Top Tradesman related questions
The average rate for hiring a tradesman can range from £8 to £60 per hour, depending on their specialisation. Location is also a factor - for example, expect to pay £5 more on hourly rates if you live in London. The cost of getting a tradesman out to help with your task will also depend on the size of the task, whether you are supplying materials, and the complexity of the job. But in general, most tradies cost between £70 - £178 when hired for a task through Airtasker.
When you post a task on Airtasker, you’ll usually get a fixed price quote. Sometimes, after inspecting the problem, your tradesman may recommend additional work and suggest an hourly rate on top of the original quote.
The most common trades in the UK are plumbing, electrical, carpentry, plastering, painting, bricklayering, and building. These trades are in high demand for their specialist skills and ability to help out with everyday, but high-risk tasks around the home.
Most trades require licences, registrations, and insurance to operate in skilled labour work. This ensures they have the right skills and knowledge to work safely and to ensure the quality of their work. A tradesperson working as an electrician should have the necessary qualifications to carry on electrical jobs. It is also recommended to check if the tradesman has public liability insurance or tradesman insurance cover.
The best way to find and confidently hire tradesmen in your area for a particular task is on Airtasker. Provide an accurate description of the task, review your offers, and check the ratings and reviews so you know your tradesman is experienced and will do a great job.
Hiring a tradesman directly gives you more control over the task, who does it, and how it’s completed. Plus, hiring an independent tradesperson can often be more affordable because they have fewer overheads - they can give you a more competitive quote.
You can find a local tradesman by using trusted platforms like Airtasker, checking online tradies' reviews, and asking for recommendations from friends or neighbours. Always look for licensed professionals with verified reviews, a clear quote, and experience relevant to the job you need done.
A handyman typically handles general maintenance and small repairs, such as hanging shelves or fixing taps, while a tradesman (or tradie) is a licensed professional with specific training in a trade like plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or tiling. Tradesmen are required for specialised or regulated work.
Yes, most tradespeople bring their own tools and standard materials needed for the job. However, for larger projects or custom work, they may need to source specific parts or request you to supply materials. It’s best to confirm what’s included when you book.
Absolutely. Many tradies are happy to take on small tasks or one-off jobs, such as patching drywall, fixing a leaking tap, or repairing decking. Platforms like Airtasker are ideal for posting these types of jobs and finding a local tradie quickly.

What does a tradesman do?
Tradesmen (and tradeswomen!) can help you tackle the tasks that need the expertise, tools, and knowledge that only a qualified local tradie can give. Whether you're looking for a builder, craftsman, or someone with experience in skilled labour, you can find a tradie to help with tasks like:
Electrical & plumbing
When you hire tradesmen to work with electricity, gas, or water, they’ll need special qualifications, training, and equipment to keep you and your house safe from fires, flooding, and property damage. You’d need to hire an electrician to install your new light fittings or electrical equipment, like ovens. And you’d need a plumbing tradie to help with plumbing tasks, like fitting new taps and pipes, or gas plumbing tasks like installing or repairing heaters and stoves. Your tradie will start by asking questions about the issues you’re having, then they’ll do a physical inspection of the area to assess the work needed. They’ll use their specialist tools and equipment to repair, install, or replace parts to get everything working properly.
Carpentry & cabinet making
Tradesmen are usually qualified professionals, so they’re ideally suited to tasks that need a higher skill level than a handyman. Carpenters and cabinet makers are in high demand for installing new cabinets, custom-making furniture, and installing built-in robes and cupboards. They’ll measure your space to ensure the furniture and built-ins fit perfectly and match your existing decor. Then they’ll work with a range of equipment and tools (onsite or offsite) to cut and shape the wood, then assemble any parts to create your finished product.
Exteriors
Tradesmen can help provide a professional finish to your exterior building tasks. For example, installing or repairing balustrades. Your professional tradesmen will measure, fit and install glass, metal, or wood balustrades to make your balcony area or stairs safe while matching the design of your home. Once they’ve established a safe work zone, they’ll remove the old balustrades before installing the new parts. Another popular exterior task is installing or upgrading awnings. Your tradie can pull down old, broken, or faded awnings and help you choose a new awning to match your house and surroundings. Using the right tools, they’ll carefully install the new awning so that it is safe and secure.
Concrete repairs & resurfacing
When concrete is damaged, it can create trip hazards, and let in water, dirt and other pests, which can cause further damage. Concrete resurfacing can help repair damage and give your property an instant update with coloured concrete overlays and/or designs. Your tradie will first assess the damage, then repair or replace any broken areas. Then they may clean the existing area with high-pressure hoses or chemicals. Once the area is clean and prepared, they’ll mix up a thin, concrete-based surface compound that will cover the area.

Make drywall fireplace surround and tile over it.
£1,000
Oatlands Park, Surrey
4th Jan 2026
Build fireplace surround, by building a drywall and then tile over it and between the surround and the fireplace opening. Surrounds approx measurements are 110cmx150. We have already bought the tiles - marble mosaic on a mesh 30x30cm. The budget should cover the rest of the materials and labour. The last picture is roughly what is should look like, except the tiles between the surround and fireplace should be flat on the wall (not slanted like on the picture). The surround should be x10cm deep, 15cm wide and then H:110cm x W:150cm, this would leave about 55cm between the surround and the fireplace which should be tiled. + added more pics of similar designs.
