This suit is a little too big for my son. Ideally I wanted to tighten the waist of the trousers a little, and take in the jacket as well as shortening the sleeves. I was wondering whether it would be possible to shorten the jacket or not, realistically. I’m not sure if that’s something that can be done.

They are very simple and standard pair of jeans, I don’t need a flat felled machine or anything, a standard top stitch sewing machine will work. I’m not using any rivets so bartacking or stitch reinforcing will suffice.
