Top Trench Digging related questions
It heavily depends on the depth of the trench and the kind of tools to be used. A hundred feet of the trench can take about 12 hours to be dug using the proper equipment like an excavator. Doing that by hand can naturally take much longer. The type of soil also affects the time it could take to dig a trench. Sandy soils can be relatively easier to dig, while clay can be difficult.
No, Taskers usually come with professional equipment to help them finish the job quickly and efficiently. They have excavators, trenching shovels, and trenchers with them when they come to do the service. If, by any chance, you have these tools on hand and you prefer to use them, feel free to tell your Tasker beforehand.
Yes, but this means that you need to spend time and energy doing the job yourself. It can also lead to severe issues if done incorrectly. Having a professional dig your trench saves you time and avoids having mistakes. Digging deeper trenches can also be dangerous and require extensive experience. Your Tasker’s expertise can get this challenging job done safely and cost-effectively.
It depends on where you live. In some states like California, you’re required to get permission from the utilities and 811 before using a tool to move the ground, while in others, shallow holes can be dug without permission. But generally, in the US, if you’re planning to dig a hole as deep as five feet or more, you need to secure approval first. It’s best to approach your local authorities before digging a trench to ensure you’re following protocols.Â

What do trench digging services include?
Trenching services involve digging a large hole, usually using a trenching shovel and a trencher to help successfully lay underground wires, pipes, or structural supports. It’s also traditionally done to install or repair public drains, sewer lines, and underground utilities to serve populated areas. Trenching also has plenty of benefits if you’re taking care of your lawn! Whatever you need, Taskers can make your home improvement project possible. Here are the most common things you can expect from trenching services near you:
Straight trenches
If you live in an area with a limited surface to disturb, such as near buildings or roadways, digging straight trenches is the right choice for you. It’s a kind of trench where the sides are parallel, and the base is at a right angle. Having trench boxes or shoring is usually required as protective systems. A six-inch straight trench can also be helpful if you’re trying to control pests in your property, where you can apply a non-repellent pesticide into the soil to achieve a treatment zone.
Sloped trenches   Â
Sloped trenches have angled sides to prevent cave-ins. Its angle is determined by trench depth, soil type, and the amount of time the trench will remain open. If you’re planning to install large pipes or culverts, this can be the right kind of trench for you. It’s also common to have sloped trenches in new construction sites with a wider path of soil.
Benched trenches
To ensure that your trench or excavation site is entirely safe, you can try benching! Benched trenches are those with sides that have been cut away to create steps. The height of these steps, otherwise known as vertical distances, is determined by the soil type. The less stable your soil is, the shallower your angles should be. It’s best to bench it if your trench needs to be up to 20 feet deep. This is to help stabilize your trench and to make it more secure. For protective systems, shielding or trench boxes are usually used.
Bell-bottom pier hole trenches
For those planning to build a certain structure, make sure to have someone dig a bell-bottom pier hole trench! The base or bottom of the trench is usually wider than the top, giving it a bell-shaped cross-section. This is typically used to install footings to support the foundation of a structure. Since these kinds of trenches have sides sloping inward over the floor of the excavation, more protective systems are usually required to keep them from collapsing.Â

Extend a front yard trench in heavy clay soil for planting ASAP
$200
Rockbank VIC, Australia
15th Apr 2025
I have dug a trench by hand with tools (mattock/crowbar/shover) and am over it, very hard ground/clay. I would like the trench extended and deepened slightly. See attached pictures. Happy to also negotiate soil and green waste removal which is currently on my nature strip to make it a quote worth giving. Ideally I would like the trench complete ASAP so that I can plant what I like over Easter and ANZAC day long weekends. I'm sorry but this is only my 2nd time using Airtasker, please let me know if there are any questions. I've listed the job price from just googling trenching services etc, could be a quick job if you have machinery or are strong/good at digging. I'm a bit worried about pipes but have a drainage plan (doesn't appear to be pipes but I'm bad at reading plans) and don't need to go super deep. (25cm or so) Thank you for viewing my ad. Drainage Trench Dug
$200
Kedron QLD, Australia
15th Mar 2025
Hi all, I've recently had knee surgery and need someone to dig a drainage channel for me. Most measurements are in the pictures. It will need to be dug by hand, I can supply good quality trenching shovel, mattock plus cold water/softdrinks. You are digging in a garden bed so the dirt can be dumped immediately out of the trench. There are some plant roots and tree roots, but nothing crazy and nothing precious. It needs to be 450mm deep from the top of the brick wall, so you're only looking at 250 - 300mm of dirt needs removing. Doesn't have to be perfect, but deeper/wider is better than not deep enough etc. Drawings and photos attached. Dog not included (wife won't let me).

Help me get Cyclone Alf ready! Gutters, green waste, digging trench?
$250
Annerley QLD, Australia
4th Mar 2025
I’m just a gal living in a dinkie little granny flat, completely unsure how to navigate Alfie once he hits 😩. The gutters I THINK might be too hard to clean, but have included a photo just in case. Having experienced storms in this backyard, I notice that the drainage gets overwhelmed quite quickly and the water tends to pool back there. It has creeped slightly up to my door, so I am a bit concerned what old Alfie might do. Thankfully, I live on a hill, so I feel like there must be some way to redirect the flow of water so it goes down the stairs (have included photos!) I’m hoping I can get someone smarter than me to take a look and put some measures in place? Thank you!!!!! Type of gardening: Other Size of garden: 50m²-100m² Has green waste bin: No

Dig out (and remove) 4.5m trench of bamboo roots
$250
Malvern East VIC, Australia
28th Oct 2024
Need help with removing the remaining 4.5meters of an 8metre trench (300mm wide) of three large clumps of bamboo roots. This will need to be done by hand as access is limited & only via our house (no external access), and we need the roots & debris removed; again this will need to be manually via tarps/bins by hand as access is via our house, so wheelbarrows aren’t an option. Equally, access to our unit front door is via a long driveway, with limited access for anything larger than a Ute. Happy to answer questions to help with bids!

We gave Faimata had a really tough task digging bamboo out, and he did an awesome job - prompt, great communicator & left the site super clean. Will totally use him again!!
