Top Drafting related questions

A draftsman, also known as a drafter, is the technician in charge of creating technical drawings and plans. This includes the specifications of a structure or mechanism. Drafters may work with architects, scientists, or engineers and may also be in charge of assessing structural strength and building costs. Drafters typically use computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) procedures, drafting pencils, and T-squares in order to create these plans.
The primary difference between them: architects can offer both technical and artistic advice to your team, while a draftsman is primarily concerned with the technical aspects of your project. Draftsmen can provide construction-ready drawings, complete with all the technical specifications. Unfortunately, they won’t be able to evaluate your project as a whole or contribute major changes to its design, layout, or flow. If you’re thinking of hiring an architect as well, you can use Airtasker to find an expert near you.
Yes and no. While a draftsman can create the blueprints based on design, an architect must create the design first. A draftsman usually works with or for an architect. Once the architect has visualised the house (including aspects such as the use of space, flow, and engineering), the draftsman converts the design into technical specifications that the construction company can use.
When hiring a draftsman, look for the following: industry knowledge, experience, and communication skills. The first quality includes their technical skills and knowledge of building codes and policies. Their experience can also tell you if they are a good fit for your project. It’s good to ask them if they have handled anything similar to your plans. Lastly, make sure you work with someone who will listen to you, give you sound advice, and help you translate your vision.

What does a draftsman service include?

Airtasker’s draftsman service connects you with a trusted drafter in your area. This draftsman can help you translate your vision into ready for construction blueprints (ideally, with the help of an architect). If you are booking this type of service for the first time, here’s what’s included:

Consultation for drafting services

If you already have a grand vision for your project, a drafter can help you convert it into blueprints that engineers can approve and construction companies can execute. Do take note that their consultancy field is limited; unlike architects, they cannot give a “holistic” vision for your project. The most that they can do is give minor tweaks to your idea and put it down on paper.

It would be best to consult with an architect before approaching a drafter with your plans. Your drafter may also have some architect colleagues to recommend, so you can ask them about this, too.

Creating technical drawings using CAD or traditional drafting

Drafters usually create technical plans or blueprints using computer-aided drafting and design (CADD). They may also use more traditional means, such as papers, pencils, and T-squares. Either way, they provide a very specific and calculated plan that a construction team can readily execute. If you have preferences as to how you want your technical drawings done, you can specify this in your task post.

Working with architects and engineers

The job of a draftsman involves working with architects, engineers, or even scientists. If you have already contacted an engineer and architect, you can hire a draftsman via Airtasker to complete your team. Our platform connects you with available drafters in your area so that you don’t need to look far or wait long before setting an appointment.

Beyond the home: other draftsman services

While a lot of people usually look for drafting services in relation to residential house plans, drafters can actually work with a lot of other industries. They can help you put up a commercial building, design a piece of machinery, help put together consumer goods, and even build rockets. Since their forte is in technical specifications, they are experts in putting things together and repairing them if they fall apart. Replace door lock, change timer on boiler & sort out window draft

£100

Lambeth, Greater London, SE1

18th Oct 2023

I have a bedroom door lock which needs replacing-so you must have an impact. The wood in the door may need to be cut back a bit, so please make sure you have a cutting drill head whether flat wood or spade bit too to make this work. The situation is currently that the latch bolt and deadbolt are not catching onto the strike plate bolt in the door properly, and so the door doesn’t stay closed properly. * Second job is replacing the timer on an Worcester MT10 boiler (the boiler and part are shown in the picture.) * And the final job is to sort out the draft on 3 windows. One of the windows is letting in a slight draft, I intend to arrange a window stripping seal or something similar, but I think you should be knowledgeable about this stuff and any better suggestion you may have I am willing to listen. I work in construction myself so I have an idea of how much to charge for a job that (I’m assuming) shouldn’t take more than an hour, but the price is negotiable I guess as I want to have someone ideally do everything tonight around 6/7pm. I am also happy to add a bonus so that what you will receive does not leave you out of pocket with Airtasker’s fees. Please please no cowboys! Especially regarding changing the boiler timer, you MUST know what you’re doing, PLEASE. Any questions, please feel free to ask. - Due date: Needs to be done on Wednesday, 18 October 2023

Insulate drafty windows, fix doors / windows which will not close well

£255

Peckham, Greater London, SE15

13th Sep 2023

Looking for a reliable handyperson to assist with the following: 1. insulating drafty windows, especially in the lounge but also 3 bedrooms through any/all of the following methods: - adding / replacing window seals - applying window film (you would need to clean the windows prior to application) - filling any holes / gaps around the window frames with expanding foam or other appropriate solution 2. fixing doors / windows which won't close / open properly - my tenants reported the following: Windows and doors: 1. Big windows in living room are drafty/ one does not close properly 2. Back doors to garden don't shut properly. The lock works but it seems that the doors don't fit the frames anymore so can't be fully closed (this is our priority as it's a security issue as well) 3. Bedroom window at the back of the house is drafty (it would be great to still be able to open this instead of sealing shut as it gets very hot in this room in summer.) 4. Door knob on bedroom at the back of the house often comes off the latch, meaning the room is locked and needs to be opened with a card. NOTE: 1) I need a quote that covers assumed materials AND labour, but please tell me what your quote covers / does not cover so that, if the work is different (e.g. if a door mechanism needs replacing which you had not accounted for), we can adjust the price fairly to reflect that 2) you will need to coordinate with my tenants regarding access and exactly which doors / windows require attention because I will be travelling in a different time zone. - Due date: Flexible - Due date: Before Thursday, 21 September 2023

George did a fab job of fixing some drafty windows and some broken door latches and window closures. Very efficient and good about coordinating with my tenants. I wouldn't hesitate to book him again. Very happy!

Looking for a reliable handyperson to assist with the following: 1. insulating drafty windows, especially in the lounge but also 3 bedrooms through any/all of the following methods: - adding / replacing window seals - applying window film (you would need to clean the windows prior to application) - filling any holes / gaps around the window frames with expanding foam or other appropriate solution 2. fixing doors / windows which won't close / open properly - my tenants reported that at least 2 windows are not opening / closing well and one door, but you would need to check with them exactly what is wrong as I do not have pictures / details. Please provide all assumptions for your quote and then, if it turns out that materially more work is required when you inspect the property / speak to the tenants, you should communicate this to me before beginning. I also have another batch of painter/decorator/plumber type jobs (resealing/regrouting/repainting bathrooms) at the same property which I will post separately. Would prefer someone who is able to do all jobs for a good price but am listing separately as I am willing to accept separate tradespeople. - Due date: Flexible
