An air conditioner cools a space by removing heat from indoor air and releasing it outside, thereby lowering the room temperature. It does this using a closed refrigerant cycle that absorbs heat indoors and expels it outdoors. 

Warm air passes over the evaporator coil, where the refrigerant absorbs heat and turns into a gas. This gas is compressed and then sent to the condenser coil outside. The heat is released and the refrigerant returns to a liquid state, allowing the cycle to repeat. 

In the process, air conditioners also reduce humidity, as moisture condenses on the evaporator coil. A thermostat controls the system to maintain a set temperature.
