Top Cat Training related questions

Not for most tricks, as your cat trainer has all the tools and equipment to train your cat. However, cat toilet-training requires that you have a large litter box, flushable kitty litter, plastic bowl and a separate toilet ready. Except for the separate toilet, your cat trainer can procure the other items if you don’t have them, but this can cost extra. You may also provide your cat’s favourite treats to make training for certain tricks easier.

That depends on the trick or behaviour you want your cat to learn. Toilet training can take an average of 3 months. Training your feline as a therapy cat can take about a month or less, depending on how well they respond to other cats and strangers. For the simple cat tricks, these can each take a week or so for your cat to learn.

Yes. If you run a business that offers cat training services, you can definitely hire Taskers to assist you. You can find hundreds of Taskers for different jobs like house sitting, cat sitting, pet grooming, pet door assembly or even furniture assembly to help establish your business. The trick is to make a post on our platform with all the details about your job to let Taskers know what’s expected of them.

These “bad” behaviours are usually instinct-driven or sometimes symptoms of a medical issue. Cats may scratch, spray urine or musk or rub against you not because they want to upset you but because they’re marking their territory. Some cats may make messes out of their boxes due to anxiety, or worse, they may have diabetes or liver or urinary tract issues. Consult your vet if your cat displays any unusual behaviour.

You should take your cat to an animal behaviourist if your cat develops behaviour that can be detrimental to its health and safety, or threatens the health and safety of others. Like humans, cats can have psychological issues which can influence their behaviour. If your cat bites or scratches aggressively, is extremely antisocial towards people and other cats, these can be due to complex issues like anxiety or even depression.

You should hire a cat trainer only to teach tricks like high-fiving or modify simple behaviours, such as training them to kill mice. Cat trainers and animal behaviourists should never be confused with each other. Behaviourists are specialists in animal psychology and can determine whether your cat or other pet has a psychological problem and can help them deal with it. Cat trainers can only teach cats to do tricks, not cure them of issues like depression or anxiety.

What do cat training services include?

Cat training services include the necessary activities to modify your cat’s behaviour or teach them how to do certain tricks. Your cat trainer can train your cats to use a toilet instead of a litter box or teach them how to perform tricks for entertainment. Some cat trainers can socialise young cats or kittens in preparation for becoming therapy cats.

Cat toilet training

One of the most popular behaviours your cat trainer can teach your kitty is cat toilet training. Your cat trainer begins by training them to be accustomed to going into a specific bathroom. They set up your cat’s litter box next to a designated toilet in your home, and gradually raise the litter box to an elevated position until it’s level with the toilet.

Once they are acquainted with the bathroom and associate it with their litter box, your cat trainer securely attaches your cat’s litter box to the toilet seat and over the pan. After a week or so of using the litter box over the toilet, your trainer replaces this with a plastic bowl filled with flushable kitty litter. A small hole is made on the bottom of the plastic bowl to let your kitty’s mess fall into the toilet.

Over a couple of weeks, the hole is gradually widened until your cat is accustomed to using the toilet sans plastic bowl and kitty litter. Some trainers may be able to teach your cat to flush the toilet, but this can cost extra and takes more time.

Teaching cat tricks

Your cat trainer can teach your cat to high-five you, sit or respond to their name when called. These tricks take daily sessions of a few minutes each. Your cat trainer teaches your cat to perform these tricks with the motivation of food and signalling with a clicker. The trainer will work with your cat for as long as necessary until they can do these tricks with you and without needing food or a clicker.

Training therapy cats

Your cat trainer can help train your cat into a therapy cat by getting it accustomed to other people and cats. This is done by socialising them and introducing them to other cats and people. Your cat trainer can use toys and treats to incentivise your cat to look forward to interactions with “new” cats and people. Note that not all cats can be therapy cats and that it’s best to start off a therapy cat’s training while it’s still young.
