical on-site back up system (but have not been able to se it up yet) My current mac book pro (Mojave 2014 that I need to upgrade to use new version of keynoteI Recently i bought a new IMAC 2017 (Catalina I think) to replace an old IMAC 2009 and would like to have a seamless set up with all I files I have 1.5 GB have on the macbook pro (too much for the mac book pro hence the need of using icloud) with all 1GB stored on the physical wireless backed up NAS drive and all synchronised between the macbook pro and imac through the sinology nas drive ... but may also need another back up of the NAS drive too to be safe? I have recently also started to use dropbox as I need to collaborate with creative people remotely on same keynote and powerpoint files etc and feel maybe it is the way forward. I have realise that dropbox sharing doesn't allow to work on keynote too . So I am thinking maybe for my the specific clients folders I am collaborating with other members on I need to use icloud? I understand it is maybe a little complex but was wondering how long time you would estimate it could (understand it is not exact estimate) take you / cost me to help setting all this up remotely? Or will you also be able to do on site visit form after next week end of lock down? (I have had first vaccine shot) and can also work with mask on too. Motherboard short circuit repair.

£250

Felling, Tyne and Wear

28th May 2021

Laptop: Alienware 17 R2 [Dell] The Laptop brand new was about £1400, I'm desperately looking to get it fixed but at an affordable price, I'm currently unemployed and in the process of moving house so I can only spare a few hundred at best. Also I need this done asap, because I use my laptop for work purposes. (The Problem) Last week my laptop stopped working and lost all power completely. I tried plugging in my charger but when I did nothing happened. I am fairly sure the problem is a short circuit somewhere in the laptop. This is because I noticed whenever I plugged my charger into the laptop the green light on the adaptor instantly turns off and won't turn on again until its removed from the wall socket and then reconnected. Since then I've tried removing the battery but the laptop still doesn't turn on and still cuts power to the charger when plugged in. Then I tried replacing the charger for a brand new one but it has exactly the same problem. So then I tried replacing the dc power jack in the laptop with & without the battery plugged in but it still has the same problem. I have given the rest of the laptop an inspection but can't see anything wrong. However 2 months ago the laptop itself was dropped heavy on its corner causing obvious damage to the casing on the laptop and smashing a lot of plastic off it, the next day I removed all the bits of loose plastic inside the laptop and it still worked fine up until now. Furthermore for the last year I have experienced some blue screens which forces me to reboot the laptop every time, I think the last one I had it said "Your PC, ran into a problem and needs to restart" "search online for the error: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE". (Don't know if thats got anything to do with the short circuit problem but it might help). Finally my laptop was also recently inspected by a self employed professional and although he couldn't fix it, he is fairly sure the short circuit problem is on the motherboard. Can someone please help me?
