It slides onto the axle on the drive side; then the derailleur threads into it. • Check the derailleur: if the cage or body is bent or cracked, replace it (Altus is inexpensive). • Re-route the chain through the jockey wheels, reconnect the cable, then set high/low limit screws and index the gears. A shop can do this in ~30–60 min. • Inspect spokes and cassette for marks and make sure the limit screws are set so it can’t shift into the spokes again (that plastic spoke guard saved you).
