PCB design Smart Chessboard PCB Functional Description The Smart Chessboard PCB is a 320×320 mm interactive board divided into 64 (8×8) squares, each 40 mm. It detects and identifies chess pieces, tracks movements, and provides visual LED feedback for players or an AI opponent. Each square contains a 13.56 MHz PCB coil antenna, a Hall sensor, and a WS2812B RGB LED centered inside the coil. The coil energizes and reads RFID tags embedded in the bases of chess pieces, while the Hall sensor detects magnetic presence to determine when a piece is lifted or placed. When movement is detected, the system reads the RFID tag to identify the specific piece. The board uses two 8:1 analog RF multiplexers (TMUX1208 / ADG708) to select one of the 64 coils for the PN5180 RFID reader, minimizing wiring and allowing fast scanning. Only one coil is active at a time to reduce interference. The ESP32 (FireBeetle) microcontroller handles all logic—controlling the multiplexers, reading Hall sensor data, and driving the RGB LED chain for visual feedback. LEDs can highlight legal moves, show computer moves, or indicate system status. Power is provided by a shared 5 V rail from the ESP32 board, with onboard 3.3 V regulation for logic devices. Two 40-pin 0.5 mm FFC connectors carry coil signals, returns, and shields between the main antenna PCB and a small RF switch daughterboard. This design enables a fully digital chessboard that recognizes piece identities, tracks moves in real time, and interfaces with AI or online play systems for an immersive, automated chess experience.
