Top Cat Grooming related questions

No, you don’t have to provide any of these. Your cat groomer should have a complete cat grooming kit along with their skills, experience and expertise to groom your cat expertly. What you can provide them with are toys, food or their favourite treats which can help keep them calm, and maybe help the groomer gain the trust of your beloved feline - any of these items can help make your groomer’s job easier and your cat more comfortable.

A grooming session usually takes an hour and a half, but may take longer if they have matted clumps of fur to untangle or shave off, and if your cat fidgets during any part of the grooming. Cat groomers may take breaks in between tasks or groom them at a slower pace to let your cat calm down if they fidget, so expect the session to take a little more time than usual if that’s the case.

Absolutely. If you run a cat grooming business or offer mobile cat grooming services, you can hire as many Taskers you need to help. Cat grooming isn’t the only task you can hire a Tasker or Taskers for. You can find hundreds of Taskers for hundreds of different jobs like house cleaning, carpet cleaning (for all that fur) or even a hairdresser for yourself so that you can change up your hairstyle, too. The key is to make a detailed post to get matched with the right Taskers.

Yes, but only if you have the right tools, knowledge and experience. You must know how to groom your particular cat’s breed, as cat grooming isn’t the same for all species. While you may be able to do some of the cat grooming tasks, you may not be able to do all of them right, such as trimming the claws without cutting into the quick. To groom your cat thoroughly, we recommend booking an expert cat groomer on Airtasker.

Not always. Cats should be bathed if they’re hairless, too dirty and have fleas or matted patches of fur. Cats by nature are very clean animals and spend most of their time grooming themselves by licking their fur. By self-licking, cats maintain the oily secretion called sebum at the base of their hairs; this keeps their skin healthy. Licking themselves spreads sebum to protect their coat, removes loose fur, prevents matting and removes dirt and parasites.

You can get a mobile cat grooming service to come to you. Make a post on Airtasker with all the crucial details about your cat grooming needs. Mention your cat’s breed, the grooming they need, your location, your budget and how soon you want the job done. You’ll get matched with Taskers in minutes, and they’ll give you a free quote. They go to your place to groom your cat once you agree on the budget.

What do cat groomers do?

This is a mobile cat grooming service that includes all the tasks necessary to groom your cat. The service can consist of giving your cat a good brushing down to untangle matted fur, trimming their claws, trimming their overgrown fur, bathing them then drying them off.

Brushing and combing

Your cat groomer begins brushing your cat’s fur with a broad, cat grooming brush or cat grooming glove. They brush your cat’s back and flanks, then gradually move to their more sensitive areas like the neck, legs, paws and belly. After the brushing, they use a fine-toothed steel comb.

Your groomer combs your cat to loosen or untangle any matted fur and gently teases out any tangles. If your cat groomer finds any fleas or bumps on your cat while grooming, they may advise you of the presence of fleas or any unusual skin conditions that they notice.

Clipping overgrown fur

As part of long-haired cat grooming, your groomer can trim your cat’s overgrown fur with electric clippers and special scissors. This is only necessary for long-haired cat breeds with hair that has grown unmanageable and makes it uncomfortable for your kitty. Your groomer can trim or shave off matted fur and ensure that the cuts are even to give your cat a neat appearance.

Trimming nails

Next, your groomer trims your kitty’s nails if they are overgrown. They use a special trimming tool to shorten each nail, taking care not to cut too close to the quick (the blood vessel close to the cat’s paw) and cause bleeding. In the unlikely event that one of your cat’s nails is cut too close to the quick, your groomer can apply styptic powder or cornstarch to stop the bleeding.

Bathing your cat

Bathing your cat is considered excessive grooming and is recommended only in some instances like when your cat has become very dirty or if they are elderly cats and don’t groom themselves anymore. Hairless breeds also need to be bathed once a week.

Should your cat need a bath, your groomer begins by gently restraining your cat with a cat harness. Some groomers may hold your cat by the scruff of its neck, but a harness can keep your groomer’s hands-free and make bathing them easier.

Your groomer uses warm water and slowly pours water onto your cat’s body with a non-spray hose; expert groomers never spray on or immerse your cat in water as this causes unnecessary stress and can traumatise your cat. They apply a hypoallergenic cat shampoo all over your feline friend, then gently and thoroughly rinse this off.

Drying your cat

After the bath, your groomer proceeds to dry them. They can use several towels, a hairdryer or both. Your groomer ensures that the hairdryer is on the “low” setting to avoid stressing or traumatising your precious feline. Once their fur is dry, your groomer gently brushes your cat.
