Intervals for car servicing are set out in your vehicle’s service manual. Depending on your make and model, servicing is usually required every 10-15,000km or 6 months. If you don’t travel far, you’ll need your car checked annually.

Mobile mechanics are the most convenient way to get your car serviced because they come to you. And without the expense of workshop overheads, you’ll often pay less. The main downside is that on rare occasions, your mobile mechanic may be unable to perform some less common services due to limited supplies and equipment at hand.

A mobile mechanic can complete almost all the same mechanical repairs and maintenance jobs you’d get from a mechanic shop. They can do anything from simple oil changes, through to log book servicing and roadworthy certificates. As long as they have the parts on hand and can do the work from a flat surface, they should be able to get the job done.

By requesting a mechanic near you on Airtasker, you’ll receive plenty of offers from qualified mechanics within minutes. This makes it easy to find the cheapest car mechanic near you that fits your budget.

The best way to find a skilled and reliable mechanic near you is to post your task on Airtasker. Outline what your car service or repair needs are, and you’ll start to hear from rated and reviewed mechanics near you within minutes.

A mobile mechanic comes to your home or workplace, so there’s no need to drop your car off or arrange a lift. They’re a good fit for routine servicing, oil changes, battery replacements, brake work and most diagnostics, meaning anything that can be done on a flat surface with the tools in their van. A mechanic shop has hoists and specialist equipment, so it’s usually the better choice for heavy jobs like gearbox or major engine repairs. Not sure which you need? Describe the problem when you post your task, and mechanics can let you know in their offers whether they can do it on site.

It’s possible, depending on who’s available near you and whether the parts are easy to get. Post your task with today as the due date and include your car’s make, model and year, plus what’s wrong, so mechanics can check they have the right parts before they make an offer. Jobs like battery replacements, brake pads or car diagnostics are more likely to be sorted on the day than repairs that need parts ordered in. If your car won’t start or isn’t safe to drive, say so in your task, because a mobile mechanic can come to you.

A typical mechanic job on Airtasker costs between $120 and $250, with a median of $175, based on completed Airtasker bookings in Australia over the past quarter (April–June 2026). These are settled prices — what customers actually paid once the job was done, not just the asking price. Jobs usually close above the price first posted (a median of $150), so if you’re after a cheap mechanic near you, budget a little above your opening offer.

What you’ll pay depends on the job, your vehicle, and whether parts are supplied. Many mechanics quote by the hour, often around $90–$160 an hour for mobile work, plus parts and sometimes a call-out fee. So compare the total for the job, not just the hourly rate, and check whether parts are included when you compare offers.

What does a mechanic service usually include?

Whether they come to you or work from a mechanic shop, good mechanics near you are skilled in nearly all aspects of keeping your car maintained, serviced, and repaired, so it’s roadworthy and efficient to run. The exact process during your service will depend on how your mechanic prefers to work and the type of tasks they’re doing, like:

Minor service

This is the most basic engine service a mechanic provides, but it can make a huge difference in whether or not your car can operate efficiently. A minor service usually alternates with a major service, at around the 6-month mark. A mobile mechanic near you can do minor services because your mechanic only needs a flat surface to get the job done. They’ll unscrew the sump plug, allowing old oil to drain from your car. Then they’ll remove the old oil filter and replace with a new one that’s the right size for your vehicle. Your mechanic will dispose of your old filter and oil. They’ll also inspect other key components, like your battery, lights, air filters, and other fluids.

Log book servicing / major service

A major service or log book service involves a series of steps in line with your vehicle manufacturer’s service manual. It’ll include a combination of major and minor services, depending on the age of your car, or how many kilometres it’s travelled. Your service may include testing your lights, brakes, and battery. Then checking fluid levels, windscreen wipers, windows, mirrors, steering, suspension, radiator, fan belts, and tyre pressure. Finally, it may also include maintaining/replacing oil filters, hoses, belts, tyres, and wheel alignment. Your mechanic will finish off by stamping your logbook to record the services completed, which can help maintain your car’s resale value.

Roadworthy certificate or pink slip

A roadworthy certificate or pink slip is a specific vehicle check that’s conducted to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition and can be operated safely. In some states, it’s required when selling a car or may be required each year to confirm your vehicle is safe for registration purposes. A mechanic will check off a list of predetermined items to verify that your car meets a minimum safety standard set out by your state government. They’ll focus on safety, checking things like tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, rust or damage, seatbelts, windows, lights, and your windscreen.

Major and minor repairs

Sometimes your car might need a little extra attention if you’ve had an accident, broken down, or your drive feels a bit different to normal. A car mechanic can perform minor and major repairs on most vehicles, so if you need a car fixed near you, this is where most jobs fall. They’ll use diagnostic equipment to locate the issue and decide on a course of action to get your car back on the road. If they don’t have the necessary spare parts, they may need to order them to finish off your repair and replace any faulty parts. Note that a mechanic service is usually limited to your car’s engine and electrics. It’s best to speak to a panel beater if you also have external body damage.

Fit External Universal Fuel Pump to 1980 Honda Accord

$180

Moorooka QLD 4105, Australia

25th Sep 2026

Hi, I need a qualified mobile mechanic or auto electrician to replace a leaky external fuel pump on my 1980 Honda Accord (carburetted). The original factory frame-mounted pump under the car is weeping fuel, so I am converting it to a universal, low-pressure inline pump setup. I have already purchased the conversion parts—you just need to bring your tools, standard wiring consumables, and expertise. What I have ready for you: -New PAT EFP-085 (Pierburg) universal low-pressure external fuel pump kit. Premium 8mm ID (SAE J30R9) fuel injection hose. Two (2) brass step-down hose adapters (1/4" to 5/16") to bridge the pump to the car's factory 6mm lines. Four (4) matching metal fuel hose clamps. What you will need to do/bring: Safely drain/pinch lines, unbolt the old leaky external pump from the chassis rail, and mount the new universal pump using its rubber-insulated bracket. Plumb the new pump into the factory lines using the supplied 8mm hose, brass adapters, and clamps. Snip the original factory plug, strip the power/ground wires, and crimp on two small ring/eyelet terminals (please bring these with you) to secure them to the new pump's threaded terminal studs. Heat-shrink the connections to seal them from road grime. Cycle the ignition to prime the carburetor and check thoroughly for leaks under pressure.

Mobile Mechanic/Car-Savvy Person Needed – Hyundai i30 2010

$50

Coorparoo QLD 4151, Australia

18th Sep 2026

Hi! I’m looking for a mechanic or someone experienced with cars who would be willing to come to my home in Coorparoo and have a look at my 2010 Hyundai i30 CRDi diesel automatic. The car has 286,609 km and was a reliable car for me for years, but it’s currently not running and the rego expired in July 2026. It previously had an oil leak which ended up getting oil into the starter motor. The starter motor has since been replaced, and I have also put in a brand-new Century battery from Supercheap Auto (receipt available), but the car is still not starting/getting power. At this stage I really just need someone knowledgeable to have a look and give me an idea of what the problem might be, whether it could potentially be a reasonably simple/affordable repair, and whether the car is worth spending any more money on or if I should just sell it as-is. I’m a single mum with two young daughters and really need to finally sort out my car for us, as Ubers are just far too expensive. I unfortunately don’t have a big budget to keep replacing parts without knowing what’s actually wrong with it. Offering around $50 for someone to come out, have a look and give me their opinion/advice. I’m not expecting repairs to be included for cheap price I’m requesting — just an initial assessment. If it turns out to be something straightforward, we can discuss the cost of repairing it separately. Would especially appreciate someone familiar with Hyundai i30 CRDi diesels/electrical starting issues. 📍 Chatsworth Road, Coorparoo QLD

Mobile mechanic required to fix coolant leak

$100

Greenslopes QLD, Australia

6th Apr 2026

I require a mobile mechanic to help me with my Volkswagen Amarok Ute which has a coolant leak. I’m unsure where exactly the leak is coming from but hope that it is a simple enough fix. Car is currently parked at Greenslopes and given the amount of coolant it is leaking, it has not been moved since the leak was discovered.

Ashton was very knowledgeable and took the time to assess the issues I was having with my Ute, while also explaining the process and keeping me informed. I would recommend him if you need any assistance with a motor vehicle.
