Top Carpentry related questions
The average price of carpentry services on Airtasker is £250, but depending on the service you need, this can easily range from £85 - £250. Read more about how much it costs to hire a carpenter to set the right budget when booking a carpenter in your area.
Carpenters work with wood in all manner of ways. From timber framing for a house or carport to the finishing touches on furniture, carpenters are hired for jobs large and small.
Not all carpenters offer the same services. An experienced cabinet maker may not be the best choice if you want timber framing done, while a decking expert may not have the credentials to refurbish your furniture. It's advisable to choose a Tasker with experience on your specific task.
Yes. While some carpenters have specific areas of expertise, you can employ someone to do a number of small woodworking jobs in one visit. This can be the same job in a number of rooms or different jobs throughout the house. Remember though that some carpentry jobs require more than one day to complete.
Depending on their specialty and level of training, you may find that a carpenter comes under a different name. From specific tasks such as cabinetmaker to more general terms like artisan, joiner or woodworker, there are plenty of variations for carpentry workers.
In the UK, Â carpenters will have normally completed Level 2 or 3 in Joinery and Site Carpentry as their college education. They can also take a T Level course in On Site Construction. Carpenters can also gain on-the-job training or an apprenticeship with a training provider.
For certain types of carpentry tasks, you may need to enquire as to what specialist licenses may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.
A carpenter primarily focuses on working with wood to construct or repair structures such as furniture, framing, doors, and cabinets. They typically specialize in tasks that require woodworking skills, like installing trim or building custom pieces. A builder, on the other hand, oversees and manages the overall construction of buildings or structures, coordinating different trades (including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical) to ensure a project is completed on time and within budget.
Carpenters need to be careful of several safety risks, such as sharp tools, heavy machinery, and working with materials that can splinter or cause injury. They should also be mindful of their posture and body mechanics to avoid repetitive strain or injury, especially when lifting or carrying heavy materials. Additionally, carpenters should follow proper safety protocols when working in environments with dust, fumes, or potential hazards like electrical wiring to minimize health risks and ensure safe work conditions.
Top Joiner related questions
Joinery sets itself apart from carpentry in the way it’s done and in the scale it’s in. While both work on wood installations, carpentry is usually done on-site on a smaller scale and usually on fixtures already. In comparison, joinery is done at a larger scale in a dedicated workshop, typically building bigger home installations like stairs, doors, and door and window frames.
No, especially since joinery is the type of work that is usually done in a workshop rather than on-site. Planers, circular saws, and other machinery are involved in crafting some of these larger-scale installations for your home. Suppose that some joinery can indeed be done on-site. Taskers are experts who are expected to come to work prepared not just with the skills but also the tools needed to get the job done.
This would depend on how much joinery is needed to be made, be it for repairs and minor renovations or a construction project built from the ground up. Regardless, expect a bit of time for local joiners near you to finish your joinery in their workshops and deliver them to your home or site. It is best to discuss timelines with your Taskers to manage expectations.
Typically, yes. However, how long a Tasker will guarantee the work would vary from case to case. For all we know, a Tasker may be confident about the work and give an extended warranty. Regardless, Taskers will work on the projects to the best of their ability to ensure that the finished product would last long. For specific warranty questions, it would be best to discuss this with your Tasker.
Yes, you can, but it comes with certain risks. For one, you would likely be unable to come up with something of similar or better quality than someone who is more qualified and has years of experience to deal with these kinds of jobs. This is where Airtasker comes in by connecting you to different Taskers who can do it for you with high quality and less effort, at a reasonable cost.
There is no correct answer for this as this would depend on the complexity of the work and the amount of joinery that needs to be made, among other things. You can gauge your estimated costs on the Taskers’ initial quotations when you put up a task. However, these costs may be subject to negotiation and change depending on how the project goes.

What does a carpenter do?
Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home, or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring a carpenter can help you with many different tasks. Carpenters take on a wide range of work, such as fixing areas of houses and building furniture from scratch.
Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles, or plasterwork. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking, and window frames all fall into this second category.Â
Decking
Don't know what to do with all that space in your backyard? Hire a carpenter who specialises in building decks. A decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.Â
Cabinet making
Cabinetmakers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focused on fine details. Cabinetmakers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.Â
Refinishing carpentry
While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at the small end. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing, or a similar aspect of your home.
Custom made furniture
A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom-made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables, or a shoe rack, there’s someone nearby who can help.
Joinery
Joinery services encompass the craftsmanship of creating and joining wood in workshops, distinct from on-site carpentry. These services range from bespoke projects to crafting timber buildings, emphasizing precision and passion. Joiners play a crucial role in interior woodwork, window and door production, and specialized construction, offering tailored and quality timber solutions.

Carpenter Wanted to Make 3 Simple Chairs from Plans
£100
Hungershall Park, Kent
9th Jul 2025
We’re looking for a carpenter or maker to help build three chairs based on some attached plans. This is a fun, light-hearted project — the chairs are for casual use around the house or garden, and we’re not being precious about the outcome. We’re imagining a simple build using pine or plywood. They don’t need any fancy finishing — just sanded enough not to be rough to the touch. Raw, honest construction is part of the charm. What we’re looking for: – Source and supply the wood (ply or pine) – Build 3 chairs from the plans – Sand to remove roughness (no paint or finish needed) – Ideally deliver to Tunbridge Wells (or we can arrange collection) We’re open to suggestions or tweaks if they help make the build easier.
What I thought was going to be easy was more complex. But was handled without complaint. Really generous with there time and expertise. All positive.
Demolish wooden shed, put up new resin one
£200
Summerstown, Greater London
24th Jun 2025
Demolish and completely remove from the property a wooden shed. I can then help clean the concrete base and surrounding area before you construct my new shed. It’s a Keter Darwin resin 6x4 tongue and groove easy fast assembly shed with a floor panel. H:205 x W:119 x D:184.5. Combined weight of the panels = 61 kg. I’d also like some old items from the shed taken away such as a couple of hoses, a large garden parasol, etc. Those are the big items, the others don’t weigh much.
Valentin is fantastic. He communicated really well with me before the task, making sure he had all the details he needed to do the job properly. He was on time (despite Friday London traffic!), made an excellent job of demolishing my old shed and putting up a new one. He left everything neat, tidy and clean. He is a friendly and polite professional and I would not hesitate to recommend him. Thanks for your help Valentin

I would like to request a quotation for a small joinery job in my kitchen in NW2, London. The job would include: • Removing the top cabinet door and cutting down the cabinet height by 20 cm; • Adjusting the internal shelf and back panel accordingly; • Cutting and refitting the same cabinet door to match the new height; • Refinishing the cut edges to match the existing wood veneer. Carpenter / Joiner to Make Display Cabinet on Castor Wheels
£250
Castelnau, Greater London
20th Oct 2025
We are looking for an indoor standalone display cabinet made from MDF/pine like in the attached two diagrams. This will be propped up against the office window on the inside. On top will rest a model for display. Underneath, the compartments will be displaying 3x 3D printers (hence the large dimensions). This cabinet should be on 6x heavy duty castor wheels so can be moved around (e.g. to allow for easy vacuum-cleaning underneath). Colour of the cabinet should be white. Looking for a carpenter/joiner who can make this quickly and at a good price. This is for a new property business on a tight budget, so please don't quote silly money - but rather with the expectation that, if successful, this will be the first of many orders.
Liam is a top-class professional. He picked up the task late in the evening, clearly understood the requirements, and delivered a beautifully constructed cabinet within a few days - exactly as promised, on budget, and all with a smile!
