What does a bathroom renovation include?

Experienced handymen, plumbers, and builders can help with small cosmetic changes to your bathroom. They’ll replace showerheads, taps, fit a shower screen door, or even plumb your toilet. But if you’re looking for a complete bathroom overhaul, you need a bathroom renovation specialist. Here’s what you can expect when working with bathroom renovation contractors and tradies:

Step 1. Quote and planning

Your bathroom renovator will normally need to visit your property to create an accurate quote. They’ll base their costings on the size of your bathroom, how long the project will take (usually 13-25 days for a whole bathroom renovation), and materials needed. You’re responsible for choosing and ordering any new fixtures and fittings - bath, toilet, units, tiles, etc. These should be paid for and delivered before the building start date. Your contractor will sent through the quote and draw up a blueprint for all tradespeople to work from, to ensure the project is kept on track.

Step 2. Demolishing your old bathroom

Builders and demolition professionals will strip out your old bathroom and knock through any walls. They’ll remove fixtures and either bin them, put them into storage, or cover them up so they’re protected during building work.

Step 3. Prep for new bathroom

Next, your plumber and electrician will carry out a rough-in fit. This means putting plumbing and electrical wiring in place without connecting it. Next, your carpenter, plasterer, and tiler will build or prepare your walls and floor for decorating. This can take 2-5 days depending on the size of your bathroom and drying time needed for plastering, rendering, and your undercoat of paint.

Step 4. Adding your new fixtures

Here you’ll really see your new bathroom come to life. First, your tiler will lay tiles and your painter will paint the walls. Once these are dry, your new bathroom furniture can be moved in. Your plumber and electrician now complete any connections. Your contractors will apply waterproofing and sealant around sinks, showers, and bathtubs. Finally, glass fixtures, like mirrors or shower doors, are installed.

Step 5. Final inspection and clean

With everything installed and dry, your bathroom renovator will carry out a final inspection. They’ll clear away and dispose of any bits leftover by the tradies. Your contractor might complete a basic clean, but you might also want to book a renovation cleaning service so your new bathroom is absolutely spick and span.

Plumber to plan & quote bathroom reno

Erskineville, NSW, Australia

Renovating a mid sized bathroom in 2 bed unit. Looking to fix the cramped layout without moving services. Move bath under window (will be freestanding rather than built in). Move vanity to where bath currently is. Two other identical units in the building have done the same. I am looking for : 1. Honest appraisal of what’s involved to achieve the outcome - no surprises! 2. Plan for new bathroom - dimensions, location of services (just a sketch so I can understand what goes where and where the services would connect). I have a plan of the existing bathroom. 3. List of items I need to buy including fixture type and dimensions (eg. width of new vanity? Wall backed toilet?) 4. Quote if you’re interested in doing the work. Ideally you’d be able to do this tomorrow, estimate the job will take up to 1 hour. Have included photos of : 1. Existing bathroom 2. Laundry (behind bathroom wall) 3. Renovated bathroom in other unit

I asked Robert for a consultation to help plan a complete bathroom renovation. He was outstanding - very helpful, knowledgeable, and thorough. Friendly and on time, enjoyed working with him, hope to do so again.

Design our bathroom renovation

$100

Surry Hills NSW, Australia

25th Aug 2020

We are in the process of buying a house, settlement is at the start of October. We want to redesign the bathroom. It current has a shower, vanity and bathtub. We want to add a toilet to the room. The task is to design the bathroom, and write up a detailed request for quote for the plumbers (preferably to a point where the plumber do not need to inspect before providing the quote and we don't get surprises later). We can organise access to the property in Chippendale. In the plan, we would prefer to keep the bathtub where it is. The other features can be moved, however we would like to minimise the costs of the renovation. We think as a starting point putting the toilet in the existing bathroom space may be a good idea (has a fan and is on the end of the bathroom).

The task was to design the bathroom, and write up a detailed request for quote for the plumbers (preferably to a point where the plumber do not need to inspect before providing the quote and we don't get surprises later). This task wasn't really done. Instead we received a very vague quote. It is of no use to send to plumbers to request quotes, see below. "Bathroom renovation Demolition of all floor and wall tiles Removal of all existing pc items Install of all hot and cold services Installation of brand new drainage for toilet All plumbing services All tiling services All waterproofing services included Electrical services included Installation of all brand new items Exclusions : all tiles and pc items to be supplied by you Skip bin to be supplied by you" In the end we paid $100 for a quote that we could have gotten for free by calling a plumber. Adam seemed fine, but the work didn't reflect the task we asked for.
