Top Plasterer related questions

The US doesn’t have a national plastering license, so licensing requirements are determined at the state or local level. In most cases, you likely won’t need one for minor repairs. However, for bigger jobs, it’s advisable to hire a licensed contractor to make sure they’re compliant with building codes and have insurance. You can find contractor licensing information through your state’s licensing board website.

The average cost of plastering services can run anywhere from $200 to $1,200, but the final rate depends on your location, the type of plaster you require and the area of the house to work on, among other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for a detailed quote from your Tasker.

It could take one to three days, depending on the number of areas that you need to have plastered. For a more precise estimate, consult your Tasker.

Plaster usually dries after two to three days on the first application, then another seven days for the final coat.

Yes, lime plaster is an excellent choice to consider. It’s an environmentally friendly material that helps to regulate humidity and reduce the risk of mold, making it ideal for homes in varied climates. And of course, it works well with both contemporary and traditional designs, which is a great plus.

Gypsum plaster is a widely used material for interior wall and ceiling finishes. Other common choices are cement plaster and clay plaster. A more modern and affordable option is synthetic plaster made of plastic. Each type of plaster has its own unique properties, so it’s best to consult your Tasker for the best material for your purpose.

The difference between plastering and skimming is that plastering refers to the application of multiple coats of plaster to a wall or ceiling, often including a base coat and a top coat.

Skimming, on the other hand, is the application of a thin, final coat of plaster (or a specialized skimming compound) to create a smooth, even surface ready for decorating. Essentially, skimming is the final stage of the plastering process.

A good plasterer on Airtasker will have positive reviews and ratings from previous clients, showcasing their skill and reliability. Look for plasterers with experience in the specific type of plastering you need, evident in their profile and portfolio, and don’t hesitate to ask for references or examples of their work before hiring. Clear communication and upfront pricing are also hallmarks of a trusted plasterer.

To complete your home maintenance checklist, you might also need painters to finish the walls, electricians for any rewiring, or carpenters if you're adding or changing any woodwork.  Find all these trades and more on Airtasker to coordinate your project seamlessly.

Top Wall Plastering related questions

There is no quick answer for this, as there are several types of plaster. The “best” plaster is one that offers you the best combination of durability, safety for your household members, aesthetic appeal and cost. Gypsum plaster is the least expensive option but isn’t very sturdy. Lime plaster is non-toxic, can regulate humidity in a space, is durable and natural but takes longer to apply and can cost more; spare yourself the hassle by hiring a Tasker!

That depends on the type of plaster, the complexity and scale of the job, and in some cases, the weather conditions. These can all impact how long the job takes. Some plasters need 1 to 2 layers, while others need 7 to 8 layers to complete. Note that each layer needs anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to dry before adding succeeding layers to finish. You can ask your Tasker for an exact estimate.

Most plasterers recommend that the plaster stops about an inch before reaching the floor. This is assuming your floor has no baseboards. There should be some allowance because if the plaster extends to the floor, this can dry the fastest and create unsightly trowel marks that won’t match the color of the rest of the wall.

Plaster is the better choice, although it can take longer and cost more than drywall. Drywall isn’t as sturdy as plaster, and plaster has better qualities. Plaster can last longer as it is waterproof, doesn’t allow mold growth and some types of plaster are safe for people with allergies. Plaster can also make rooms and spaces look more aesthetically pleasing and thus add value to your home.

You can have the wiring installed before having your walls or ceilings plastered. Your electrician may do some rough work installing the wiring, switches and switch plates. The plasterer can mark these off and cover them with plastic, do the plastering then your electrician can come back to finish. If you have the plastering done first, your electrician will have to score plaster to fit wires, outlets and switches; then, your plasterer will have to do a lot of patch-up work.

It would help if you had the plumbing done before plastering - even before the wiring. Remember that it’s easier to bend wires or cables, but it’s more difficult to bend pipes! Your plumber must also test the water pressure and check for leaks. Doing the plumbing after the plastering means breaking plaster to access or mount pipes, and this can mean twice the work and cost of plastering.

Top Ceiling Plastering related questions

Yes! Just be specific when booking a Tasker to get your decorative plaster ceiling repaired or restored. Don’t forget that you can connect to many different ceiling plastering experts out there. You can also call on professionals who specialize in textured plaster ceiling repair, falling plaster ceiling repair or even repair small holes in plaster ceilings. Note that depending on the extent and nature of the damage, you may have to hire another expert to help in repairs.

It takes around 4 hours on average to plaster one standard-sized ceiling. In most cases, it shouldn’t take more than a day to plaster your ceiling, and that can include the time needed for site and materials preparation. It’s rare for ceiling plastering to take longer, although this may happen if there’s too much humidity and causes the plaster to take more time to dry.

For best results, wait at least a week for your newly plastered ceiling to dry before painting. While your plastered ceiling may look and feel dry to the touch after a couple of days, it may not have completely cured. If still wet, the deeper plaster layers can absorb moisture from paint and cause it to peel off. Don’t risk painting your ceiling plaster too soon and hire an expert to do it.

Yes, you can! Though you may want to wait for a day before moving in. The room can have a lot of condensation and feel damp, and it may not be the most comfortable area to sleep in. The good news is that most plasters are non-toxic, so while the area may feel damp, you don’t have to worry about inhaling any harmful fumes and developing an allergic or adverse reaction.

Maintaining your plastered ceiling involves regularly cleaning and washing off stains. You can use a vacuum with a brush attachment to loosen and remove dust and dirt. Apply diluted hydrogen peroxide or bleach on stains, then wipe off with a soft cloth. Another helpful measure is never to smoke indoors. Tobacco smoke can waft up and stick to your ceilings and leave unsightly stains.

Yes, but only if you have the right tools, equipment, skills and experience. To simplify the work and use less plaster, make sure you have a drywall ceiling. Plastering a ceiling like this can take at most a day, but doing so requires a good eye and skilled hands to mix plaster to the right consistency and apply it evenly. Should you want a more complex plaster applied to your ceiling, it’s best to hire an expert on our platform instead.

What do plasterer services include?

If you want expertly handled plastering, opt to hire via Airtasker. By posting a task on the platform, you can match with tradespeople who are well-equipped to enhance the aesthetic value, longevity, and durability of your walls or ceilings. Plastering is important if you seek to prime your home for remodeling or elevate your living space with decorative features.

Here are some plastering services you can get via Airtasker:

Ceiling plastering

If you aim to have ceiling plastering, you will need a highly skilled tradesperson on the job. The task usually requires great precision due to the overhead work. Plasterers start by priming the ceiling surface and clearing the surrounding area. While some Taskers can move or cover furniture, you may need a separate service to vacate the space. Plasterers then apply a base coat of plaster and follow up with a finishing coat once the base has set. Special care is taken to ensure a smooth surface rid of sagging or dripping.

Wall plastering

For those looking to start wallpapering or repainting, consider hiring a plasterer to work on your interior walls. The process is similar to ceiling plastering, though wall plastering enables plasterers to have easier access and movement due to the vertical surface. Specialists first remove dust or debris from the wall, then apply two coats of plaster for complete and even coverage. Wall plastering can involve drywall plastering or applying plasterboard for added protection against noise and humidity.

Plaster repair

Your Tasker would typically suggest getting other specialists to repair any underlying issues near or around the plaster before they start the actual plaster repair job. Once issues like leaks and damaged pipes are resolved, plasterers inspect the site themselves to assess the extent of the damage. They then prepare the appropriate amount and type of plaster needed for the repairs, matching it as closely as possible to the existing plaster in terms of texture and appearance. After completing the repairs, hire a painter to apply a fresh coat of paint to restore the plaster and ensure a seamless finish.

Plaster coving

Want to add some pizazz to your otherwise dull room? Or perhaps you need assistance hiding noticeable imperfections? If so, consider plaster coving. This involves plasterers installing decorative molding at the junction between walls and ceilings. Plaster is a preferred material because of its adaptability, but if you prefer cheaper alternatives, you can also explore plastic options. During a coving service, plasterers measure and cut the coving to fit, and install it with adhesives.

Lime plastering

Lime plastering is an excellent choice for those looking to adopt environmentally friendly methods. This traditional technique uses a mixture of lime, water, and sand, which is known for its natural antiseptic properties and ability to regulate humidity. Lime plaster creates a breathable wall finish and a durable surface that can last for centuries, making it ideal for spaces prone to dampness and for preserving older structures.

Securely Mount 2 Surfboard Racks + Small Drywall Touch-Up

$120

Los Angeles CA 90035, USA

Jun 16th 2026

Looking for an experienced handyperson to securely mount two surfboard wall racks in my apartment and touch up a few small drywall holes. I attempted to DIY the mounting but had trouble locating the studs. I need a professional who can properly locate them, or use heavy-duty anchors if the layout dictates, to ensure the final setup is rock-solid and safe. Along with mounting the racks, the job includes fixing a few small holes from my previous attempt. I tried to patch them myself, but they need a professional eye to either re-patch or touch them up so the wall looks seamless again. I will provide the two surfboard wall racks and their standard mounting hardware (the boards going on them are 8ft and 9ft long), and you will have access to a power drill, drill bits, and a step ladder. The workspace will be completely cleared and ready for you. You will just need to bring a level and a reliable stud finder. Please also bring heavy-duty wall anchors, just in case we need them as a backup for placement, and a small amount of spackle or patching compound to properly finish the wall touch-ups. Please let me know your experience with wall-mounting heavy items and basic wall patching when you make your offer. Looking to get this done as soon as possible!
