Top Car Servicing and MOT related questions

A newly bought car will need its first MOT after three years. After that, you are required to take the MOT once every year to renew.

It can help to get your car serviced ahead of an MOT. However, it's ideal to have an expert evaluate it based on areas prioritised by the MOT checklist. Servicing without considering these requirements can lead to costly and unnecessary repairs that won't really help you secure your MOT approval.

Car inspection, especially for the purpose of preparing for a carMOT near you, can be difficult when you’re not an expert. You can miss crucial aspects that can affect the status of your MOT. Plus, by hiring a Tasker to do the inspection, you can also readily have them make the necessary repairs in one go.

No, Taskers typically don’t need a licence to perform a car MOT check. However, they should have proven expertise and experience in implementing this type of inspections to ensure you’re getting what you pay for. They should be able to spot potential issues that go against the MOT standards and administer the necessary fixes if your vehicle is not yet up to par.

Yes, but it's a bit of a gamble. Without a proper car MOT check conducted by an expert, you risk your car failing the MOT due to minor issues that could have been resolved beforehand.

If you're unsure of your car MOT status, you can always review it online via www.gov.uk. You can easily check both your car tax and MOT by entering your vehicle's registration number.

What do Car MOT services include?

Booking a car MOT check through Airtasker helps you stay compliant with MOT standards for a smooth-sailing process on the day itself. Expect Taskers to run a thorough inspection covering all important aspects, both interior and exterior, to ensure your car is roadworthy for your own and others’ safety. This service will identify any potential issues that could lead to an MOT failure and correct them in advance, helping you avoid costly re-tests.

Here is what you can expect from a car MOT service near you:

Exterior checks

Taskers will begin with an inspection of your car's exterior, focusing on everything from the doors to the lights. They will ensure doors close and lock securely, and check that signal lights are fully functional and bright enough for visibility even at nighttime or under poor weather.

Tyres will also be checked for the correct tread depth and pressure. The mirrors and fuel cap will be checked to make sure there are no cracks or potential fuel leaks.

Under-the-bonnet checks

The next step is to lift the bonnet and check the operational components to see if it passes MOT standards. The engine, braking system, and steering and suspension systems will be examined for signs of wear, leakage, or loose components.

Taskers will make sure that emissions are within legal limits and that the exhaust system is intact with no damage or leaks. This step includes testing the catalytic converter to see if it functions properly. The car’s battery will be tested for voltage and charging, while wiring will be assessed for any worn or loose connections. The fuel system will also be examined for issues such as leaks or blocked fuel lines, and essential fluid levels like brake fluid, coolant, and windscreen washer fluid will be topped up as needed. If your fuel or air filters are clogged or worn, Taskers can readily replace these during the same car MOT check.

Cabin checks

Inside the vehicle, safety features are the most important aspect your Tasker will mind. Seat belts will be tested for proper retraction and locking to make sure they function correctly in the event of an accident. The front seats will be checked to see if they mount securely. The dashboard warning lights will also be inspected to make sure there are no deeper mechanical issues, such as airbag or ABS indicators staying lit even when unused.

The horn will also be tested to confirm that it is loud and clear enough for emergency situations. You can also expect testing of other interior components, like the windscreen wipers and demisters, since these are essential for clear visibility during poor weather. Testing these parts is crucial to guarantee your vehicle meets all safety standards before the car MOT check.

Fix my motorbike

£175

Market Harborough, Leicestershire

1st Jul 2025

I’ve been having trouble with my bike, at the start, my bikes battery had died so i replaced it with a new one on the 5th. i haven’t got my licence yet so i haven’t been riding it. i tried turning it on this morning and it sounded like a buzzing, similar to the dead battery noise, so i charged the battery and put it back in the bike. I then tried turning it on but it was making a sound but it still wouldn’t start. the fuel meter was flashing (even when i have fuel) i went to a shop and they suggested changing the spark plug so i’ve just done that. the flashing has stopped and i’ve got the 2 bars on show but it’s literally still not turning on. ive attached a video of the noise. i honestly have no idea what to do now, i don’t know if it’s the charger (12V 1 amp) or not. any help would be much appreciated!
