Top Bricklayer related questions
A bricklayer works with building materials, like pavers, blocks, and bricks to create structures and features like garden paths, driveways, retaining walls, and house structures.
Common bricklaying projects include building walls for houses, laying pavers for paths, building retaining walls, creating brick mailboxes, and building fireplaces. Your bricklayer may work on new residential builds, commercial buildings, renovations, and even restoration projects.
Usually, your bricklayer will supply all the tools and equipment needed for the project, but you’ll need to purchase and arrange the bricks (in consultation with your bricklayer to ensure you have the correct amount). It’s best to confirm what’s supplied when you hire your bricklayer and confirm the quote.
Qualified bricklayers have completed a 3-4 year bricklaying apprenticeship, including both onsite hands-on training, and offsite training that includes a Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying Apprenticeship.
It depends on the type of bricklaying job you need done, how much prep work is needed, and how many bricks are involved. On average, a bricklayer can lay 280-500 bricks per day. A small job might be done in a couple of hours, while a larger job (like a house-build with 10,000 bricks) may take several weeks.
The cost of hiring a bricklayer usually sits between $150-$450 for tasks posted on Airtasker. But your bricklayer may charge more or less, depending on factors like the type of job, number of bricks, and how long it’ll take them to finish.
For certain types of tasks, you may need to enquire as to what bricklaying specialist licenses may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.

What does bricklaying include?
Bricklayers employ a range of skills needed to build and repair brick walls and structures. Here are some of the jobs you can ask your bricklayer to help with and what you can expect from each:
Brick walls for homes
One of the most common jobs your bricklayer can help with is building or repairing the brick walls inside and outside of your home. They’ll help you select the right brick to match your home, before laying each brick individually using a guide to ensure a strong, attractive finish. Your bricklayer will use a trowel to spread mortar on the bottom and sides of each brick, and will knock on the brick to remove any air bubbles from the mortar. Then they’ll remove the excess mortar with the trowel.
Paving
Paving is a popular option for driveways, patios, and footpaths because pavers are affordable and easy to maintain (if one breaks, you can easily replace it). Your brick paver will start by preparing the surface. They may need to excavate the area slightly and lay down a level base material like crushed rocks, followed by a mixture of sand and cement. Then they’ll lay your pavers down in the pattern you’ve chosen, before sweeping a mixture of sand and cement into the cracks, then setting them with a hose.
Block retaining walls and fences
Your bricklayer can create brick fences, retaining walls, and even garden edgings for raised garden beds. They’ll use a similar process to building standard brick walls, but they’ll need to choose bricks that can stand up to harsher, more exposed conditions. Once they’ve laid bricks to the correct height, your bricklayer may finish off with a different brick or technique to cap the structure and add interest.
Small bricklaying jobs
Your bricklayer or bricky can also help with other smaller jobs like building custom mailboxes using bricks that match your home. Your mailbox installation will involve laying the bricks using mortar between each layer. Your bricklayer will incorporate a “box” section to collect mail and add your house number. Other small bricklaying jobs include brick fireplace installations and repairs, and even rendering.

Opening size: 840mm wide × 1100mm high Construction: Double brick (cavity) — external face brick is a standard red-brown (photos attached) Scope of works: 1. Remove existing aluminium sliding window, frame, and flyscreen 2. Brick up the opening to match existing external brickwork as closely as possible (double brick / cavity to match the wall) 3. Tie new brickwork into existing courses; ensure level, plumb, and properly bonded 4. Render the internal face to prep for painting (flush with surrounding wall surface) 5. Remove all debris including the old window unit You supply: all materials (bricks, mortar, sand, cement, render, ties), tools, and dump fee. Recycled / second-hand bricks are fine provided the external face is a reasonable colour match. Access: Ground floor, clear access to both internal and external sides of the wall. Photos attached showing internal and external views of the window. Flexible on timing. I do have some matching bricks though these need cleaning/mortar removed. So own supply might be better

Landscape stone fix
$10
Dural NSW 2158, Australia
16th May 2026
We are looking for an experienced handyman/bricklayer to repair our low front garden retaining wall, which is built from sandstone blocks using a traditional dry-stack (no mortar) style. The wall has been damaged, most likely by a vehicle impact. One corner section is completely knocked out, with several large sandstone blocks dislodged, broken, and scattered across the footpath and grass. The task includes: - Clearing all broken and loose stone debris from the footpath, grass, and surrounding area - Rebuilding the damaged corner section using the existing stones, or if not practical, can replace with same color stone (some blocks will need to be carefully repositioned and stabilized) - Ensuring the wall is stable, level, and aligned with the rest of the existing structure, following the original dry-stack (no mortar) construction method - Basic cleanup of the work area once the wall is repaired The wall is approximately 40 cm high, and the damaged section is about 50cm to 90cm long. The stones are heavy, so please bring appropriate tools and equipment. Please provide your quote and confirm your availability to inspect or complete the job. We are located in Dural NSW.
Building a bricked garden bed
$800
Swan View WA 6056, Australia
16th May 2026
Looking for someone experienced in bricklaying/retaining garden beds to build a curved raised garden bed wall in our backyard. We already have: - Approximately 500 recycled bricks onsite - Existing paved area - A rough layout/outline of the shape we want - Some sand onsite for concrete/mortar (may require additional materials depending on your recommendation) - Some larger blocks/bricks to use along the back edge between the bed and retaining wall/fence The main curved front wall will be approximately: - Around 6 bricks high at the highest point - Curved shape (already marked out with bricks) - Roughly 500 bricks total for the front wall We are after someone who can: - Help finalise the shape/levels if needed - Prepare the base properly - Build the wall securely and neatly - Advise what additional materials are required before starting This is for a decorative raised garden bed, not a structural retaining wall. Please provide: - Examples/photos of similar work - Whether you would mortar or dry-stack/reinforce this type of wall - Estimated timeframe - What additional materials/tools you would require. Happy for practical, cost-effective solutions rather than overengineered construction. Thank you.
