This can take as little as a few hours to at most a couple of weeks. The time it will take can depend on the severity of the damage and the complexity of the repairs. In some cases, temperature and humidity are also factors as these can affect how fast each layer of filler, adhesive or new plaster dries. You can ask your Tasker for an estimate of how long it may take to do these repairs.
Only if you have a good reason to do so, such as if it’s coming off in large pieces, it’s not advisable to remove old plaster. Old plaster in your home is often of a higher quality than most other materials (like drywall), and you can lose its soundproofing and mould-inhibiting benefits. This is also laborious and time-consuming, and therefore costly, so you may want to hire an expert to repair and restore your plaster instead.
It sure can! Old plaster that’s restored can increase your home’s historical authenticity. If yours is a Victorian-era home, don’t remove any of the plaster - this is very sturdy, buyers expect it to have it, and you may get a higher appraisal than other homes on the market. Should you build a new home, try using as much plaster as possible to make it more durable, require less maintenance and make your home more valuable.
Efflorescence is the appearance of white crystalline material after the plaster has dried. This is caused by soluble salts present within the wall or ceiling or present in the water, lime, sand or other material used to make the plaster. This can be unsightly and make it difficult (if not impossible) for any paint to stick to the surface. You can remedy this by washing and dry-brushing the surface until no more crystalline material appears.
Yes, absolutely. Just remember that you can’t paint plaster that has only recently been repaired and dried right away. New plaster can be dry to the touch after about 1 to 2 days, but it may not be completely dry deep down! As plaster absorbs moisture, it can make a fresh coat of paint peel off after it’s dry. To be sure, let the plaster dry for about 4 to 6 weeks, then apply and smooth the primer or paint.
Most cracks on plaster are due to age. Over the years, plaster can separate from its lath and show up as cracks on the surface - this is cosmetic damage and can be fixed. But if plaster cracks are diagonal or jagged and measure more than 6 millimetres in width, this can be a sign of a more severe problem. These can be signs of a shifted foundation or deteriorated or collapsed wood beams due to termites; you may hire pest control to inspect.

What do plaster repair services include?
Plaster repair services include all the activities necessary to fix damaged plaster on your walls or ceilings. This service can consist of fixing all sorts of damage like holes, gouges, pits or hairline cracks in plaster. Your plaster repair Tasker can inspect the site, assess the damage, prepare the necessary tools and materials, fix the damage, and apply the appropriate finish.
Site assessment
Your plaster repair Tasker does a thorough inspection of the walls and ceilings that need repairs. They can assess the extent and nature of the damage and see if it’s as simple as plaster crack repair or is a more complex job like blown plaster repair or lath and plaster repair. Your Tasker can take the appropriate measurements of the damage, such as the depth and size of cracks, to determine how much material they need and what tools to prepare.
If during the inspection, your Tasker discovers water damage to your plaster, you may want to hire someone to check and fix the pipes before they start.
Site & materials preparation
Your Tasker may cover your floor with a plastic dust sheet or other protective material. Some Taskers may move furniture out of the way. They may also cover any light switches or electrical sockets that are close to the damaged plaster. Should you want new wirings installed, make sure to hire someone to do this first before the plaster repairs.
If necessary, your Tasker may prime the damaged areas - this can include scraping the edges of cracks, then dusting off raised and excess material, then brushing the area with carpenter’s glue to give better surface adhesion for the filler and new plaster. Your Tasker can do this and other appropriate prep work on the damage.
Performing repairs
Once the site is prepared, and the materials are ready, your Tasker can do the repairs. They can use proven techniques and the right tools and materials. This can include plaster repair with a skim application, plaster repair with Polycell, plaster repair with Polyfilla, gypsum plaster repair and any other appropriate repair methods.
Some Taskers can remove and replace broken laths, although you may have to hire a separate service if the damage to the lath is extensive. Following best practices, your Tasker can apply as much filler and new plaster as needed to fill the cracks, gouges or holes in the wall or ceiling plaster. Note that they can allow each layer of filler or plaster to dry in-between applications.
Finishing touches
Your Tasker can smoothen the new plaster once all the layers have dried. They can use sandpaper of the appropriate coarseness or fineness to make the new plaster level with the rest of the wall or ceiling. If necessary, your Tasker can apply finishing oils or primer for fresh paint.
Speaking of which, why not have your walls or ceilings painted in a new or different colour?

Plaster Repair (6 Holes Total) OR Professional Mirror Mounting

Tallawong NSW, Australia

have two separate jobs that need doing. I am happy to hire one person for both, or two different specialists. If you are only quoting for one of the tasks, please clearly state which one in your offer. TASK 1: Plaster Repair & Paint (6 Holes Total) I need several holes repaired and made invisible (refer to photos): • 1x Large Hole: Approx 280mm x 200mm (Impact damage). • 1x Medium Hole: Approx 50mm x 25mm. • 4x Small Holes: These are from previous failed mounting attempts. • Process: Patch, base coat, top coat, sand to a smooth flush finish, and paint. • Materials: I have the paint. You must bring all plastering supplies, mesh/patches, and sanding equipment. TASK 2: Professional Mirror Mounting (2 Mirrors) • The Mirrors: Two Koala Living Buchannan Mirrors (12kg each). • The Challenge: These mirrors use a keyhole system. One of the holes needing repair was caused by a failed amateur attempt at hanging these. I need a professional who can ensure they are anchored safely and perfectly level this time. • Requirements: You must be able to locate studs or use high-quality heavy-duty anchors (e.g., Toggles or WallDogs). • Materials: Please provide your own professional-grade wall anchors and spirit level. Important Notes for Taskers: 1. Partial Quotes: If you are only quoting for the Plastering OR the Mounting, please specify which one in your comment. 2. Mounting Expertise: Because the wall has already been damaged by a failed installation, please confirm what anchors you will use to ensure the mirrors are 100% secure. 3. Cleanliness: Please ensure all plaster dust is vacuumed/cleaned up afterward.

Plaster Repair Needed – Fix & Square Up Internal Corner
$250
Blind Bight VIC, Australia
2nd Mar 2026
Plasterer Needed – Fix & Square Up Internal Corner (Must Be Perfectly Square) I need a plasterer to set up and sheet this internal corner properly and plaster/finish it ready for paint. I’ve already ripped the old plaster off because the corner wasn’t square and it was noticeable against the flooring – it was doing my head in. I want this done properly so the corner is perfectly square and straight, and doesn’t show up visually against the floor line. Important: • The corner must be properly squared and plumb. • You’ll likely need to adjust/pack the frame slightly to get it right – please be upfront and prepared for that. • Architraves can be removed if needed to do the job properly. • I have plaster sheets here you can use. This is not just a quick patch job – I want it set up correctly so it looks sharp and clean. There are also a few other small plastering jobs you can look at while you’re here if interested. Located in Blind Bight Please only respond if you’re confident you can get the corner dead square and finish it properly.
Wei did an excellent job with the plastering. Great communication, very professional, and the workmanship was exceptional. He was also extremely tidy and left everything spotless after finishing. Highly recommend Wei and would happily use him again.
