Top Iron Fencing related questions

Yes, this is highly recommended. Setting the posts of an iron fence in concrete gives each of them a solid base. When placed on concrete, the posts of your iron fence are less likely to lean like the Tower of Pisa over time. Even one errant post can lead to many costly problems down the line, as you may have to uproot your entire fence to fix the issue.

On average, it can take two to three days to install an iron fence. That's due to the one to two days needed to let the concrete on each post dry. Another day or two is required for attaching the rails and the gate. Expect the service to take more time if your iron fence spans a large perimeter. You can ask your Tasker for an estimate of how long the job will take.

There are a few ways to maintain your iron fence and extend its lifespan. It's recommended you hire someone to trim unruly vines or plants that wrap around your fence, as these can remove its protective powder coat. Avoid intentionally wetting your iron fence when sprinkling your lawn and move sprinklers away. Sand off any rust spots and cover the sanded area with a coat of paint. You can also hire someone to paint the entire fence.

Only if you have the experience, the right tools and equipment and know exactly how to put up a fence (iron or whatnot) that complies with all your state's regulations, building codes and safety standards. If your installation fails any requirements, it can be more expensive to fix the fence to make it compliant or remove the entire fence and start over.

As long as you have your local council's approval, you don't have to inform your neighbours if you're putting up a fence. Still, it can be a good practice to give your neighbour common courtesy and let them know. If you inform them and don't object to it, you have a defence if they dispute your fence in the future.

In general, fences must not be higher than 1.8 metres. If it's built from masonry, it can't exceed 1.2 metres in height. If it's along the boundary of a primary or secondary road, your fence is limited to a maximum height of 1.2 metres. When planning to put up a fence, check with your state's laws and your council's rules first.

What do iron fencing services include?

Iron fencing service includes all the tasks necessary to do an expert iron fence installation on your property. This service can handle common types of iron fence installations, such as rod iron fence installation and wrought iron fence installation. Your hired iron fence installer can take measurements, mark off spots for post placement, dig the needed holes, install the posts, rails and gate.

Taking measurements

Before your hired wrought iron fence contractors install your fence, prepare the necessary permits. Some Taskers can procure these for you upon request. Once the permits are ready and you have your council's approval, your Tasker takes measurements. They can mark the exact spots for post-placement and help you choose the right location for gate placement as well.

Note that the site must be clear of any obstructions or debris. However, you may want to consider hiring another expert to clear these before work begins. After you've approved their plan for each post and the gate position, they can go to the next step.

Preparing tools and materials

If you don't have the iron fence yet, some Taskers can buy it for you upon request. They can make sure to have all the appropriate tools for the job and get the needed materials. Should there be any excess materials left over after the project, your Tasker can turn these over to you.

Digging holes for posts

With all the materials and tools ready, your Tasker starts digging the holes. They can dig as many holes as needed for all the posts and make sure they are deep enough and uniform, so the posts are level.

Installing posts

After each hole is dug, your Tasker places a post. They can attach a plumb line to ensure that all the posts are level and of the correct height once they're in their holes. Your Tasker can make the necessary adjustments if they aren't level.

Your Tasker can fill each hole ¾ of its depth with concrete to stabilise each post. Depending on the weather and how it affects the concrete mixture, this can dry after a day or two.

Attaching rails

After the concrete is dry and the posts are firmly in place, your Tasker attaches the rails to each post. Depending on the iron fence design, they can connect the rails with brackets or do spot welding. Your Tasker can make sure the rails are of the right length and cut them to size if necessary. They can also ensure that the rails have a consistent level of ground clearance.

Installing the gate

Your Tasker can install the gate, and if the iron fence has a drop-down bolt, they can bore a hole on the ground and attach the drop-down bolt gate. With your fence finished, why not hire someone to help you get the most out of your lawn?

Replace wooden rails supporting a corrugated iron boundary fence

$400

Golden Point VIC 3350, Australia

14th Dec 2023

The fence section is about 15 metres. The wooden rails on the other side have rotted but the seven steel supports in the ground are still strong and the iron sheets can be reused. Bolts should be replaced and there could be as many as 280 involved. Plants on that side will be cleared before work starts. The section of fence runs from the side of a shed to the back of a house and a newer fence. The steel posts are about 2.6 metres apart. About 15 metres of wood is needed for the length of iron involved - the wood that is there now has rotted. Work could be done in early January instead but preference given to earlier. Also happy to discuss costings if you can tell me what the wood (treated pine) would cost, and how much labour is involved. - Due date: Before Friday, 22 December 2023
