Top Design related questions

What does a freelance designer do?

Freelance designers create visual designs from briefs using software or (in some cases) pen and paper. Most people choose to hire a designer who specialises in a specific type of design or platform, like digital, print, or animation.

What are the most popular design services?

The most popular design services include logo design, print design, business card design, flyer design, and source file editing.

Do freelance designers need to hold any qualifications?

No - there are no requirements for freelance designers to hold qualifications or certifications. However, many designers have studied at TAFE or university, with a Diploma or Bachelor Degree in architecture, communications, IT, or visual art.

Why should I hire a designer in Australia to help with my task?

You’ll find it easier to collaborate and communicate with a local designer in Australia. Not only this - they’re familiar with local culture (important for visual communication and branding) and standard file outputs and sizes (important for 3D design and print design).

What format will my designer deliver my final files in?

Your final file format will depend on the type of design you require and what platform it’s for. Print designs are commonly delivered as JPEG or PDF files, while digital designs may come as JPEG, PNG, or GIF files. If you think you’ll need to edit the file in future, make sure you also request the source file.

How much does it cost to hire a designer?

The cost of hiring a designer usually ranges from around $30-$110 for tasks completed through Airtasker. However, the exact price will depend on the type of design skills you need, the scope of your project, and the final deliverables.

What do freelance design services include?

Professional design usually starts with a brief. Then your designer will create mockups for approval, before producing the final design in the format you need. But the exact process will depend on the specific design service you need. Here are some of the most popular design services you can hire a designer for:

Branding & graphic design
A branding designer specialises in developing visual brand identities. This can include logo design and typography design. But it might extend to consulting on a range of graphic design tasks, as well as incorporating skills like drawing and illustration to create a truly unique look. Your branding designer will start by asking you a series of questions to dig deep into your goals and vision for the brand. They’ll talk about your audience, products, and services to find out what makes you unique and how that translates to a visual brand. They’ll help develop clear guidelines to help all future designs created to stay on brand and consistent with your style.

Print design
Need a specialist print designer? Whether you need brand new business cards designed, packaging design, brochures, flyers, or posters designed… or even an invitation for your event, a print designer can help. They’ll find out the specs needed by your printer, including file format and dimensions. You’ll need to brief them on your task, including examples of designs you like, a visual brand style guide for your business, and information on how the finished product will be used. Then they’ll put together your initial design (proposing a few options), before making changes based on your feedback. Finally, they’ll send through the finished design in the format your printer needs.

Digital design
Need designs for online? A digital designer may specialise in a range of online platforms and design styles, including landing page design, UI design, UX design, and even meme design to create content for your social media. Your designer will chat with you about your goals, audience, and brand. They’ll ask questions, like: what do you want to achieve from the project? Who is the audience for the project? What platform and specifications does the design need to fit? What are some examples of similar designs you like or projects you’ve done in the past? They’ll use software (like Adobe, Canva, or Balsamiq) to mock up your designs and present a first draft. After you (and/or your focus group) provide feedback, they’ll make changes and finalise the design so it’s ready to go live.

3D design & animation
Some designers specialise in animation design, which is a mix between graphic design and video editing. They create motion graphics for ads, explainer videos, and similar projects. Or you might need to hire a CAD designer who can do 3D modelling to bring your designs to life using software like Autocad or SketchUp. 3D rendering is used across a range of industries, including video game production, science, architecture, construction, and film production. Your designer may use pen and paper to roughly mockup the designs before producing them using their chosen software. You’ll get the chance to check over the design or animation and request changes before producing a final design, ready to use in your project or business.

We would like to print the attached powerpoint as a book and need to convert this to a print-ready file using adobe acrobat or indesign. The issue is that the powerpint isn’t A4 sized so we first need this be resized and then the appropriate crop and bleed marks added. See below advice we received from printers: · You need to make the whole page area 6mm bigger top and side. So if the job is A4 - 297 x 210mm then you need to make the page size 216 x 303mm. You really need to try and make the sure that the content (Text) is 10mm from the trim edge or 13mm from the overall page size. It obviously can be more. · In the attached PDF, the crops are fine but the colour or images need to bleed beyond the crops so that when they are cut down at the crop marks, the colour goes right up to the edge. · As I explained before the colour needs to go up to and beyond the trim marks so that you don't get any white border when it is trimmed down. Let me know if the above makes any sense or you think we need more info!

Looking for a chief toy maker for our tigers!

£500

Yaverland, Isle of Wight

7th Jun 2021

Who we are: We’re The Wildheart Trust, a wildlife charity that provides funding and support for tiger conservation programmes in India. In the UK, our Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, based on the Isle of Wight, provides forever homes for big cats and other exotic animals which have been rescued from circuses or the pet trade. In recent years we’ve rescued or re-homed six tigers, four lions and three Eurasian lynx and we’re working hard to make sure they have a good quality of life that’s as fun and rewarding as possible. And that’s where you come in! What we need done: We’re looking for someone to help us create and design toys for our tigers that stimulate their key senses and challenge them physically and mentally. These are no ordinary toys. Far from soft and fluffy, our tiger toys need to be robust and well-built so they can’t be destroyed in a matter of minutes. They should either be: Food toys - where we can insert a treat and our tigers have to work out how to get the food – tigers are very intelligent and love a problem-solving challenge! Behavioural enrichment - toys that stimulate our tigers’ natural wild instincts Ideally made of wood, old crates, fire hose, garage springs, heavy-duty hessian or bungee cord; these are hardcore, supersized versions of what you might see a domestic cat play with. We need someone with great DiY skills, carpentry experience and a knack for turning scrap and junk into something great. But don’t worry if you’re not so great on the tools - we’re also open to finding someone with ideas for what the toys could be, so let us know if you’ve got any awesome ideas! We’ll need you to come down to the Isle of Wight and take a brief, meet the keepers and then work with us on the prototype designs before bringing them to the Sanctuary and delivering them to the tigers to play with. We’re offering £500 to develop the designs and we also have a budget to pay for materials and travel, although we’re hoping that you may have old scraps lying around at home that you can turn into something amazing! Why we need it done: In the wild, tigers experience new sensations all the time so we introduce as many as we can and enrichment is a way of stimulating them. For example we know they are attracted by texture and they love lavender scent, so we need to create toys that keep their minds busy and appeal to their senses! So tell us why you’d be the best person for this job, and what skills or experience could make you our chief toymaker!?
