Top Plaster Coving related questions

Your plaster coving can be completed in as little as a day if it’s a simple job and applied to a moderately-sized room. This can take as long as a week if you want plaster coving in several large rooms and the walls and ceilings have dips or cracks that need to be fixed. You can ask your Tasker for a more exact estimate.

The answer depends on your preference, budget and, in some cases, safety needs. Polystyrene coving is lighter than plaster and requires more skill and diligence to install to avoid damage, although it costs less than plaster coving. Some polystyrene coving types are highly flammable and emit toxic fumes in a fire, so consider that potential safety issue. Plaster coving is easier to handle but can become cracked over time and will require repairs. An experienced coving fitter can help you decide.

Covings are a decorative touch that can make your rooms less spartan and unfinished in appearance. Coving or cornices, whether made of plaster, wood, paper-covered gypsum, or other material, can add an elegant finish to an otherwise bare space. As they can come in various designs, they can enhance your home’s interior design and add a unique character to almost any room in your home.

Yes, but only if you have the necessary skills, tools and experience to cut and install them. If you plan to do this yourself, you can choose plaster coving in simple designs that are easier to install. Should you want to install plaster coving that is of a more complex design, consider hiring an experienced tradesperson; they have the tools and years of experience to install covings quickly and in the right way.

Plaster covings can help your spaces achieve contemporary looks or period styles. For modern interior design, plaster coving can give rooms the appearance of seamlessness between the walls and ceilings if painted the same colour as the ceiling. More intricate plaster coving with designs carved into them can complete Victorian-era looks or Renaissance style when used with the proper elements like period-accurate drapes, lighting fixtures and furniture. Need more ideas? You may hire an interior designer on our platform as well.

Consider putting plaster coving as a decorative element to embellish your rooms, but did you know plaster coving has a practical use? Plaster coving can hide imperfections in the joints between your walls and ceilings! Plaster coving can be a quick and relatively easy solution to hide cracks whilst giving a facelift to dull-looking rooms or spaces in your home. To find out how to use plaster coving efficiently, you can consult a designer.

What do plaster coving services include?

Plaster coving services include all the activities necessary to install decorative touches that are plaster coving, right on the areas where your walls and ceilings meet. This can consist of assessing and preparing the site, cutting the plaster coving to fit, fitting coving with adhesives, leaving the adhesive to dry, and finishing touches.

Site assessment

Any hired coving fitters can begin the service by taking all the necessary measurements. They can take note of the shape of your room - especially if it isn’t a standard rectangle or square. Your Tasker can cut the coving plaster to fit any internal and external corners.

Do note that before your coving installers get to work, you may want to make sure that the walls or ceilings have no leaky pipes.

Site preparation

With the measurements they took, your Tasker can make pencil lines or use other techniques to determine where the coving installation can go on your wall and ceiling and ensure that the coving is perfectly level when installed. They can do this on every side of the room and in as many rooms as required.

Your Tasker can check the areas are free of dust, grease, or debris and clean the spaces if necessary. Note that you may want to hire someone to install the wiring before your Tasker proceeds to glue the coving.

Should your walls or ceilings have any bumps or dips, some Taskers can fix these flaws upon request. However, if the imperfections on your walls or ceilings are in large areas or are too complex for your Tasker to resolve, you may have to hire someone to fix these flaws. If the walls and ceilings are levels, your Tasker can score the area, so the coving adhesive has a better grip. Your Tasker can seal the floor with plastic or protective covering if necessary.

Installing the coving

Your Tasker can cut the plaster coving to size then stick them onto the scored areas with coving adhesive. Your coving fitter can do a test-fit to make sure the coving pieces and joints fit perfectly. Once each coving piece has been trimmed to fit, they can apply adhesive and stick on each coving piece. Your Tasker can apply adhesive into any gaps, then scrape and wipe off any excess adhesive.

Finishing touches & repairs

Depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations, your Tasker may hammer nails under each coving piece for additional support, then remove the nails and fill the holes after the adhesive has dried. Your Tasker can sand the edges of each coving piece, so these are smooth and flush with the walls and ceilings.

If your coving gets cracked or damaged in the future, you can hire the same Taskers to do coving repair or cornice repair. You can have the plaster coving finished in any colour you want afterwards.
