Top Lime Plastering related questions

This is an age-old material that has been used since 7500 BC. It remains one of the most durable materials, especially for exterior walls. Lime plastering lasts longer, stands up to the elements, and stabilises humidity in spaces by absorbing and releasing moisture.

It doesn’t create much surface condensation, so this also prevents mould growth. Apart from these benefits, lime plastering is eco-friendly and can make for a beautiful, lasting finish for your walls and ceilings.

Yes, but only if you have the right tools, skills and experience. Lime plastering is a nearly-lost trade due to its time-consuming and laborious nature, so it’s not recommended to do lime plastering yourself unless you have expert instruction or assistance. To do lime plastering well, you’d best take a course and take an apprenticeship. But if you simply can’t wait to have lime plastering done in your home, why not hire a Tasker instead?

This can vary depending on the number and size of the walls or ceilings to be plastered. On average, it takes 3 to 5 days to allow a layer of lime plastering to dry before applying another layer. The standard practice is to apply 2 to 3 layers. It can take up to 18 days to complete lime plastering on a wall or ceiling. You can ask your Tasker for a better idea of how long it can take.

Tradespeople that specialise in lime plastering can be slightly difficult to come by, and it’s due to the rise of quicker-setting alternatives like gypsum plaster. As lime plastering is also more labour-intensive, homeowners may not look upon it favourably. However, its particular application is a small price to pay as lime plastering is eco-friendly, non-toxic, highly durable, can add aesthetic appeal, and in some cases, add more value to your home.

Yes, in some ways, plaster can be better than drywall. Plaster is more durable and can last for many years if the plaster is adequately maintained. Lime and other types of plaster do not allow mould to grow on them, and plaster offers better soundproofing and fireproofing than even high-grade drywall. Although lime plastering takes more time and labour to install, these benefits, along with its aesthetic appeal, can outweigh these disadvantages.

Not in every case. If the lath and plaster in your home aren’t falling off in clumps, then you can leave it as is. But if the plaster is cracked and the underlying lath is damaged, consider having these repaired and not replaced. You can consult your architect or builder about what you can do with existing lath and plaster if you plan to renovate or remodel your home.

What do lime plastering services include?

Lime plastering services include all the necessary tasks and activities to apply lime plaster to your home’s exterior walls, interior walls or ceilings. Your Tasker can do the required tasks, including inspecting the site and doing the necessary preparations. They can mix and apply the lime plastering, then protect the plaster as it dries naturally.

Inspecting & preparing the site

Your Tasker can take all the appropriate measurements to determine how much material for the lath and plaster is needed for complete coverage. Your hired lime plasterer can note where any electrical sockets, light switches and light fixtures are on the walls or ceiling.

Be sure to turn off the power before your Tasker starts to lime plaster walls and ceilings. If you want to reposition any electrical outlets or lighting fixtures, you can hire someone to move the electricals in the space beforehand.

Installing a lath

Upon request, some Taskers can install a lath onto the wall or ceiling to anchor the lime plaster. If the lath is for more than one wall or must cover a large area, you may want to hire a separate service for this. Some Taskers can install wood, metal, plastic or reed lath depending on what’s appropriate for your home and what suits your needs and budget.

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, best practices and relevant safety regulations, they can cut the lath into strips or sheets, then secure the lath onto the wall or ceiling with screws or other fasteners.

Mixing the lime plaster

Ensure your home has ample water pressure so your Tasker can mix sand, lime putty and water in exact proportions to make the natural lime plaster. They can mix the lime plaster to the right consistency, so the lime render and succeeding layers can be applied in the right amounts and not harden prematurely.

Applying the lime plaster

Once the lime plaster is ready, your Tasker can proceed to tack on the plaster to your walls or ceilings. They can make sure that the lime plaster is applied evenly and consistently and in the appropriate thickness. Your Tasker can use the lime plaster standard thickness of 2 to 5 millimetres and apply 2 to 3 layers.

Finishing & drying

In between layers, your Tasker can check for raised spots or areas lacking in material. They can do the appropriate fixes, such as apply more material or smooth out the lime plaster. Your Tasker can let each layer air-dry after application, and they may set up a tarp to block the sun and avoid uneven drying.

They can repeat the application and drying process until your walls or ceilings are completely covered with 2 to 3 layers of lime plaster. After your lime plastering dries, why not hire an expert to paint them?

I’d like the texture to be “bagged” or “half rendered” similar to white wall pics. Please do not bid if you have no experience with Lime plaster/ lime render. I am using it as it is a more natural product and intend to tint it to a light bone colour. The carpet is getting removed afterwards so the mess is not a huge issue.
