They can keep you motivated to do your workouts and eventually achieve your fitness goals, especially when you’re not feeling enthusiastic about working out. Not everyone can stay motivated all the time, and sometimes you need to feed off the energy of another person to work out - and this is when a gym buddy can be most helpful. They can also help you avoid wasting money by helping you maximise your long-term gym membership.

How else is working out with a partner more beneficial?

Working out with a partner, especially one who is more fit than you, can motivate you to work harder. One psychology expert has a theory that says people tend to compare themselves to others, which can open the door to self-evaluation and self-improvement. Is it better to work out longer or harder?

It’s better to work out harder than prolong your workout sessions. More intense workouts can “shock” your muscles and make them larger in shorter sessions and in a shorter amount of time. At least one fitness icon used this principle to gain mass throughout his weightlifting career. If you feel you’ve hit a plateau, work to increase the intensity of your workouts; don’t resort to extending your workout sessions to maximise muscle gains.  

Why is it important to ‘spot’ someone when lifting?

Spotting someone is vital, especially when a person is stretching their ability to lift a weight to its limits. They need someone to monitor their performance and be ready to help them safely return the weights to their rack when they do reps to the point of failure. Spotters can boost a lifter with their presence alone or encourage them as they near the end of their reps and strain against their limits.   

What is the best time in a day to work out?

That depends on your workout goals. If you want to burn more fat and lose weight quicker, working out in the morning before breakfast is ideal. As you haven’t eaten before working out in the morning, your body will burn fat as fuel. If you want to build muscle, anytime between 1 to 4 p.m. is good, as you’ve had a couple of meals by then to fuel your workout and support muscle growth.
