Why hire local dog walkers through Airtasker?

Top Dog Walking related questions

According to experts, dogs should get two 15-minute walks per day, though some breeds are okay with once a day walks, while some require much more physical activity. Find what makes your dog happy, but avoid overexercising them. If you can only give time for a couple of walks a week or are physically unable to walk them (e.g. due to injuries), you can book a dog walking specialist via Airtasker.

Professional dog walkers don’t need to have a licence in countries like the UK. This means that anyone can start a dog walking business. If you’d like to do a credentials check on your potential dog walker or Tasker, check their customer ratings, ask for references, conduct an interview, and ask them for a meet-and-greet so that the real client - your pet can judge them!

Ask your dog walking specialist how long they’ve been doing their job, and if they have a contract or service agreement. Inquire if they can provide a free meet-and-greet or consultation with your pet, to see if they can get along. Next, ask about insurance coverage, and their policies for bad weather, key-keeping, scheduling, and cancellation. Ask how many dogs they handle on one walk, what supplies they carry, and how they’ve handled emergencies.

First, make sure your dog follows the walker’s policies such as vaccination, deworming, and spaying/neutering. Next, provide supplies: an appropriate leash, collar and harness, waste bags, maybe even a doggie water bottle. Next, make sure your dog knows basic commands such as “Sit” and “Stay”, and can follow these rules on the road, especially at crosswalks and street corners. Finally, prepare the keys to your house and make sure they’re easy to use while handling your dog.

You can easily find a dog walker near you here on Airtasker! To start, tap “Post a task” and indicate all the details of the job such as the type of dog/s you have, your location, budget, etc. Then, tap “Get quotes” and wait for offers from dog walking services near you. Once they arrive, sift through the offers until you find one that fits your needs. Tap to confirm your appointment, and you’re all set!

Yes, they can, but they must take extra care when walking dogs using bridleways. If you’re from England or Wales, follow the Countryside Code and make sure your dog doesn’t run through crops, frighten livestock, disturb undergrowth, or be at risk from passing vehicles. To be on the safe side, tell your dog walker to keep your dog on the leash and clean up their mess to avoid any untoward situations with farm owners.

What does dog walking include?

Whether you need regular, casual, or group dog walking, you can find a dog walker who will love exercising your dog. Each dog walker will have their own unique approach, but here are some common dog walking inclusions:

Regular dog walking

A regular dog walker will come as often as you need to supplement your dog’s walking needs when you’re unavailable to walk them yourself. Most dogs need walking for 30-60 minutes once or twice a day, while some will benefit from a walk just a couple of times a week. Before you book in, your dog walker will ask questions to determine the best schedule for your dog’s needs and suggest suitable times and days they’re available to exercise your dog. When they arrive for a session, they’ll bring along dog waste bags, treats, and put your dog on a leash. During the walk, they’ll keep a lookout for unusual behaviour and alert you and/or the vet if needed. They’ll also pick up after your dog. Finally, your dog walker will return your dog back home with fresh food and water at the end of the walk.

Casual dog walking

A casual dog walker will help with occasional dog walking when life gets a little too busy, or you have other commitments on. Your dog walker will arrive at your home, walk and play with your dog, pick up after them, and look after his/her health and wellbeing. Once the session is over, they’ll return your dog home to rest and relax. Your casual dog walking will normally include 30-60 minutes of time with your dog while they walk and play.

Group dog walking

If your dog is well-socialised, your dog walker may offer group dog walking. This can often be more affordable since your dog walker is providing services to multiple clients at once. Or maybe you have more than one dog that needs exercising, or your dog walker likes to bring their own pets along for the walk, too. Either way, group dog walking will give your dog the chance to socialise while out on their walk. Your dog walker will have special dog harnesses for walking, and ensure they choose dogs who are compatible with one another for a safe and enjoyable stroll.

Feeding your dog

Most dog walkers will offer your dog food and water at your home, once the exercise is over. To make sure they provide your dog with suitable care, they’ll ask questions about your dog’s regular meal schedule, whether they take treats, any health concerns or medications, and any dietary restrictions.

Pet sitting

Many dog walkers also offer dog sitting for long-term pet care when you’re travelling or need a companion for your dog while you’re at work. Pet sitting usually takes place in the comfort of your own home, although your pet sitter may also offer their own home. While pet sitting in your own home offers your dog a more familiar environment, at least your dog will feel comfortable with your regular dog sitter taking care of them.
