I've had a gas plumber half fix my gas heater. He removed the burner switch because he said it wasn't working and i didnt really need it. However once i'd turn the gas control all the way off instead of just being left on pilot, i'm no longer able to get the ignition switch to get the pilot flame on again. So it may need a new ignition switch as well as a burner switch.
