Top Draught Proofing related questions

One easy way to find a draught is to wet the back of your hand and pass it over the area where you suspect a draught may be. A draught would have a noticeable temperature change. If you’re not sure where the draught is coming from or if you want to be thorough, you can get a professional to inspect your home. Your draught-proofing expert may use a smoke pencil or match to check your home for draughts.

You may find draughts in areas with accidental gaps leading to the outside of your home. These areas include windows, doors, and also keyholes and letterboxes. Draughts may also pass through loft hatches, suspended floorboards, ceiling-to-wall joints, pipework, and electrical fittings on walls and ceilings. Your Tasker may inspect any of these areas for possible draughts.

Draught proofing materials include rubber blades, brushes, foams, sealants, and plastic strips. Your Tasker may seal the gaps with such materials using adhesive strips or tiny screws. A draught-proofing specialist can recommend the best material to use, depending on your situation.

DIY draught-proofing is an achievable task. But a more complex installation may call for expert help. A professional in draught-proofing can identify draughts fast and save you time and energy. They’ll also know the most effective material to use for your draught-proofing.

You could save around 10% off your energy bill from draught-proofing your windows and doors. Additionally, air leaks can cost you up to 20% of valuable heating in your home; draught-proofing can prevent this loss. A draught-proof home is more comfortable at lower temperatures. As a result, you can turn down the thermostat and conserve energy. Draught proofing often pays for itself within a year and will reduce your energy costs for the years to come.

Not all areas can be blocked or sealed with draught-proofing. Avoid blocking or sealing intentional ventilation. Some areas need air circulation to keep your house fresh and dry. Places like the kitchen and bathroom windows should have enough ventilation. Also, avoid blocking under-floor grilles, wall vents, and air vents for fires and heating appliances. For utmost safety, consult your draught-proofing expert or registered gas installer before your draught-proofing installation.

What do draught-proofing services include?

Draught proofing services include finding and sealing gaps where draughts may be coming through. This solution keeps the cold air out of your home to keep it warm, comfortable, and energy-efficient.

Find Taskers who can draught-proof your windows, doors and other areas in your home with accidental gaps. Here’s an overview of draught-proofing services you can book on Airtasker:

Draught proofing windows

Draughts are common around window frames, window sills, and gaps around locks and hatches. For windows that open, a specialist may use draught-proofing strips to fill the gap between the frame and the window. Other draught-proofing materials include self-adhesive foam, plastic strips, and metal.

For windows that don’t open, a specialist may use a silicone-based sealant to fix the draughts—looking to replace your entire old window or a chipped window pane? Taskers can also help with your window installation and repair needs.

Draught proofing doors

Air can leak through external and internal doors, especially in poorly fitted doors. A specialist can draught-proof a front door or garage door by sealing gaps at the bottom and edges. They can also fill cracks in keyholes and letterboxes with the right size of material.

Draughts can also occur in internal doors that lead to a room you don’t usually heat. Cold air from the kitchen or spare room can move into other rooms in your house or flat. Your Tasker may draught-proof your internal doors, sliding doors, and even your cat flaps.

If you need to install a new door or repair your sliding door, we can connect you with door fitters and repair specialists near you. You can also hire a heating & cooling expert to inspect and treat your heating or air conditioning system.

Draught proofing floorboards and skirting boards

Draught proofing floorboards and skirting boards may involve squirting filler into the cracks. A specialist may block gaps using silicone-based fillers, decorator’s caulk, or mastic-type products. Careful application is essential, as fillers can block holes permanently.

Hire a skilled specialist to make sure to apply fillers correctly and wipe off any excess filler before it dries. If necessary, you can also hire a Tasker to insulate gaps between your floor and skirting board.

Draught proofing walls

A draught-proofing specialist may fill in cracks in walls with hard-setting fillers or cement. They can also draught-proof around ceiling-to-wall joints and electrical fittings in walls and ceilings. Large cracks in your wall may be a sign of other structural issues. In which case, a surveyor can assess your home for any structural problems.

Draught proofing loft hatches

Your home may be losing hot air from draughts around your loft hatch. Hot air rises and gets lost in the cold space in your loft. A specialist can insulate your loft, attic, or roof space using strip insulation or other appropriate materials. While insulating your attic, you may take this opportunity to hire a cleaner to vacuum or mop down your attic as well.

Draught proofing my flat (4 windows)

£50

Shoreditch, Greater London, EC2A

25th Sep 2020

Hello, I’m looking for someone to draught-proof four windows (2 regular sized, 2 big enough to walk right through). I have provided one photo of two out of the four windows for scale. I have also tried my best to capture the damage. I don’t know the technical terms, but to my eye, it looks like the rubber tubing/rubber storm guard that runs around the perimeter of the windows have worn away or warped. I believe the windows themselves fit into their frames just fine. I’m not sure that this diagnosis is entirely correct. I need a professional to come and assess and fix the problem. If possible, I’d like a free quote first, which would include labour, cost of materials, transport etc. I am just outside congestion zone and have a free parking spot in the basement of my building. Thank you in advance for your time Stephanie
