What does a mirror repair service include?
Your mirror repair service includes a general assessment of the issue, recommendations, and a fix (if appropriate). This applies to bathroom mirrors, wardrobe mirrors, and sometimes even car mirrors. Here are some of the most common mirror repairs:
Re-hanging
If your mirror has fallen down from its usual wall, wardrobe, or dresser drawer position, you’ll need to get it re-hung. Your repair person will check the mirror to ensure it’s still in good condition before cleaning the back, as well as the surface for mounting. They’ll remove any adhesive and ensure the surface is dry. Then they’ll re-apply fresh adhesive (using the suitable weight limit) before mounting your mirror back onto the surface. Depending on the surface, they may finish off the edges with silicone to create an even stronger bond.
Mirror crack repair
Your handyman will use a glass repair kit to repair minor cracks and restore your mirror’s finish. They’ll start by cleaning the area with a damp cloth to ensure no dirt or debris. Next, they’ll apply an adhesive stabiliser film to cover the crack. Then they’ll fill a syringe with resin before inserting this into the crack underneath the stabiliser, filling up the crack. Once this has properly set, they’ll remove the film and apply additional resin on top. Once everything has dried again your handyman will gently scrape the surface with a blade to smooth it out, before cleaning away any dust from the resin.
Mirror rot and black edges
Some mirrors are prone to turning black around the edges - especially in moist areas like bathrooms. This happens when protective coatings are worn away and the moisture reacts with the exposed silver nitrate on the back of your mirror. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to clean or fix this issue. But on the plus side, it usually just happens around the edges of the mirror, which means the best fix is to add a frame over the top. Your mirror repair person can help recommend a mirror frame that’s the right width and style for your bathroom, then install it to cover up any black marks.
