What do carpenters do?

Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring a carpenter or chippy can help you with many different tasks.

Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles or plaster work. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking and window frames all fall into this second category.

Decking

Many Australian homes are blessed with a large backyard and plenty of sunny hours to enjoy that space. A decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.

Cabinet making

Cabinet makers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focussed on fine details. Cabinet makers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.

Refinishing carpentry

While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at the small end. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing or a similar aspect of your home.

Custom made furniture

A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables or a shoe rack, there’s someone nearby who can help.

Hello, We are looking for a carpenter or handy person to please build and install a custom desk and shelves in our study. We are just after a simple design, no cabinets or drawers necessary. Please see photo of space (circled in red) and other photos for the design/concept we are after. We would like the desk to run the length of the wall (2700mm) and be a depth of approx. 500-600m. Would like 2-3 shelves on either side of the window. This budget includes materials but happy to look into providing the materials ourselves if this helps. Cheers, Annie - Due date: Flexible

Lachlan built a custom designed desk + shelves into our study and did a perfect job. He was able to complete it within a week or so of accepting the task, arrived on time and was very efficient - completing the job in less than a day. His attention to detail was great - all the dimensions were perfect. I organised the materials myself but Lachlan offered to pick them up and provided all the tools + screws needed. Would definitely recommend.
