Top Lawn Aeration related questions
The best time for lawn aeration depends on factors like the current season and the type of grass you have. Cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, rye, and fescue are best aerated from August to October. Aerate warm-season grasses like Zoysia, Bermuda, and St. Augustine from April to June. Other times to consider lawn aeration is when the thatch layer is more than half an inch, if your lawn was recently constructed, and if it’s had a lot of foot traffic.
Apart from the seasons that affect your grass (usually fall and spring), watch out for several signs that your lawn needs aeration. These signs include thinning grass, discolored patches or areas on your lawn, and puddle formation. Another sign is when a lawn dries up too quickly after rainfall or watering. These signs, especially a quick-drying lawn, tell you that the soil is too compact and needs aeration.
Yes, but lawn aeration may take a lot of time, tools, and patience. While lawn aeration is an easy task for small lawns, aerating a vast, sprawling lawn is a different story! That takes a lot of work and expense—from renting a powered core aerator, going over the entire lawn on the same day, then covering the holes with fertilizer. Hiring a trusted Tasker can save you all this trouble and ensure your lawn is aerated properly.
Your lawn must be clutter-free before the lawn aeration process. If you have any lawn furniture, put these away and store them in your garage or shed for the time being. Clear out your lawn of any fallen leaves, twigs, or other debris. Before booking a local service to aerate your lawn, it’s recommended to mow the lawn.
Lawn aeration with a rolling aerator can take about 30 minutes to 1 hour. Before lawn aeration, your lawn may need watering for one to two days to have the right amount of moisture. The right amount of watering depends on the degree of soil compaction, moisture, and soil quality. As an industry standard, the lawn aeration process must be completed within the same day for best results.
You usually don’t have to provide any tools or equipment when hiring a lawn aeration service in your area. Your hired Taskers should have all the necessary tools and equipment to do the service. However, you can and should provide access to your sprinkler system or garden hose to water your lawn and prep it for aeration.

What do lawn aeration services include?
Lawn aeration services include all the necessary tasks to improve air and water circulation. These tasks can involve removing thatch buildup and loosening compacted soil. Some Taskers can do a partial clean-up or lawn clearing before the actual aeration process. As aeration is part of lawn care, other tasks can include mowing the lawn before aeration and composting afterward.
Lawn assessment
Your hired Tasker can inspect your lawn and determine its moisture levels. Knowing how moist or dry your lawn is can help your Tasker decide if extra watering is necessary. They can also measure the lawn and determine which tools are appropriate for the job. Your Tasker can use a manual aerator for smaller lawns or a powered aerator for large ones.
Lawn preparation
Some Taskers can mow your lawn beforehand, but this can cost extra. If your lawn covers a large area and the grass is seriously overgrown, you may hire a separate lawn mowing service for this preparation step.
Your Tasker can also water your lawn for one to two days when appropriate, depending on the degree of soil compaction. They can water your lawn until it absorbs the equivalent of an inch of rainfall. This process can make the soil moist enough, so it’s easier for the aerator to penetrate and pull out soil plugs. Your Tasker can also place flags to mark irrigation heads or other objects to avoid while using the aerator.
Lawn aeration
When your lawn is ready, your Tasker can proceed with the lawn aeration process. In some cases, the Tasker can take a whole day to work on the entire lawn for the best and consistent results. The specialist may move the aerator following a pattern that covers the whole lawn once. However, it’s not uncommon to go over sparse spots twice. After your Tasker has covered the entire lawn, they will leave the soil cores and move on to the next step.
Fertilizing the lawn
The Tasker may recommend either raking the soil cores and dumping them into a compost pile or leaving them to decompose and supply additional nutrients to your grass. Your Tasker can explain the benefits of either measure, and you can decide what to do from there. After you’ve agreed on the fate of the soil cores, your Tasker can go ahead with fertilizing your lawn. They can apply fertilizer, compost, sand, peat moss, or any combination of these to fill the holes and rejuvenate your lawn. Once your lawn is on track to looking terrific again, you can consider booking other lawn maintenance services on Airtasker!

My lawn needs some after winter TLC! As the title says it needs an experienced gardener to do the above and give it a new lease of life. Pictures show how patchy and full of moss/weeds it is. Please clarify labour and material (including seed etc) in the quote. The garden is approximately 49 metres squared (7x7). Plenty of patio work and other work if you do a good job of this. Please ignore the completely brown muddy patch, that will eventually be covered with patio.
