What does a mechanic service usually include?

Mechanics are skilled in nearly all aspects of keeping your car maintained, serviced, and repaired, so it’s roadworthy and efficient to run. The exact process during your service will depend on how your mechanic prefers to work and the type of tasks they’re doing, like:

Minor service

This is the most basic engine service a mechanic provides, but it can make a huge difference in whether or not your car can operate efficiently. A minor service usually alternates with a major service, at around the 6-month mark. A mechanic near you can do minor services because your mechanic only needs a flat service to get the job done. They’ll unscrew the sump plug, allowing old oil to drain from your car. Then they’ll remove the old oil filter and replace with a new one that’s the right size for your vehicle. Your mechanic will dispose of your old filter and oil. They’ll also inspect other key components, like your battery, lights, air filters, and other fluids.

Log book servicing / major service

A major service or log book service involves a series of steps in line with your vehicle manufacturer’s service manual. It’ll include a combination of major and minor services, depending on the age of your car, or how many kilometres it’s travelled. Your service may include testing your lights, brakes, and battery. Then checking fluid levels, windscreen wipers, windows, mirrors, steering, suspension, radiator, fan belts, and tyre pressure. Finally, it may also include maintaining/replacing oil filters, hoses, belts, tyres, and wheel alignment. Your mechanic will finish off by stamping your logbook to record the services completed, which can help maintain your car’s resale value.

Roadworthy certificate or pink slip

A roadworthy certificate or pink slip is a specific vehicle check that’s conducted to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition and can be operated safely. In some states, it’s required when selling a car or may be required each year to confirm your vehicle is safe for registration purposes. A mechanic will check off a list of predetermined items to verify that your car meets a minimum safety standard set out by your state government. They’ll focus on safety, checking things like tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, rust or damage, seatbelts, windows, lights, and your windscreen.

Major and minor repairs

Sometimes your car might need a little extra attention if you’ve had an accident, broken down, or your drive feels a bit different to normal. A car mechanic can perform minor and major repairs on most vehicles. They’ll use diagnostic equipment to locate the issue and decide on a course of action to get your car back on the road. If they don’t have the necessary spare parts, they may need to order them to finish off your repair and replace any faulty parts. Note that a mechanic service is usually limited to your car’s engine and electrics. It’s best to speak to a panel beater if you also have external body damage.

Oil filter Change Minor Fixes – VF Holden Evoke Sportswagon 2016

$200

Hamilton QLD 4007, Australia

2nd Oct 2025

The Problem VF Evoke SW 2016. Cold start = fine. After ~20min or >28°C, loses pwr esp up hills. Severe cough/splutter WOT (foot flat). Struggles to hold 50km/h on Gateway Bridge, drops to 30km/h on steeper inclines. Air filter OK. Likely Causes (According to Repco staff guess): intake manifold / plugs / coil leads / torque conv. If I run the problem through AI (ChatGPT) its Diagnosis – step by step OBD-II Scan – chk codes (misfire, trims, cat eff). Fuel System – hot fuel pressure test after 20–30min. If drop → repl pump module & strainer. Air & Sensors – inspect/clean MAF, chk vac leaks, purge valve. Ignition – repl plugs if worn, test coils (swap/live misfire). Exhaust – back-pressure test or pull O₂ sensor to confirm blocked cats. Repl cats if restr. Oil & Filter – full change w/ new filter. What I Need Exp. w/ Holden Commodore/Evoke or 3.0L V6. Tools: OBD-II, fuel press gauge, back-pressure tester. Supply/advise on parts (pump, plugs, coils, cats etc). Step-by-step diag + summary after each stage. Budget 💲: Fair labour + parts. Quote for diag first, then fix options. Flexible if parts cost ↑. I can pick up from Repco/SCA to save time/$. Timing 📅: Flexible, but urgent as car unsafe on hills. 👉 If this sounds like you, pls make offer!

BMW 525i (2006) Repairs – Misfires, O2 Sensor & VANOS Solenoid

$300

Brisbane QLD, Australia

16th Sep 2025

Hi there 👋 I’m looking for a reliable and affordable mechanic to help repair my 2006 BMW 525i (E60). I ran a diagnostic scan today and these are the issues that came up: • ✅ Replace spark plugs & coils (cylinders 1–3 misfiring) • ✅ Replace heated oxygen sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1 – Code P112C) • ✅ Clean or replace VANOS solenoids (Exhaust Camshaft – Code P0015) Fault codes: P112C, P0015, P0301, P0302, P0303. I’m chasing the cheapest overall fix strategy (plugs & coils first, then O2 sensor, then VANOS clean/replacement if needed). What I need from you: • Supply and install parts OR I can source the cheapest parts if you point me in the right direction. • Labor at a fair rate. • Someone experienced with BMWs preferred, but not essential if you’re confident. Budget & Timing: • Suggested budget: $300 – $600 (parts & labor depending on what’s needed). • Flexible with timing – can bring the car to you or you can work mobile if that’s easier. If you’re the right person, there’ll be plenty more ongoing work as I buy and flip cars regularly 🚗💨 Thanks! 🙏

Kangaroo Point QLD, Australia

11th May 2025

My engine oil cooling housing needs changing in my 2020 Holden Trax. The part has been bought from aus auto store, just need it to be replaced. I have my recent service that states it’s where the leak is from. Happy to have it changed at mine or if I need to take it to a shed/mechanic etc.

Benjamin has gone above and beyond to guide and help with my engine oil cooling housing unit. He thoroughly explained the steps he was performing on my car and had fantastic communication skills. Very trustworthy guy will be using again! Thanks Ben.
