It was caused by one of the kids sliding into the wall and appears to be plasterboard. I was installing a TV bracket when one of my power circuits started tripping. When the breaker is reset there's an audible "popping" sound, strongly suggesting a drill bit or screw has caught a cable behind the wall. Breaker is currently isolated and labelled off.
