Several factors could affect one's reading comprehension. These include difficulty processing language due to a congenital condition or developmental differences, dyslexia, or an attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). If your child is having problems with word recognition, fluency, or understanding what they just read, it may be best to consult with a teacher, counsellor, or psychologist.
Experts recommend asking them to read aloud, reread materials, and talk about what they're reading. It's important to provide books at the right education level. If you'd like to help your child with their studies, consider hiring someone to clean the house or do the grocery shopping for you. Not only do you save on time and energy - you get to spend them on what your child needs most.
A good tutor should be patient and open to change while still having a great amount of self-discipline. Since most children need a tutor because they require a different approach instead of a classroom setting, it's up to the tutor to adapt to the student's needs (while still sticking to a schedule or lesson plan). Next, tutors must be good communicators, both verbally and visually. Lastly, tutors need to be empathetic and receptive of their students’ needs.
This would depend on your child’s needs as well as the reading tutor you hire. If it’s your first time hiring a tutor, one hour per week is a good place to start. Your Tasker may also have some recommendations later on, depending on your child’s progress and needs. Of course, you would also want to ask your child if they think they’d like longer or shorter sessions with their private reading tutor.
This may depend on the reading tutor you’ll hire. While it’s not generally recommended to have a child spend so much screen time, online reading tutors are a great option for busy parents who don’t want to supervise a tutor in their kitchen for an hour every week. Plus, the Tasker may charge less since there is no transportation involved. If you’d like to hire an online-based reading tutor, simply indicate this in your task post.

What do a reading tutor’s services include?
A reading tutor's services cover activities that help school-age children in their reading and writing. They can conduct lessons at the student's home or via online sessions. Parents must note that while a tutor should frequently use positive reinforcement, they shouldn't mislead the student about their performance quality.
And while a tutor can go over lessons that a student needs help in, a private tutor must still have a lesson plan and schedule that will help the student succeed in the classroom - and even enjoy reading in their leisure. In general, these are what an English reading and writing tutor may cover:
Primary reading tutoring: Paired reading
During the paired reading, your hired tutor will select reading materials. The student starts reading the material out loud, with the tutor adjusting to their speed. For easy materials, the student may prefer to read by themselves and signal their tutor that they want to cover the material independently. For difficult materials, the student may require the assistance of the reading tutor. After this, the tutor gives feedback on pronunciation and punctuation.
Then, they may move on to the next material or the next activity. The goal is to have the student do more solo reading and take on more challenging (but not too advanced) materials.
Vocabulary lessons
Next, the reading tutor and the student take the material(s) that they read. They'll list all the words that the student isn't familiar with. Together, the reading tutor and student sound out the word and go over its meaning. The student might learn some synonyms or antonyms and how to use the word in a sentence.
Reading comprehension tutoring
If the student struggles with reading comprehension, the tutor may ask questions like, "What did you like best about what you just read?" or "Have you ever read, heard, or experienced anything like this?". This may be followed by deeper questions, including, "Why do you think this happened?".
The tutor then gives follow-up questions to help the student reflect on the piece. If necessary, the reading comprehension tutor may ask the student to reread a sentence or paragraph. By the end of this activity, the student should have a clear understanding of what they read.
English reading and writing
Your hired tutor may assign a writing task that builds on reading comprehension, or create a standalone task. For example, they can ask the student to write a sentence or paragraph about what they read. Students can also pretend to write to the author or a character in the story, asking questions or offering advice.
Standalone tasks may involve writing about their day at school or their pet. Your hired tutor guides the student in planning the composition and writing a draft. They'll then provide feedback on the structure, subject-verb agreement, grammar, and spelling.
