What does landscaping include?
When you book your landscaper, it’s important to let them know in your task exactly what work you need to be done - from simple maintenance services to a complex landscape design for your outdoors. That way, they’ll be able to make you a fair offer and bring along the right tools for the job.
Not sure where to start? If you need a range of general landscaping services, grab a notepad and pen, then go for a wander outside. Make a note of anything that needs tidying up, trimming, or removing. Then make sure you include these tasks in your listing.
Another way to think about your landscaping is to break it down by the type of specialised skill or service you need, such as installing a water feature or irrigation system, designing garden beds, or planning the landscape of your pool area. Here are some of the jobs you might give to your landscaper and what you can expect to happen during the process.
Planning
When you’re undertaking a BIG change, it’s important to lay the groundwork with some planning first. A garden designer will help come up with ideas and map everything out on paper before you get started on your garden space makeover. Or you might hire a landscape architect to plan a larger commercial landscaping project in your local community or public outdoor space.
Earth and rocks
Don’t break your back over your backyard landscaping - no matter how little or how much you need to do. You can hire earthmoving contractors to do your trench digging, levelling, and even your pool excavation or boring excavation. They’ll bring the all tools and equipment needed to dig and move the earth so you (literally) don’t have to get your hands dirty.
Gardens
Planning a nice new garden bed to grow your own veggies, flower beds, shady trees, or just want to reduce the amount of ground you have to mow in your yard? Get some help with your garden landscaping and garden edging to get the project off your to-do list and done sooner. That way, you can get on with the fun bit in landscaping - planting!
Water
Where there are plants, there’s water. Make sure your plants get water when they need it (without having to remember to hose) with a drip irrigation system or a sprinkler system installation. Or make your garden more beautiful with a garden pond or water features. Either way, getting your water systems sorted is so much quicker and easier with an extra pair of hands or a landscaper near you who knows what they’re doing.
Trees
Trees are wonderful things, but sometimes, a tree’s gotta go. If you’re not experienced, you should never do chainsawing, stump grinding, wood chipping and mulching, or land clearing yourself. That’s something you should leave up to an experienced landscaper with the right equipment and background to get the job done properly and safely.
Building and installations
A big component of landscaping is installing things to make your space more functional and beautiful. Things like retaining walls, artificial grass installation, landscape lighting, or even garden benches to sit on. It’s always best to get a landscaper to help when it involves heavy lifting or specialist equipment. Garden landscapers can help you get your installations done safely and help you start enjoying your space much sooner.

14m3 of sand needs to be moved into the school Gaga pit from 3 piles just outside the pit. Unfortunately, the truck couldn't dump it in directly. Ideal for someone with a bobcat. With a bob cat this would probably take less than 2 hours, possibly even 1. The picture shows 1 pile of sand, but there will be 2 more delivered tomorrow. We'd love this to be done this week if possible.

Move 1.5 cubic metres of mulch from driveway & spread on nature strip
$200
Point Lonsdale VIC, Australia
2nd Jun 2026
We are planting a new native garden bed on our nature strip. There will be approx 1.5 cubic metres of leaf mulch delivered on the afternoon of Tuesday 9 June. The mulch needs to be spread around the new plants which are on approx 40 square metres of nature strip area (13m x 3m). There should be mulch applied evenly from the front fence line to approx 3 metres from the fence line. There will be 20-30 new plants in the ground (very small tubestock plants) and it is important that there is a mulch free area that is 5cm in diameter around each plant. At the end of the job, the driveway needs to be fully swept and cleaned so there is no mulch left on the driveway. The tools needed are a wheelbarrow, one shovel per person and a large outdoor broom. These will not be provided. Although the timing is listed as flexible, it needs to be done on either Wednesday 10 June or Thursday 11 June (Wednesday preferred). Ideally you have a lot of experience in gardening or landscaping work. Type of gardening: Other Size of garden: Under 50m² Has green waste bin: No
